5 Reasons To Be Wary Of The Son Of God Movie

March 20, 2014 By Beginning and End

Son Of God Film Heresy | False New Age Teachings and not accurate

“For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.” -2 Corinthians 11:4.

In February 2014, ‘Son of God’ a spinoff feature-length film, of the wildly successful “Bible Miniseries”, will debut in movie theaters across America. The film, which is essentially expanded scenes from The Bible Miniseries. Created by TV producer Mark Burnett and actress Roma Downey, the movie has the potential to just be a continuation of the inaccurate and heretical doctrines of its original miniseries. And despite the many doctrinal red flags in The Bible Miniseries, Pastors across the country are once again urging their congregations to flock to see Hollywood’s distorted version of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Trailer

Here is the trailer for the film:

1. The Bible Mini-Series: The Foundation of Its Heresy

Beginning and End initially did an article on The Bible Miniseries, entitled “The Bible Miniseries: Hollywood Heresy” in which we exposed the many heretical doctrines and outright blasphemies in the smash hit cable series. Rather than just mere “creative license”, The Bible Miniseries distorted and changed key events and accounts in the Biblical text for the sake of “entertainment.” Among some of the examples:

History Channel The Bible | Blasphmey and heresy with Biblical errors.

In the real Bible, the angels sent to Sodom never got beat up.

  • The angels who arrive in Sodom to warn Lot of the coming judgment of God are beaten up by the residents of the city of Sodom. They run into Lot’s house in fear of the people. None of this is in Scripture and in angels, not only do humans never harm angels, they are more often than not in utter fear and despair when standing in the presence of a Holy Angel. Later in The Bible Miniseries, the angels use martial arts to fight the Sodomites as Lots and his family escape. Again, none of this is ever in Scripture and is a bizarre depiction of a very important account of God’s righteous judgment against sin (destroying the sinful city of Sodom) and His loving redemption (saving Lot and his family).

Son of God heresy and false teaching | Wolves in Sheep clothing

Despite its many errors, the producers of Son of God are selling sermons, Bible Study guides and numerous resources for churches all over the world.

  • King David upon being caught in the sin of adultery and murder by the prophet Nathan, is told that his son born of adultery will die as punishment. This indeed is what the Bible depicts. However in the Miniseries, David’s reaction at being told God’s judgment is anger and defiance, as he tells Nathan “we’ll see about that”, implying that he’s going to fix God’s business for daring to pronounce such a judgment on him. In Scripture, the real King David’s reaction is deep sorrow and repentance:

And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord. And Nathan said unto David, The Lord also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die. Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.And Nathan departed unto his house. And the Lord struck the child that Uriah’s wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth. And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.

And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead? But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead. Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the Lord, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat. Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread. And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether God will be gracious to me, that the child may live? But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me. – 2 Samuel 12:13-23.

There are many powerful Biblical principles in this account. For one, we see that the real King David did indeed repent and immediately confess his sin. His humility before God was clear because despite being a powerful king surrounded by servants and owning an abundance of wealth, David fasted for days, laying on his face on the ground in repentance, praying for God’s mercy on his illegitimate child. Thus we see David’s heart was indeed one of a believer in God’s salvation and forgiveness. David even expressed to his servants that he believed it was possible God would revoke his judgment and let the child live. Finally in verse 23, David, despite his horrific sin, knows that he is going to Heaven as he declares that his child will not be coming back to life, but that he would “go to him” – at David’s point of death they would be reunited. What does this tell a believer? That even an adulterer and murderer like King David can be forgiven. That even in our times of deepest despair, God’s mercy is still extended. David did not earn God’s forgiveness. He believed in God’s Gospel and trusted in God’s mercy that his soul was saved eternally. He elaborated on this in Psalm 51, which he wrote after this incident:

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. – Psalm 51:1-8.

This beautiful Psalm shows the way to Heaven. And it starts with recognizing one’s sin. David confessed his sin to the Lord in clear and bold fashion. And he recognized that is God who “cleans” and “washes” us of that sin. How? By the blood of Jesus Christ, the Messiah and Son of God. Jesus’ sacrifice was the payment for our sins. It is what allows God to justly forgive a person of their sins because in putting their faith in Christ, a person’s rightful punishment was taken on by Jesus on the cross. Jesus stepped in the place of King David and every other person who has ever lived, to suffer in their place. And it only takes faith in Christ’s sacrifice to receive forgiveness of sin. This is what the Bible is all about. If a person was making a movie about the Bible, it would probably be a good idea to include this very, extremely important and critical message in the film. But instead what did The Bible Miniseries do? Eliminate it altogether and turn David into a petulant brat who has no remorse or repentance and tells God “we’ll see about that!” This incredibly heretical and blasphemous in its distortion of the Holy Bible.

Recall that the ‘Son of God’ movie is mostly made from parts of The Bible Miniseries with extra scenes added in. For more details of the horrific alterations of Scripture and the Bible’s message of forgiveness of sin in Christ, see our article, “The Bible Miniseries: Hollywood Heresy.”

2. The ‘Biblical Advisors’ of The Bible Miniseries – Producing Rotten Fruit

Is The Son of God film Biblical? | Heresy and false teachings Roma Downey Mark Burnett

Rick Warren, an advisor to the film, has been a major promoter of The Son of God.

“We weren’t qualified to teach the Bible, but we knew plenty of people who were,” – The Bible mini-series co-creator Mark Burnett, speaking of the panel of spiritual advisors who helped make the mini-series.

“[Miniseries Co-Creator Mark Burnett] would send scripts our way and ask doctrinal or Bible questions about it, but a lot of it was a friendship and an advisory role,”[Pastor Joel] Osteen said. Osteen said much of his work was confirming if the extra biblical material stayed true to the Bible. (source).

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. – Jesus Christ, The True Son of God, Matthew 7:15-20.

Rick Warren apostate false teacher | Is The Son of God film biblical?

The Son of God film also provides books, sermons and study kits for sale.

A quick look at the Board of Advisors on The Bible Miniseries and it becomes quite obvious that it was bound to contain heretical portrayals of the Scriptures. Prosperity Gospel preacher T.D. Jakes, Rick Warren of Saddleback Church and Joel Osteen of Lakewood Church, the largest church in the United States are the three most prominent names. As Beginning and End has detailed in past articles, all three pastors teach Unbiblical, New Age, false doctrines. In our article on T.D. Jakes we showed that in addition to preaching the money-focused prosperity Gospel, he also has yoked with New Age promoter Oprah Winfrey. Joel Osteen preaches a message of New Age mysticism that can be found in many books and websites on witchcraft, while Rick Warren has been a major promoter of a one-world religion that merges other faiths with Christianity.

Son of God Christian Review | Apostasy and heresy

New Age mystic Joel Osteen, far left, was one of the main “spiritual advisors” to Son of God co-creators Roma Downey and Mark Burnett, right.

Osteen specifically, stated that he was a script advisor for The Bible Miniseries. Here is the pastor openly denying Jesus Christ as the only way to salvation:

So in addition to his New Age doctrines, Osteen has openly denied Jesus Christ. His teachings are wildly unbiblical and fall under the category of corrupt fruit. And the clear word of Scripture is that no “good fruit” will come from a corrupt tree. So says, the True Son of God, Jesus Christ. Who do you believe?

3. The Creators of Son of God – Yoked With The Occult

Is the Son of God movie accurate? | False teachings and New Age doctrine of Roma Downey

The Bible Miniseries Co-creator Roma Downey on the cover of the New Age OM Magazine.

As detailed in our article on the Bible Miniseries, Roma Downey, co-creator of The Bible Miniseries and the Son of God, adheres to a number of New Age and occult doctrines and practices. Roma Downey has been celebrated for her co-creation of The Bible Miniseries and being an outspoken “Hollywood Christian.” Known for her role in the 90s drama “Touched By An Angel” in which she played an angel who comes to Earth to help people with problems, her name on The Bible Miniseries lent a great deal of Christian credibility. But looking a little closer at the testimony of Downey and it becomes apparent she is more involved with New Age mysticism than Biblical Christianity.

In 2010 Downey graduated from The University of Santa Monica with a Degree in Spiritual Psychology (the entire school is dedicated to the study of Spiritual Psychology and “Soul-centered Education”). The University describes this field as:

Spiritual Psychology is the study and practice of the art and science of human evolution in consciousness… “surrendering” and “sacrificing” is work that can and has been called “healing,” which includes healing on the physical, mental, and emotional levels in service to the deeper revelation of who we truly are as Loving, Peaceful, Compassionate, and Joyful beings. We refer to this level of awareness as the Authentic Self…

Put another way, Spiritual Psychology is a technology that empowers students to convert their everyday life experience into rungs on the ladder of Spiritual Evolution…” (source).

Downey also said in an interview:

‘My kids go to school about a 40-minute drive away. I’m open to the group’s opinion about what we listen to on the way there. On the way back, I get my own selections — books on tape by Eckhart Tolle, Tony Robbins…My husband says I’m so self-realized I’m practically levitating.’ (source).

“Self-realization” is a term in New Age and Eastern mysticism for achieving godhood, or releasing one’s true “inner divine self” through spiritual practices. Eckhart Tolle, a New Age guru and author of the book, A New Earth, promoted many doctrines that are contrary to Biblical Christianity. Among them:

“…heaven is not a location but refers to the inner realm of consciousness…. Earth, on the other hand, is the outer manifestation in form, which is always a reflection of the inner…. ‘A new heaven’ is the emergence of a transformed state of human consciousness, and ‘a new earth’ is its reflection in the physical realm.”[1,p.23]
“Recognize the ego for what it is: a collective dysfunction, the insanity of the human mind…. Nobody is wrong. It is the ego in someone, that’s all.” (p. 76).
“You realize your true identity as consciousness…. That’s the peace of God. The ultimate truth of who you are is not I am this or I am that, but I Am.” (p. 56-57).

These doctrines are in clear contradiction to the Bible which states that Heaven is indeed a real place, as is hell. And rather than say “nobody is wrong” the Bible is quite clear that we are all sinners. Romans chapter 3 says: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” All people (this author included) have sinned. All people are deserving of God’s wrath. The New Age movmement seeks to eliminate the concept of sin or judgment of God. And this is a satanic deception. Beloved, if a person does not believe in sin, then they have no need for a Savior.

Is The Son of God movie faithful? | False teachings and apostasy of Roma Downey

Roma Downey collaborated on a book that teaches prayers to Mary.

Downey has also promoted her occult practice of necromancy – communicating with the dead. She has worked with TV psychic Johnathan Edwards, who is renowned for his ability to speak with the dead. Against these are clear sins in Scripture:

There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. – Deuteronomy 18:10-12.

“Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.” – Leviticus 19:31.

The Bible could not be clearer that contacting the dead is rebellion against God. Downey not only practices necromancy, she appeared on Edwards’ TV show to have an on-air séance. In addition, she collaborated on a book with Edwards teaching the heretical Roman Catholic practice of “praying the rosary.” In the book Edwards encourages readers to “pray the rosary” a practice of holding a Catholic Crucifix necklace and uttering repetitive chants in prayers to Mary, the mother of Jesus in the Bible. This practice is sinful for several reasons. As shown above, Christians are not to communicate with the dead. Whether it is a relative, someone from the Bible or a celebrity, any attempts to speak with the dead is necromancy. Secondly, Mary was just a normal person. We are not to pray to her, hail her or seek anything from God through Mary. 1 Timothy 2:3 says: “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” It is Jesus Christ who is our advocate with God The Father. The Son of God goes further by showing a scene after the crucifixion where the Apostle Peter is leading the disciples (all 13 of them) in The Lord’s Supper. This scene never took place in the Bible but serves the unbiblical Roman Catholic doctrine that Peter was the “first Pope.” Once again, there is no pope in the Bible or substitute Christ (save for the Antichrist).

Jesus Christ is our High Priest who we take our prayers too. Jesus Christ, the True Son of God said: “But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking,” (Matthew 6:7). Repetitive chants or mantras, are occult practices. Jesus Christ was clear that Christians were not to do this as it is not a proper way of prayer. Prayer for a Christian should be open confession of sin and petitions – asking God for help in areas of life or for others. It’s a frank, open speaking from the heart, not repeated chants as if trying to cast a spell. Yet not only does Roma Downey ignore the Son of God’s clear teaching, she made a CD with John Edwards in which she does a series of repetitive prayers for the listener to repeat and chant themselves. What spirit is guiding the creator of the Son of God movie? What kind of fruit is coming the creators?

4. It Stars Another Jesus

Is The Son of God film Biblical? | Heresy and apostasy of Joel Osteen and Rick Warren

“And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.” – Matthew 24:4-5.

Much of the Gospel accounts are altered inexplicably in the Son of God movie. Among some of the errors:

Here is that same account in the actual Bible:

And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him. – Luke 5:1-11.

Notice Peter’s reaction to the miracle that Jesus had performed. He and his men were fishing all night and caught nothing. There was seemingly, no way to catch any. Yet Peter believed Jesus’ words and obeyed him. Why? Because first off, Jesus was teaching people from Peter’s ship. He was preaching the Gospel which the Bible calls: “the power of God unto salvation…” And after the miracle, Peter dropped to a position of worship and said “Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” Recognizing one’s own sin before the morally perfect God and Lord that is Jesus Christ, is key to going to Heaven. This is again a critical aspect of how a person is saved from the wrath of God and the lake of fire. Peter understood he was in the presence of Divine Power and did not feel worthy. Yet Jesus encourages him by inviting him to come with him to “catch men”, meaning bringing more people to believe in Christ. And Peter “forsook all”, meaning he gave up everything he was doing with his life on the spot, to follow Jesus. All of this is what a person has to do in order to go to Heaven. Acknowledging your sin, confessing it to God, believing in Jesus Christ and giving up your past life of sinful ways and letting your own heart rule, in order to follow Jesus and let Him be Lord of your life, is all a part of being a born again Christian.

Does The Son of God illustrate these powerful points? Not at all. Instead of being astonished and worshiping at the feet of Jesus Character, Peter asks him “How did this happen? What did you do?” as if he had no idea what was going on. The Jesus Character (who looked like the renaissance era/Catholic depictions of Jesus) responds: “I am giving you the chance to change your life..giving up catching fish and I will make you a fisher of men.” Peter answers “What are we going to do?” showing he still does not really understand if Jesus is divine or why it would be necessary for people to know Jesus. And the Jesus character’s answer is “Change the world.” No mention of sin, acknowledging of Jesus as God in the flesh or a real salvation message. Instead it is almost a social justice message. Jesus Christ did not come to change the world, He came to save it from its sin. Without understanding that sin is the greatest problem the world is facing, Jesus’ message could be changed to just helping the poor, or providing water wells to communities in drought or working in a homeless shelter. All these actions, while noble, will not get you to Heaven or make one right before God. This is the problem with many churches as they put overemphasis on “changing the world” without first changing the sinful heart that has led a person into sin and damnation, lest they believe the Gospel. And the false doctrines being preached today, while exciting are not Biblical. Do not be deceived.

Should Christians see The Son of God movie? | False teaching and heresy in The Son of God

The Mary Magdalene character, left, is featured in every major scene in the film.

  • Prominence of Mary Magdalene – Mary Magdalene, a true believer in Jesus Christ, is not very featured in the Gospels, as she only occurs in a small number of the accounts of Jesus’ life. In The Son of God movie, she is “the 13th disciple” right along with Jesus and the twelve disciples at every key event. As one excellent Christian review stated:

“But in the film, there are 13 apostles, and the thirteenth apostle is a woman named Mary. Not only is she always with them, but she’s with them in the boat during the storm when Jesus walks on water; she’s with them when they travel privately, though in the Scriptures, Jesus pulled aside and taught only The Twelve…men. Mary is also very outspoken and often reproves the male apostles to have more faith as it is very apparent her faith is stronger.During the crucifixion scene when Jesus is being jeered at by the crowd, Mary defends Jesus and shouts “Leave him be!” Wow, brave gal, huh? Braver than the male apostles who never speak up or do anything heroic or faithful. Then when Jesus is resurrected, she’s the first (and only woman) to enter the empty tomb. She also accompanies Peter and John who later come to the empty tomb to see for themselves. In Scripture, three women go to the tomb early in the morning and are greeted by angels who remind them that Jesus said He would rise on the third day. In the movie, she and the apostles remember all this on their own.” (source).

Mary Magdalene is a virtual celebrity in New Age and pagan circles. There are even Gnostic churches devoted to her. And all of this based on heretical and blasphemous writings about a woman who was indeed a believer, but never one of the twelve disciples. She also was not the wife, girlfriend or “right hand woman” to Jesus Christ. With all the deception promoted by blasphemous books such as The DaVinci Code, History Channel documentaries and other “entertainment vehicles” based on the heretical Gnostic Gospels, you would think someone making a “Christian film” would be very wary of this be faithful to the limited account of Mary Magdalene. Instead, the Joel Osteen-approved Son of God film just adds to the confusion.

Is the Son of God movie Biblical? | New Age apostasy Roma Downey Mark Burnett

The Son of God clearly promotes Mary Magdaelene (far left) as one of the disciples.

Mary Magadalene’s account in Scripture, as a woman once possessed by demons who was healed by Jesus and then became a born-again believer – is one to celebrate. But it shoudl be right alongside the numerous other people who Jesus healed in Scripture who then professed their faith in Him as The True Son of God.

  • No mention of sin – In The Son of God, the Jesus Character somehow neglects to mention sin and the need for forgiveness (a glaring omission throughout The Bible miniseries as well). Again, if someone is making a movie about Jesus Christ and trying to share the Gospel this is a key element. The true Jesus Christ of the Bible said: “beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Both of these groups groups were the established “megachurch” preachers of their day, who drew the biggest audiences, garnered the most worldly respect and put on the best appearances of running a truly Godly ministry. But in fact, their doctrine was corrupt and heretical. Jesus referred to their doctrine as “leaven” (another term for yeast) to illustrate an important point – just as a bowl of bread dough only needs a pinch of leaven, so too can false teachers just add a small amount of their false teachings to true Biblical teaching. But soon, like leaven permeates an entire loaf of bread, so too will the false teaching permeate the doctrine. The Son of God film is a perfect example of how the leaven works.

5. It’s Going To Test You

Heresy and errors in the Son of God film | Inaccurate portrayals and No Gospel

There are some beautiful, powerful scenes in Son of God. But that does not change or correct its many errors.

Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. – Matthew 10:34-35.

Jesus Christ was clear that His message was divisive. And today, it is clear that the message of Christ has become one of the divisive issues in all of society. And within the church, the division increases with works like the Son of God. The Christian church has entered an age of rampant apostasy, watered down doctrine and a lack of respect for the Word of God. There has been such a rush to celebrate a Hollywood retelling of the Gospel, that thousands if not millions of Christians have no concern for the inaccuracies, heretical doctrines or occult and New age roots of The Bible Miniseries. Many pastors have rented out theaters, given away thousands of tickets and basically commanded their congregations to run and support the film. And while curiosity about the film or a desire to give a film about Jesus a chance is perfectly understandable – a Pastor, in a position of authority over his congregation has a greater duty. Telling your congregants to see a film is an open endorsement of its creators. And in the case of The Son of God, it means these pastors are endorsing Catholic mystics and New Age heretics. This is just the type of “Christian unity” that will come in the end times as more and more apostate churches abandon Biblical Christianity in preparation for the one-world religion of the Antichrist.

Christian writers have praised the film, that despite its “liberties” with the Bible, should be celebrated because it will “open discussions about Jesus.” If you are a Christian – a real born again, Bible-believing Christian, then your purpose in life is clear: Jesus Christ, the son of God said: “Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations…”

You do not need a movie to start a “discussion about Jesus.” Preach the Gospel to those around you. Share Gospel tracts with family, friends and co-workers. Open the Bible with your children and read it to them. Find a Bible-believing church and attend. If the Church is relying on Hollywood to open doors to preach the Gospel, it will be waiting for a very long time. The True Son of God needed no entertainment vehicle to preach. He just needed people around Him. We are to follow His example. And certainly if the Church is going to be excited it should not be over fruit from a corrupt tree, like The Son of God movie.

So where do you stand, Christian? Are you willing to rush after a heretical film and promote it, despite its glaring errors? Are you willing to take in the leaven that The True Son of God said should be avoided, lest you become completely leavened? Are you willing to put popular sentiment among the apostate church and rock star false pastors over the clear commands and words of Jesus Christ? Are you going to listen to your heart over The True Son of God who said the Bible is truth? Or will you be yoked with the New Age movement and the occult? This is the test. And it will produce ugly results. Many will be upset and offended by this article. But why? Because of their passion for God’s Word or due to their excitement that Hollywood is “giving us a chance”?

This author’s sincere hope and prayer is that Christians become united over the Bible and it being presented in “spirit and truth.” The spirit and enthusiasm of the church is certainly present today – but the commitment to truth – meaning accurate, Biblical preaching, is lacking. If Christians want to make Christian film or presentations of the Bible, that is great. In this age, all media should be used to share the message of the Bible. But it should be done with the reverence, respect and care that our Savior deserves and is more than worthy of. That commitment, to be an ambassador for Christ and contend for the faith in every arena, is the best testimony a movie can give (even if it gets a thumbs down from Hollywood).

You seem very Pharisaical and overly religious about all these people who are promoting the Gospel. Sure, it’s not verbatim, but Jesus, himself said, ” he who is not against me is for me”. My question is , Who have you presented the Good News to lately in a LOVING way, in truth? Who have you laid hands on and prayed for healing, deliverance, restoration, and even raised the dead? The Gospel is not just in word, but in Deed too. So , get out from behind your computer, hit the streets and offer Hope, Life, Love, Reconciliation to the Father, Discern the needs of the People, even the least of these My Brethren!!!! And then you may find you have something worth PROCLAIMING FROM THE HO– USE TOPS, AND Stop Murmuring and Complaining. Maybe even do greater works than these, because Jesus went to the Father. Just remember, He is returning, and the Father gave all judgment to Him. May the Anointing of the Father fall upon you and Bless you and Restore your Soul. SLS.

Steven H. you are greatly discerning this movie. Thank you, brother. I watched this movie with my family as we would Captain America or Frozen, and because we didn’t expect much, we weren’t disappointed. One writer here thought it was good for friends and family to see the movie, because it opened a window of opportunity to present what the movie wasn’t.
As C. Spurgeon wrote, “Discernment is not knowing the difference between right and wrong. It is knowing the difference between right and almost right.” Too many “Christians” don’t care to know much more than what being preached from ANY pulpit, rather than examine what is Truth. The “truth will set you free” is preached throughout congregations across America, but how “free” do you see most people who regularly visit church buildings living? Could it be because they are not free?? Could it be because they’ve wasted their time trying to “free” themselves, as a falsely preached gospel presents???

        Hi there,
The first time i saw a trailer of the Movie i was disappointed. The “Jesus” that they portrayed did not speak scripture as it is and i immediately noticed that! It just wasn’t right! When you tell a story and you have the script in front of you (The Bible) why in this world would you change the words unless you had no value or wanted to discredit the Bible. I believe we should WAKE up and and stop living with Blinkers over our eyes. When you have a relationship with Jesus and walk in His ways and spend time in His Word, you will have decernment to know when something is not based on biblical truth. The Word of God is our Handbook, so we know what is right and what is wrong, and as the one person wrote “THERE are NO GREY” areas!
Check your source of the Hollywood producers. Why would they promote the TRUTH when there is NO truth in them. Satan comes as a angel of light to deceive and not looking like an ugly demonic creature that he is, otherwise one does not follow him.
Thanks for your website, Steven. Thank you for opening your mouth. I have noticed that opening ones mouth REALLY stirs up everything! Lets be bold for CHrist and stop following everything that shines!
Gods richest Blessings to all through our wonderful Jesus Christ!

First of all, Joel is a great entertainer, and he tap dances well around direct questions. He doesn’t hold a candle to his father. Secondly it’s more profitable and popular to take a lighter stance on alot of “hot button issues” . He could learn alot from someone like Jack Graham, or lets say Jerry Chaddick, Chuck Missler, Ed Young, and theres a few more I could mention that are not so liberal.

Its black and white and no gray area when it comes to the word of God.

Accept Jesus for who he really is, Confess your a sinner and ask him to be your personal Lord and Saviour or face the alternative. Human nature is to reject this because it takes us out of our sinful comfort zone. Most people dont want to hear the truth, no matter what anyone says, christianity requires a little effort, but it is worth it. I know you cant earn salvation, its a gift by the grace of God. However obedience and listening to God to the best of you’re ability I believe is required. It reflects your love for him and glorifies him as well. If I’m wrong, then he will judge me accordingly and not you or anyone else.

I love how we immediately bash anything that has to do with the advancement of the gospel. At least Hollywood is trying to incorporate God and the bible, at least its a change from the filth that is usually produced.
On another note which is your friend more likely to do, go see a movie or go to church wih you? Most people are going to accept the first offer. Buy your friends movie ticket, go see this movie or the noah movie, and afterwards show them what the bible really says and wittness to them, its that easy

        Hi Joshua Lowry

May grace, mercy and peace be multiplied unto you from God our Father through Jesus Christ our Lord.
First I just want to say, that [email protected] is in no way bashing the gospel. I consider rearranging the word of God as bashing the gospel. In fact the first sin entered the world by rearranging what God had said (Genesis 3:1-6). We are not to take any words or prophecy in the Bible and change them (Revelations 22:18-19). Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior warned us of false teachings and false messiahs (Matthew 24:23-26). It is a good conversation starter, however, it can lead people to false teachings, in that sense this movie is a doctrine of men which we are not to follow (2 Timothy 4:1-4, 1 Timothy 1:3-4). I urge you to search these scriptures I posted and find some of your own to help on your journey and walk with God. Only his word is truth. God bless

Many Christian movies are being released. Some tell all the truth, and some only part of the truth. If you have a relationship, with Jesus….take Him to those movies with you. But talk to Him first and ask Him to let you see the truth, and understand it, in each movie. Do not condem it if you haven’t seen it!! Because I think many of these movies ARE made to help bring in the Lost./ You should see these movies, so that you can defend the Scriptures, if they are presented right or wrong. You have God on your side, do not be afraid to walk thru the Valley, just be sure He is with you. I saw some of these movies already and they are pretty accurate. Men can and will deceive you…..but God never will. If what you see does not feel true, just ask God….He will not let you down! Praise God, always!

I feel like God may be using this Hollywood version of the life of Christ in ways that we may not understand. It may not be perfect, but if it gets one person to someone, who knows Christ, so they can be saved, then maybe it’s worth it. Even though the producers may be flakes or even evil, we know God has plans and uses evil for good in many instances. ie. The story of Joseph. Hollywood can influence many more people than we can imagine. The fact that the movie even got made and people are seeing it is surprising to me. I really don’t think the motives behind it are bad, even though much of the content is wrong. Shame on Osteen for allowing that to happen, and lining his pockets as a result. Maybe he “named it and claimed it” I certainly do not condone “cherry picking” the Bible as this seems to be. I know this message is not for current believers because we know the truth. However, maybe it will be a force to draw the unbelievers to a saving knowledge of Christ and reading of the Word. For that reason, I do not believe it is all bad. Olsteen’s name it, claim it philosophy is definitely wrong but many people would never have known Jesus if not through him. Rick Warren wrote “The Purpose Driven Life” and many Christians follow his belief that God has a purpose for us. Yes, it’s true that changing the Bible ” one jot or tittle” is wrong, but it could be that the movie was not made with malicious intent, mainly with lack of knowledge about Christ and the Bible. It’s too bad they chose Osteen to provide scriptural advise on this project. He will be judged more harshly because he is a teacher. Speaking of judging, is it right for us to judge? No. Only the Lord can judge. Maybe this show is the “little bit of sin that will corrupt the nation” as some say, but this commentary sounds like something a Pharisee would say. Is this movie wrong? Absolutely! Can we do anything about it? Yes, use it for God’s good. What if we put together a brochure to hand out after shows that talks about the “real truth” and extends an invitation to learn about it at the local church or a website set up that talks about truth? That would totally be a positive way to use what some would say is bad. What can we do to make this negative a positive for the Lord? That’s what I want to hear.

God doesn’t draw people to him via a fake Jesus. Have you ever seen throughout the bible where Jesus softened his stance on anything for the sake of saving ONE soul? Nowhere throughout the Gospel is “reaching a wider audience with false doctrine” ever approved….If all God wanted was the wider audience then Jesus could have worked with the same Pharisees he condemned since the Pharisees were like the mega churches of today. Instead, what we see is Jesus and the Apostles urging the teaching ONE gospel REGARDLESS of who they came across.

      1 Timothy 3 & 4- Paul instructs Timothy:

As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith.

SUCH THINGS PROMOTE CONTROVERSY AND NOT THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD….what do you think will happen when people see this false Jesus in pictures, then the Bible shows another Jesus?? controversy and NOT advancement.

Paul later in the same chapter say what he did….

      1 Timothy 19 & 20

…holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith. Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

Paul did NOT indulge false teaching in order to win souls, or will you say Paul was going against God?so why should we???

      Galatians 1:8

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

Do you see how important it is throughout the Bible that God’s word be preached AS IT IS??? An angel from heaven who preaches another gospel is accursed. That is a SERIOUS statement.

The Spirit does the drawing when WE preach the true Gospel. There is a warning at the end of Revelation not to add or take away ANYTHING….Does God want us to satisfy itching ears or save souls with the true teachings of salvation??

      • Cheryl says

        March 24, 2014 at 12:22 pm

Actually, if you look into the Old Testment you will see that God did change His stance on the city of Nineveh after all the people relented and began following the Lord. Jonah 3. Also, in Genesis 19, Abraham intercedes for Sodom and the Lord says that He will not destroy the city if ten people are found who are good. Should we throw out the Old Testament entirely since we now have the New Testament? No one is to preach false doctrinel, but the movie is not preaching. If the ministers promoting the movie to their congregations without clarifying the wrongs in the movies, then yes, I would say is definitely against God’s word. If the Lord is not willing that anyone should perish, but all should come to a saving grace of Christ, then why would you say that God is not looking for a wider audience. I understand what you are saying and I agree with you that the movie does have false doctrine. All I’m saying is that I know the Lord will use it to His advantage to advance the Kingdom of Heaven. No matter how wrong many of the scenes may be, don’t you think people will get the main lesson about Christ’s deity and want to know more? Do you really think those who become interested will only believe what they see in the movie? No, of course not, they will be lead to a church or a Christian who will then be able to direct their paths to truly know the Lord without deception. No one is saying that Mary Magdalene was a 13th disciple or that it is OK to pray to Mary. But does that change the overall truth that Jesus came to save us from our sins. I haven’t seen the movie, but I think the overall message is about truth. Many of the details of this movie are wrong, but the overall truth is strong enough to engage people and cause them to wonder about our Lord. While the details are wrong, I don’t think the Lord would want us to be divisive over them. If someone is preaching them, then yes, we should, as Christians, correct them. Otherwise, let Hollywood do what it wants and Christians take it and use it for God’s kingdom. I generally think Hollywood is evil and won’t allow my children into a Blockbuster. In this case I feel that we can’t do anything to stop Hollywood from showing the movie, so why shouldn’t we use it , if we can to promote the Lord’s kingdom and try to promote the message while explaining the inaccuracies. I understand what you believe and agree with you. On the other hand, let’s use it for good if we can.

          March 24, 2014 at 1:02 pm

do you want to use the word “spread” instead of “preach”? we are called NOT to spread any other Gospel but the TRUE gospel. There are no 2 ways about it

I’m not sure how the example of Sodom proves that God wants us to spread false doctrine to get people…….

God didn’t change his mind about Nineveh. The people repented. THAT is the point of the Gospel. All throughout the scripture God calls people to repentance! When people like Osteen , Jakes etc make another gospel that is focused on YOU realising all YOUR potential that is NOT a gospel from God. From the beginning God has taught that to serve HIM it is all about denying yourself. The word “SIN” has been absent throughout A LOT of these false doctrines and these doctrines are encouraged by what the Bible calls “seducing spirits”. Jesus prayed against those but yet we want people to start following seducing spirits…take away Sin from the mind of people and they see no need for a Saviour – only a man who did good things for the poor and needy when he was here, but he’s no different to any other “good man” who walked the earth before or after

And I said God’s aim is not about how large of an audience He can get as opposed to making sure the TRUE gospel is spread. He does not want any to perish, but you think God is going to say spread any gospel you want in my name so that nobody shuns it? Again, Jesus focused on the truth and NOT how many he could get by changing the gospel to a watered down version. When Jesus had thousands of followers and told them they must eat his flesh and drink his blood, how many were left after that? God says straight and narrow is the way….BUT FEW ARE THOSE WHO FIND IT. There’s a reason for that scripture.

The reason why Paul instructs us NOT to teach, preach, spread (whatever word you want) is because it causes controversy and it is NOT the gospel. You’re basically doing what Satan wants you to do, which is what he did since Genesis: mix the truth with some lies and catch people. The way to evangelise is NOT through hoping Hollywood garners some interest in Jesus and THEN you can come in…you evangelise with the WHOLE truth.

Have you seen in the Bible ANYWHERE where God’s people depended upon the preaching, teaching, spreading of false doctrines in the hope that God could then use that to his advantage? Why do we think we need to be different?

It’s not that I can’t handle watching any particular theme or genre (quite the opposite), it’s just that I am so sick of their tiresome left-wing socialist/communist zionist agendas that their output is so pathetic. All the new ‘blockbusters’ are so boring that I cannot endure 5 minutes of that ****. Hollywood is a joke, and there will always be sheeple who love to pay money to make themselves dumber. These actors that suck-up to their puppet-masters with their irritating left-wing propaganda just to continue employment in a job that requires being 100% fake – well, I just can’t bring myself to listen to their whiny voices.

If it was about real art, I’d be all for Hollywood. It is not.

Secondly, I must admit that when it came out, I thought the Bible miniseries was a wonderful depiction of some very famous Bible stories. I feel kind of dirty after reading this and your article on the miniseries. Pray for me and other Christians who were duped into thinking this was a blessing instead of the deception which it evidently is.

Thirdly, after reading this, it got me thinking about Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ”. I’m sure you’ve seen that movie. I’ve seen it multiple times, and every time, I come away with a renewed thankfulness for what Jesus did out of his own love for humanity. Is there an article which you’ve written on that movie? If not, I would love to hear your incites on it. Or could you post a link to the article if you’ve already written one?

Lastly, do you know of other Christian blogs that would be beneficial to reading? If there anything like this, they need to be shared as well.

Somebody makes a movie from the bible but not accurate.
is that a good thing? it is but you make it a bad thing.

    you are being too religious.
should people be dependent on a movie or actual bible?

christians just want a bible movie to be exactly what they wanted or have in mind.
it is the same with games movies.
If the game movie adaptation doesn’t have anything to do with the storyline of the game, gamers piss on it.
Why should the movie be the exact thing as the game? it would mean they are watching the same thing they played but without actually playing it.

Which turns to this. People have read the bible story, instead they should expect different things in the directors view, they want the exact scenes and words as the bible described it. What is the point them? you are better off reading the bible than watching exactly what you can read.

I’m abosolutely shocked that you believe this. Jesus makes it very clear to not take out, or add in anything. Please read!

For I protest unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book.
And if any man shall diminish of the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy City, and from those things which are written in this book.
      Revelation 22:18-19 1599 Geneva Bible

Ye shall put nothing unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye take ought there from, that ye may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.

Put nothing unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
      Proverbs 30:5-6 1599 Geneva Bible

Yes Xino, it is heresy, blasphemy, and frankly it’s just plain dumb to change the word of God. I’ll pray for you that you will continue to learn and grow in the word of our Lord and Saviour. May God bless you always!

Each time I see how many people splice words look for loop holes apply scholastic comparison I believe they don’t get God or Jesus or what the faith is all about. If you know Jesus then you will be able to discern the truth from the non truth. Because faith is about getting to a deep connection with Jesus, finding in the world gifts of His blessings and graces. Ask for enlightenment from the Holy Spirit and The Lord God will lead you to Him.
This article is just as bad because it misses the message of Jesus which is to love. Abundance is not always wealth it is a feeling of love and abundance that is from God. it is wealth in different terms. The Lord wants us to be whole in Him. Sin is just a definition of the absence of God and being away from God’s mold. It seems so complicated to many because they don’t want to keep the commandments and try to find confirmation that what they do is right because they cannot accept the morality that Jesus teaches.
Please spend your time finding God and helping people who need help. By doing so you will experience and you will find the definition of his love and his teachings.
Don’t waste your time arguing about sentences if you don’t get the faith and what Jesus taught you will not find it there.

Power and glory be unto the God and Father of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; the God and Father of Abraham, Isaac and Israel; the most High God, the living God.

Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is the very essence of holiness and righteousness. He is the prophesied precious Lamb of God; sinless and without blemish and spot all of His life. Even now as He sits on the right hand of the throne of His holy Father which is in Heaven.

Can we say the same about the actor hired to so-called portray the Lord Jesus Christ? I don’t think we can because the man is human; given to carnal temptations and has probably lied, fornicated, stolen, blasphemed, cheated and et cetera at some point in his life. How can you ask an “earthly” man to portray a holy and righteous man? You cannot. For that reason, alone, I am not interested in the movie, or for that matter, any movie about the Bible that comes out of Hollywood – that modern day Sodom and Gomorrah.

Wow, you are certainly brainwashed. At least you seem genuinely earnest though, despite your annoying use of old English that wasn’t even spoken by Jesus. I have to say though, that Robert Powell did a pretty good job in 1977’s Jesus of Nazareth. In reality Jesus is much tougher than you seem to think. He’s not only the “Lamb”, he’s also the Lion of Judah (Revelation 5:5).

Thank you so much. The truth should not be watered down for any reason whatsoever. Jesus is the ONLY way to God. We are close to the end and as such, the devil is ramping up his devices. Christians should absorb the bible; “all scripture is inspired by God…” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). It is only when you know God’s word-not as preached by someone else, perhaps an impostor,-that you would be able to see through the ruses that abound all around us. God bless-In Jesus name.

    Detractor:

That is exactly the point of the article. It is because of LOVE that JESUS died for our sins. Why would a Judge die for the convicted criminal? Congruously, how can the movie-and miscellaneous- claim to portray this awesome picture without pointing out the very reason for Jesus’ sacrifice? Jesus died to save us from the eternal death wrought by sin and as such, any depiction whatsoever of Jesus has to clearly point this fact out.

Some of your topic are true, but you failed about Mother Mary (no wonder, you are not catholic). Scripture prove that Mary has big role about salvation, first she accepted being a mother of God not minding the death penalty ( having a baby without father), secondly she said that “all generation shall call me blessed” which is the clear sign of being a true followers of her Son Jesus Christ and only few Christian venerate Mother Mary. God bless you, please read the warningsecondcoming message, you maybe laugh at the prophetic message but if Moses is in our present time, we will ridicule and laugh at him also for saying that he saw and spoke to God in the Burning Bush and also to Noah building an ark at summer time.

How do you know what the Bible is? Did the Holy Spirit reveal it to you? You may not even be seeing the trees or the forest.

Children know that movies are fiction. Using the worldly tecniques used by those critical of the movie being discussed, I could find extreme error in their way of following Christ, flaws in their interpretation of the Bible, and immaturity in their spiritual development but with love I can try to avoid that type of condemnation.

I pray that the Holy Spirit will guide us and show us our flawed, all too human, superior than thou attitude when it comes to straining gnats. The movie can lead people to Jesus Christ. Our personal relationship with Jesus shows us a Jesus that no one else sees because we are all uniquely made in the image of God.

If you want to keep your “superior than thou attitude” you can just think that these movies are for the lost.

Have you ever read about what psychological needs are met by having “superior than thou attitudes?”

It could be argued that the 11 major world religions will lead to Jesus Christ. If the role of Mary Magdalene was exaggerated or mildly embellished and it helped attract people that would not otherwise have identified with the Christian religion then that is good. Does that take away from the powerful message of the Gospel? The message of the Bible is not frail. A man who brought more people to Christ than any modern day figure probably, Saint Francis, never condemn people for their religion. When comparing the fruit of your labor are you a better missionary than St. Francis?

I couldn’t get past the first 15 minutes of this piece of trash movie. Watching Jesus portrayed as such a cornball was just too embarrassing to sit through. Those behind the movie couldn’t possibly be genuine followers of Christ’s teachings. It’s only purpose was to further alienate people from listening to what Jesus really believed.

Thank God that there are those willing to stand up for Christ in Hollywood. Roma and her husband and crew have blessed millions of people worldwide. The spirit of the one and only “Son of God”, Jesus Christ has anointed this movie. May God have mercy on the souls of those who are defaming it.I think a lot of pastor’s probably didn’t like this movie because the actor portraying Jesus was so nice looking. Why don’t some of these men attack Sports Illustrated for it’s swimsuit edition. They would find out they were doing a Christian service then. Oh well…most of them would have to throw away their copy first. Anyway you people who hate this movie should examine your hearts and lives before critizing.! God loves a giving heart.and Roma has one.

Recently I was asked to be a substitute for the theology class, and the teacher was showing this film. I suggested that the students be asked to see if there were anything in the movie that did not line up with the Bible. The teacher agreed and suggested the first thing she noticed was that the actor did not look at all like what the Scriptures say He would. The second day, I made up a true/false list of scenes for the class to use as an evaluation tool. They were much more engaged with this study tool, and some even were able to explain why the wise men were not present at Jesus’ birth. I totally agree that discernment is absolutely necessary, and the checklist for anyone seeing the movie for any reason should be a must. Some entertainment is just worthless and can be relegated to the round file, but things like this go beyond worthless, to deceptive, dangerous, destructive, and even evil as the serpent in the garden.
