Are Christians Under The Law? Understanding The Law And The Gospel

The Mosaic Law | Are Christians required to follow the ten commandments and Levitical laws? Bible Study

Are Christians required to follow the Mosaic Law? The Bible emphatically says no.

—- Are Christians Under The Law? Do The Ten Commandments Apply To Christians? How Were The Old Testament Saints Saved? Do Christians Still Have To Follow The Ten Commandments? —-

These questions are all very valid ones that any Christian should be able to answer. What role does the Levitical law play in the life of a Christian? Were people in the Old Testament saved by the law? This study will explain the differences between the law, the Gospel and the covenants of God to show that no true, born again believer in Jesus Christ is required to follow the laws of the Mosaic covenant and that none of the laws, even the ten commandments, apply to Christians today. This article will also explain what “laws” Christians are under today and why we are free from the burdens of the Levitical law through Jesus Christ.

Understanding The Covenants

At various points in the Bible, The Lord entered into covenants with individuals, nations and the world at large. Webster’s 1828 dictionary (which was based on the language of the King James Bible) defines a “covenant” as:

1. A mutual consent or agreement of two or more persons, to do or to forbear some act or thing; a contract; stipulation. A covenant is created by deed in writing, sealed and executed; or it may be implied in the contract. (source).

This article will focus on three covenants: 1) the Mosaic or “Old Covenant”, 2) the covenant between God and Abraham or the “Abrahamic Covenant”, and 3) the “New Covenant” of Jesus Christ. To understand the purpose of the law it is critical to understand the function and interaction of these three covenants.

The Abrahamic Covenant

And [Abraham] believed in the LORD; and [The Lord] counted it to him for righteousness. – Genesis 15:6.

The covenant between God and Abraham featured a series of promises that God would fulfill for Abraham. God initiated the covenant and was going to perform the actions in the covenant Himself. The chief promise was that Abraham would be a land of his own and a large number of descendants:

And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered. Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee. – Genesis 13:14-17.

The Sign of The Covenant

Sign of the covenant | Are Christians required to follow the ten commandments | The law and the Gospel

Every covenant requires a signature or sign that you are in agreement and a part of it.

Here is a key concept in understanding Scripture. Abraham believed God´s promises to Him and thus received the blessings by his faith. However The Lord still wanted Abraham´s signature on the covenant . The sign of this covenant was circumcision:

As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. – Genesis 17:1-13.

It should be clear here that sign of the covenant being maintained in the family of Abraham was circumcision of every son born in his house. The word “token” (or ‘owth in Hebrew) in verse 11 means a sign. God further stresses the importance of this sign by saying: “And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.” (Genesis 17:14). Merely being a physical descendant of Abraham was not enough to be a part of the covenant. Circumcision was required for all males as their signature to the agreement made between The Lord and Abraham. Similarly today, when two people or companies make a contract, it is not “official” until both parties sign the document, thus showing that they are personally in agreement with its terms and have faith the other party will deliver on what they promise (because you would never enter into a contract with someone you had no faith would perform their part of the agreement).

Thus the covenant was established with Abraham and passed on to a specific son in each generation via a blessing from a patriarch. In Exodus 2:24 when Abraham’s descendants, the ancient Israelites, were in slavery in Egypt as God had prophesied, The Lord specifically refers to the Abrahamic covenant:

And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them. – Exodus 2:23-25.

All of the “children of Israel” were direct descendants of Abraham who were a part of the Abrahamic covenant by faith in God and through the sign of circumcision. In Exodus, we see the time of the slavery of the Israelites come to an end as God commissioned Moses to lead the nation out of Egypt and to the Promised Land, that God contracted to give to Abraham back in Genesis 15. But before entering that land, another covenant was established – the Mosaic Covenant.

Understanding The Law of Moses – The Old Covenant

Are Christians required to follow the Old Testament? | Bible study on the puspose of the old covenant

The Mosaic Covenant served a very specific purpose. And it was not salvation.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them. – Exodus 24:12.

There is a great deal of confusion about the law of Moses, also known as the Mosaic law, “the law” or the Old Covenant. When The Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness, He made an offer to the nation of Israel to enter into a covenant with Him. God provided a series of laws and if they were followed, the Israelites would receive numerous blessings. If they were broken, they would receive a series of curses as punishment.

And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do. And Moses wrote all the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. And he sent young men of the children of Israel, which offered burnt offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto the LORD. And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basons; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar.

And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient. And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words. – Exodus 24:3-8.

There are several important details in this passage. Notice that this covenant was optional. The Israelites chose to enter this covenant with God and agreed unanimously as a nation to fulfill it. Also note that unlike the Abrahamic covenant, the burden of performance was on the Israelites. In the Abrahamic covenant, God promised to provide certain blessings to Abraham based on the faith Abraham had in God. The Mosaic covenant was a series of promises the Israelites made to God to perfectly follow all of the laws given by The Lord. Once the contract was agreed to, Moses sprinkled blood on all of the people ratifying the contract.

The Sign Of The Mosaic Covenant

Are Christians required to follow the Old Testament? | Bible study on the puspose of the old covenant

The Sabbath was a the sign of the Mosaic covenant and a reminder of the day God rested in the creation week.

Like the Abrahamic Covenant, the law of Moses had a sign: the Sabbath. This is established in Exodus 31:

Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed. And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God. – Exodus 31:14-18.

Like circumcision, keeping the Sabbath was a clear required sign to being a member of the Mosaic covenant. It was the signature every individual had to make to show they personally were in contract with The Lord. Notice once again, God says that any person who does not have this sign is “cut off” just as he said with circumcision. God followed this pronouncement by giving Moses the two tables of stone which had the ten commandments written on them by The Lord Himself. And this leads to another important concept – the ten commandments are the “Old Covenant.”

The Ten Commandments Are The Old Covenant

Does the mosaic covenant apply to Christians? | Are Christians required to follow the ten commandments?

The Ten Commandments are the Old Covenant.

There are over 600 laws given in the Mosaic Covenant, but the ten commandments given by God comprise the actual covenant itself. All of the other laws were supplements to explain in more detail what the commandments forbid (for example, the numerous laws regarding under what conditions a woman can be remarry and fornication, expand on the command of “thou shalt not commit adultery”). But Scripture is clear that the 10 commandments are the covenant:

And the LORD said unto Moses, Write thou these words: for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel. And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. – Exodus 34:27-28.

At two points in this passage the ten commandments are called the covenant.

And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone. – Deuteronomy 4:13.

When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water: And the LORD delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the LORD spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly. And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the LORD gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant.

And the LORD said unto me, Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten image. Furthermore the LORD spake unto me, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven: and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they. So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount burned with fire: and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands. – Deuteronomy 9:9-11.

So by the clear testimony of Moses, the ten commandments indeed comprised the old covenant. The other approximately 600 laws in the Old Testament were supplemental to give more detail on specific sins and the system of sacrifices for sin covering. Here is another examples from King Solomon:

There was nothing in the ark save the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt. And I have set there a place for the ark, wherein is the covenant of the LORD, which he made with our fathers, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt. – 1 Kings 8:9, 21.

The Purpose of The Old Covenant

Hebrew roots movement exposed heresy | Does the old covenant apply to Christians?

The Law reminds all people we have broken God’s law.

At this point in Biblical history, the nation of Israel was under two covenants: the Abrahamic and the Mosaic covenant or the Law. So since the Abrahamic covenant provided the promised Land and the Messiah, what was the actual purpose of the Mosaic covenant? Scripture of course provides the answer:

Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. – Galatians 3:16-20.

So we see that there is a major distinction between the Abrahamic covenant and the Mosaic. The covenant God made with Abraham was comprised of God’s promises to bless Abraham and his seed. No work or performance was required on Abraham’s part aside from faith in God’s Word. The Mosaic covenant was conditional on the performance of Israel. It required human performance and obedience, which of course, was not perfect as God is perfect in His performance and honesty. And thus, the promises God made to Abraham cannot be annulled by the Mosaic law. And there is no divine inheritance in the mosaic law – because all the promises of land and salvation were made to Abraham and his seed. So what was the purpose of the Mosaic law? It was to serve as guidelines and divine standards on sin and atonement until “the seed should come.” And who is “the seed”? It’s Jesus Christ.

So from the onset, the Mosaic Law had an expiration date. It was only in effect, until Jesus Christ, the prophesied Messiah, the “seed of the woman” from Genesis 3 and the Savior who was the “seed” promised to Abraham, arrived on Earth.
Additionally, it was impossible for any person to obey the Old Covenant. It required perfect obedience to every command:

But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee: – Deuteronomy 28:15.

This is confirmed in James chapter 2:

For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. – James 2:10.

Any person trying to justify themselves by keeping the Mosaic law is required to PERFECTLY observe every single law. There were no exceptions in the covenant. Let this be a lesson and warning to any ministry, pastor or group who teach that somehow keeping the Mosaic law can lead to Heaven or some extra blessing. Scripture is clear – it requires 100% obedience or you are guilty of violating all of it and cursed in God’s eyes.

Of course, since Israel was composed of normal human beings, who are all sinners, the Old Covenant was broken. And still today, if any person is in sin, absent God’s grace, the curse of their sin remains and the wrath of God abides over them. So then what hope did the people in ancient times have? How could they ever hope to go to Heaven with such a covenant hanging over their heads, which they unanimously agreed to enter into? It was by the New Covenant that all people were saved. And in the book of Jeremiah The Lord announced this part of the plan of salvation:

Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. – Jeremiah 31:31-33.

So even back in the Old Testament and during a time Israel was being punished with the Babylonian captivity, God was already announcing that the Old Covenant (the covenant made after coming out of the land of Egypt) was broken and that a new covenant between God and humanity would be established. And this New Covenant is established by Jesus Christ.
The Mosaic law, rather than being a way to go to Heaven – was a reminder of the sin and transgression which all people committed. It served as the clear proof that every person was indeed in violation of God’s law and under the curse. And in doing this, it shows that every sinner needs a savior, thus pointing to Jesus Christ (the “seed” promised to Abraham), for salvation through faith:

Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Therefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. – Hebrews 7:21-25.

So Scripture is clear that salvation is and always has been achieved through faith, not works of the law. Paul makes this even clearer in the book of Galatians, addressing a church that was infiltrated by “judaizers” – men who claimed that anyone who wanted to be Christian had to follow the law of Moses:

O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain. – Galatians 3:1-4.

Paul compared the belief that keeping the law saves to witchcraft. And he admonishes this church to remember that they were saved not by their works, but through faith. They received the Holy Spirit once they believed the Gospel, that Jesus Christ died for their sins and took the punishment of God’s wrath for them on the cross and rose on the third day. Believing that doing good works of the law can save makes the Christian life vanity. Why? Because it denies the faith in the work that Christ did. Christ’s work and sacrifice accomplishes everything for the Christian.

He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. – Galatians 3:5-9.

Paul then goes back to the Abrahamic covenant – the covenant that promised salvation by faith. He again emphasizes that Abraham was saved by faith – which was accounted as righteousness before God, meaning that God justified Abraham or declared him not guilty of sin because Abraham believed the promises of salvation which God told him directly. And this is how all people are saved. It is through faith not through keeping the Ten Commandments or the many other laws of the Mosaic covenant.

For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. – Galatians 3:10-14.

Those who try to justify themselves by keeping the commandments are in for a rude awakening – the reader is reminded once again that God stated that if one law is broken, then a person is cursed with all the curses that were listed in the law. No person can receive salvation this way. But a person can be saved and declared righteous before God by faith. How? Because Christ, living a sinless, perfect life was the only one able to offer Himself as a perfect atoning sacrifice, taking on the sins of humanity and the curse of sin and dying on the cross. Only to defeat death, sin and the grave by His resurrection, allowing all who believe in Him to partake in the blessings He earned and in eternal life. And true born again Christians are not bound to the Old Covenant any longer.

True Christians Are Dead To The Law

Does the mosaic covenant apply to Christians? | Hebrew roots movement exposed

The Lord uses marriage as an allegory of the old and new covenants.

Romans 7 illustrates how the separation from the Old Covenant takes place by using marriage as an allegory:

Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. – Romans 7:1-3.

Paul, addressing Jewish believers who knew the Mosaic law and lived by it all their lives, explains the rules of marriage they were familiar with – a married woman was bound to her husband as long as he was alive. If she left him for another man, she was committing adultery. But, if the husband died, the woman was free to marry another man. This was a picture of the unbeliever being under the law and then being freed from the law once she becomes a believer and enters into the New Covenant with Jesus Christ:

Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter. – Romans 7:4-6.

When a person is born again, their old spirit, which was of the world, dies and a new spirit is born in them. This spiritual death is what Paul calls becoming “dead to the law.” By believing in Christ’s death, the old marriage to the law is over and the new born again believer can be rightfully wed to Jesus Christ in the New Covenant. So none of the Old Covenant laws, including the ten commandments are a part of the covenant of a Christian who is a true born again believer in God.

Jesus Christ Preached A New And Better Covenant

As the rightful heir of the Abrahamic blessings, the entire world and the head of salvation of all people, Jesus Christ earned the right to establish the New Covenant. And for those who believe, Jesus serves as the High Priest in Heaven, interceding on behalf of all believers and providing forgiveness of their sins:

Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer. For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. – Hebrews 8:1-5.

Hebrews chapter 8 explains in detail that the instructions for the priesthood given to Moses when the Old Covenant was established was a type and shadow, patterned on the Heavenly tabernacle of which Jesus Christ is the true High priest:

But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. – Hebrews 8:6-9.

Jesus is the mediator of a better covenant. The New Covenant, which provides salvation through faith or belief is a superior covenant. Because it was not based on human performance, but on the promises of God. And here the writer quotes Jeremiah 31 where The Lord specifically announced that a new covenant would be established. And Jesus Christ is the mediator of this superior covenant.

Hebrews 8 concludes detailing the expiration of the Mosaic law:

For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away. – Hebrews 8:12-13.

Once a person put theirs faith and trust in Christ, their sins are forgiven forever. And the Old Covenant of the Law, vanishes away. This is why from the time Jesus began His ministry on Earth began, Jesus proclaimed His superiority to the Mosaic law. Notice in these examples from the sermon on the mount, Jesus quotes the Mosaic law and then shows that His standards are far superior:

Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. – Matthew 5:27-28.

Not only was intimacy outside of marriage adultery, but even looking at another person outside of marriage with lust was adultery in Jesus’ eyes.

Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. – Matthew 5:38-42.

Rather than getting even when someone wrongfully attacks you, Jesus said to resist evil and be peaceful even when someone is hitting you. And to give to those who demand too much of you. In these examples, Jesus is going beyond what the Mosaic law required and saying “But I say…” to show that His covenant is an even greater one because it goes to the heart and mind of a person, not just their outward behavior.
Christ Established The New Covenant

Does the Old Testament apply to Christians? | Are Christians under the law of Moses?

Jesus Christ established the New Covenant on the cross.

At the Last Supper – the Passover meal before the arrest and crucifixion, Jesus formally established the New Covenant:

And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom. – Matthew 26:26-29.

Just as Moses announced the Old Covenant with the blood of the lamb on hyssop 1500 years earlier, Jesus Christ raised the cup at Passover symbolically calling it His blood and announcing the New Covenant, for the remission of sins in His name. And His true blood was shed on the cross, forever removing the barriers between God and man:

Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; – Matthew 27:46-51.

At Christ’s death, the veil in the temple, which separated the Holy Place, where the priests performed their duties, from the Most Holy Place, where only the High Priest could enter once a year to offer up incense before God for the sins of the nation, was torn. No longer was there a need for the Mosaic law system of sacrifice and sin covering atonement. In Jesus Christ, the perfect sacrifice, there was forgiveness once and for all for all who believed. For those who are born again, there is only one High Priest, Jesus Christ. They are saved by faith, not works. And the law is now vanished away in their lives. No Christian is under any of the Mosaic law. All true, born again believers are entered into the New Covenant.

[B&E: And to be technical, if you believe following the Mosaic law is required of you (i.e., like many in the Hebrew Roots movement), then Jesus Christ cannot be your High Priest. Why? Because He is not a Levite. By the law of the Old Covenant, a priest can only be of the tribe of Levi and Jesus is of the tribe of Judah. Consider this carefully if you believe, preach or teach that Mosaic law-keeping is still in effect today.]

In order to go to Heaven a person must believe in Jesus Christ by faith and enter into the New Covenant. Anyone preaching that the Mosaic Law is required or that the Ten Commandments are the way of going to Heaven is preaching a false message. Scripture is clear that the Law’s purpose was to convict people of their sin and point them to the need for a Savior. All people have sinned except for the sinless Savior Jesus Christ. And it is only through faith in Him that a person can go to Heaven, not through their own good behavior or works.

This concludes this study. But it would be remiss to not address some of the obvious questions that can arise from the statements made in this article. So now we will attempt to do so.

Common Questions About The Law And the Gospel

Are Christians required to follow the Old Testament? | Bible study on the puspose of the old covenant

Some may have questions about this study.

“Didn’t Jesus Say ‘Until Heaven and Earth pass, not one jot or tittle shall pass from the law?”

This is a very good question. And the answer is that is not exactly what Jesus said. This passage is VERY often misquoted by pastors, teachers and churchgoers alike. Let’s look at exactly what Jesus said in this passage:

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. – Matthew 5:17-18.

In order to understand this passage it must be read completely. Notice that Jesus says “…one jot or tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, TILL ALL BE FULFILLED.” The point here is that Jesus was not saying that the law would never pass away. He was saying that the law would indeed pass away at a very specific time. When? When “all be fulfilled.” So the question the believer must ask is: when was all fulfilled?

A common response to this question is that Jesus fulfilled the law by living a sinless life and being perfectly obedient. While Jesus of course was without any sin, it is this author’s contention that that is not what is meant by “all be fulfilled.” The fulfillment of the books of the law and the prophets (Jesus mentions both in verse 17) was accomplished by Jesus fulfilling all of the many Messianic prophecies found in the Old Testament. Here are some examples to further support this:
At Jesus’ Birth

But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. – Matthew 1:19-23.

During Jesus’ Infancy

And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. – Matthew 2:13-15.

Herod’s Slaughter of Male Babies

Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. – Matthew 2:16-18.

Jesus’ Hometown

But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee: And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene. – Matthew 2:22-23.

Jesus’ Move to Capernaum After John The Baptist Was Imprisoned

And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. – Matthew 4:13-16.

Jesus’ Miracles

When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. – Matthew 8:16-17.

And these are just a few of the many examples where Jesus’ life and actions fulfilled Old Testament prophecy. So that still leaves the question of when “all” was fulfilled. That answer is found in John Chapter 19, on the cross:

After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. – John 19:28-30.

It was at this moment on the cross that all was fulfilled. And after fulfilling a final prophecy, Jesus announced “It is finished.” All had been fulfilled and accomplished in Him. And thus as Scripture properly details, the Mosaic law “vanished” away as the New Covenant was established with the death and shed blood of Christ.
“So if we are not under ANY of the Ten Commandments, Christians can just sin as much as they want not? Anything goes? Murder?”

The obvious answer to this question is no. Christians are not free to sin willy nilly. The Ten Commandments of the Old Covenant, written in stone, have been replaced by The Holy Spirit. This again was confirmed by The Lord in Jeremiah 31:

But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. – Jeremiah 31:33.

The Holy Spirit indwells a Christian at the moment of salvation. Jesus proclaimed this in John chapter 16:

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. – John 16:7-14.

The Holy Spirit reproves the world of sin. It can convict a Christian to know they are in sin in their heart. And the new born spirit God has given to the Christian bears witness of this. Christians do NOT need the Ten Commandments read to them every morning to know that stealing or adultery is wrong. They know it in their hearts because God has now put His law into the hearts of all who believe. This is a supernatural change that takes place. A Christian has a desire to please God and in their sinful failures, despises their sin in shame and repents.

In Ephesians 4, Paul says the unbelievers in their vanity, have no such relationship with God and no understanding of their sin.

the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

But to Christians he says:

That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. ….Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. – Ephesians 4.

The new spirit of the born again Christian knows God’s Word and seeks to please God. That is the centrality of the Christian life. A Christians knows murder is wrong, racism is evil and that being a respecter of persons is wrong. And notice as Paul tells Christians not to lie or sin, he adds: “grieve not the Holy Spirit” – which is what a Christian does when in sin.

So rather than have a license to sin, a Christian should know much better than any unbeliever what is sinful and offensive to God. And of course studying The Word, prayer and living an active and devoted Christian life will only feed the spirit that much more and make understanding God’s desires that much easier.

“Didn’t Jesus Say ‘If you love me, obey my commandments’?”

Yes, Jesus said this. But the question is, what are His commandments? Scripture tells us:

Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. – Matthew 22:35-40.

Notice Jesus answered the question with two commandments that are not in the Ten Commandments! Again, Jesus was displaying the superiority of His better covenant. And with it, were His two commandments for all Christians.

Jesus says “if you love me, keep my commandments” in John 14 He elaborates on the commandment:

If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. – John 15:10-12.

“ These things I command you, that ye love one another.” – John 15:17.

Jesus’ commandments are straightforward: love God and love your neighbor. When we believe in Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, we show our love. When we pray and worship Christ, repent of our sins and live for Him, we are showing our love. When we are caring, compassionate and forgiving to others, we are showing them love.

The Apostle John confirms the commandments of Jesus 1 John 3:

And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. – 1 John 3:22-24.

If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. – James 2:8-10.

Notice James contrasts the commandments of Christ with the Mosaic law. In loving people, we are not going to show favoritism, be racist, steal from them, harm them or other sinful activities. Love encompasses moral treatment of others and goes beyond that. These are the commandments of Jesus Christ and a Christian should indeed keep them.

What about the grafting in of Gentiles do we not become part of the House of Israel?
Is not the wild Olive tree (gentiles) Romans 11

We are not saved by the Law but if we love God should we not try and keep his commandments because we love Him? They are instructions and tutor, after all Jesus and His Apostles did these and when it comes to the fulfilling of all the laws and prophets then no He has not fulfilled ALL those that pertain to Him as there are many that Will be fulfilled. Example Eze 36:23-38 , Jeremiah 31

[Rev 14:12 KJV] 12 Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

    Isa 56:6 KJV] 6 Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant;

    [Deu 7:9 KJV] 9 Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he [is] God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;

[1Jo 5:2-3 KJV] 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

[2Jo 1:6 KJV] 6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

[1Jo 5:2-3 KJV] 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

      brother.
God composes of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All forming 1 entity which is God. Father is the head, Jesus being the Son is the Words of the Father and Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Father/Son. All makes God (god is a title not a name).
God gave commandments to Israelites, Gentiles did not have to follow it.
As BeginningandEnd said, the main commandments are the 10 Commandments but the various laws such as moral and ritual cleansing are follow-ups to the 10 commandments. For an example you need to be clean, if you touch blood, emission from bed or skin disease it will make you unclean. And Sabbath day is a day to be kept holy. So if you are unclean, how can you keep the Sabbath holy? You will be cut off from the people for 7 days. All commandments to the Israelites required too much work and that was why non one could do it all.

Jesus did fulfil all 10 commandments. Number 1 commandment which is to love God with all your mind, heart and strength, he did. Because he always prayed and believed in his Father. No one in the past and not even now can love God (Father) with our mind, heart and strength.
The only way we can love God with all our hearts, mind and strength is by only believing in Jesus Christ in all things and situations.

You have to know that when we say God, we are referring to Father/Jesus/Holy Spirit. They are 1 God. So the commandments of God is ‘believe in Jesus and love everyone’. Father’s commandment to Moses were ONLY for the Israelites. If they were for everyone then the Romans would worship God.
Jesus’s commandment which is same as Father is for everyone both Jews and Gentiles. It is a new Covenant, the old is past.

The thing was the old commandments required too much work while the new commandments is so easy. Jesus did say “come onto me all who are heavy laden and burden for I will give you rest, my yoke is light and not burdensome”. If Jesus said his yoke is light and not burden, it makes sense why we only need to follow 2 commandments to get to heaven.

Isaiah 56 you quoted was from Old testament aka Old Law. Again what did Jesus do? He saved lives and preached the Gospel on Sabbath day. What did he say? man for sabbath NOT sabbath for man. If it’s sabbath for man therefore it means we ALL have to rest and must rest. But read Hebrews 4 again. God said “they will not enter my rest”, because the Jews angered God in the desert.
Jesus said come onto me and have a rest, we all have our sabbath/7 day rest in Jesus Christ.
Please read Hebrews 4 again carefully.
Also brother how can you rest on Sabbath day when we don’t even know which exact day is Sabbath? is it Monday? Sunday or Saturday? We don’t know for many people come up with different dates.

Deu 7, again God is both Father and Son and Holy Spirit. Old law was only for Jews. That is why Jews right now believe in Judaism. If you go to Jerusalem and talk about Jesus resurrection to them, they will rebuke you and attack you. Because they want to follow the law, they want to do works and strive! They think they will get to heaven by doing what old law says.
      John 5:39 (ESV)
“39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,”

1 John 5. Exactly, his commandments are not grievous! They are easy, believe in Jesus and love your neighbour. Please read 1 John 3:22-24.
If you understand what the will of Jesus and Father is, you will know what God’s commandments are.

2 John which is believe in Jesus Christ and love everyone!

congratulations, we are no longer under the Law. You are free! You are under Grace, saved by Faith!
As Habbakkuk says “the just shall live by faith”, not by law.

You are most definitely misquoting The Word of the Most High, you say above man for the Sabbath not the Sabbath for man and that is dead wrong. The Sabbath was made for man. That day was blessed and made Holy. How far off of The word you are if you can be wrong in this one point then your whole message is wrong. You twist and turn the very word of our Lord to reach itching ears. There is no covenant made with any group of people EXCEPT Israel and the house of Judah. No covenant made with Gentiles whatsoever anywhere any time. If you want salvation it comes from firmly uniting yourself under that provision. Gods covenant with Israel. The 10 commandments never ever saved anyone, they were and still are guidelines how The Most High wishes us to revere him and our fellow man, that is all. If you wish to attain to the coming kingdom you MUST, LOVE WALK REVERE OBEY and SERVE, as Yeshua himself said. Who are those that are my brothers and sisters save those who obey the commandments of my FATHER. You may confess with your mouth but if you do not obey then you are not one of his and have NOT the Holy Spirit in you, plain and simple. You cannot continue a life of sin and disobedience to the commands of our Lord and think you are safe. Sorry you are preaching a false message to the detriment of all those who do not see what you are saying as folly. There is no greater sacrifice that can be achieved than OUR LORD and savior Yeshua that is pure fact. One cannot follow if he is not tied to the lifeline of Israel’s covenant.

      Hi Forfreedom,

Thank you for your comments. We are absolutely grafted into the natural branches of israel. I agree. But those who are of faith are Abraham´s seed.

Re: Jesus fulfilling the law – Jesus The Lord did indeed fulfill the law by fulfilling every Messianic prophecy. This was done on the cross and is stated in John 19. This does not mean that every prophecy in the Old Testament was fulfilled. There is a big difference. But the whole purpose of the law was to point all people to the Savior and Christ fully earned that title on Calvary. You will not find any prophecies which identify the Messian in the Old Testament which Jesus did not fulfill.

As for following “the commandments”, this is addressed in detail in the article under the last section titled: “questions.” Please see there for an explanation of what the commandments of Jesus Christ are. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. God bless you abundantly. -B&E

          Hi Truthy,

I will only respond to your charge with God’s Word:

And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them: 10 Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway. 11 I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.
12 Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness? 13 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:
14 If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.

15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? 16 For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.
          17

          NICELY written!
Now you are digging deep into the Bible, rather than making another MONSTER drink is a 666 or every new president is the Antichrist.

Well written, a lot of stuff i had in mind you put down. In fact you even taught me new things about Moses law sign was the Sabbath just like how Abraham’s covenant with God was circumcision.

          but you said this
“When we pray and worship Christ, repent of our sins and live for Him, we are showing our love.”
If Jesus already paid for out sins, why do we need to repent? All we need to do is give thanks for what Jesus had done for us and paid for out sins. We don’t need to make it a big deal when we pray and acknowledge our sins.

nicely written. Hopefully people who don’t understand we are not under the law will read this and come to their senses.

          a question:
are we Holy or do we need to be Holy?

          • Beginning and End says

            October 12, 2013 at 5:53 am

            Hi Xino,

Thanks for the comments. Praise God that the article was a blessing to you. As for your questions: “are we Holy or do we need to be Holy?”, the answer is BOTH. This paradox is explained clearly in the book of 1 John:

He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. – 1 John 3:8-9.

This is consdiered a very troubling passage for some. If someone sins, they are of Satabn- Scripture is clear. But then right after, the Holy Spirit says through John that if we are born of God, we never and in fact, cannot sin. So what does this mean? How can a born again Christian still sin? The answer is that while we are still here on Earth, we are only not yet glorified. A born again believer´s spirit is reborn at the time of belief. That spirit is born of God. However, we are still housed in our flesh bodies, which were made in the image of Adam and bear our sin nature. So we have both Holiness directly born of God in us and unholiness, of worldly, sinful flesh as well. And thus a Christian is in a constant battle to be “spirit-led” and follow God and Biblical living in everything we do, while our sinful flesh tempts us to follow the wiles of the Devil and his emmisaries.

The Apostle Paul wrote about this battle in Galatians:

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. -Galatians 5:16-17.

This is written to born again believers. We are to walk in Spirit and deny our flesh. And they are clearly at war with each other.

Finally, our Lord Jesus Christ also pointed this out:

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.-Matthew 26:41.

So a Christian can and will sin again after being saved. And though Christ died for our sins we have every obligation and duty to despise our shame and repent to our Father in Heaven. We are not repenting for our salvation. We are repenting because we have grived the Spirit, dissapointed God and violated His Holy Word. When you have a love for God, those facts should motivate one to always seek forgiveness for our sins. So I urge you to repent for any sins you commit right away. I do it for my many sins all the time. God bless.

“So we have both Holiness directly born of God in us and unholiness, of worldly, sinful flesh as well. ”
That is contradictory. It means we are neither holy nor unholy.
But can you should me a bible verse that says we must repent?

to me, we are already holy.

“Holiness directly born of God in us and unholiness, of worldly, sinful flesh as well. ”
the question is: what is holiness? what holiness of God are you talking about?

“So a Christian can and will sin again after being saved. ”
so why do we have to be Holy if you have “saved?”
This is what I don’t get about people who uses the term saved. They use the term saved yet they still say we require to do more works to be saved. How and why?

“We are repenting because we have grived the Spirit, dissapointed God and violated His Holy Word.”
But didn’t Jesus paid for our sins? so why and how can we still grieve the Holy Spirit?
and what is Holy Word? are you talking about the bible?

Hi Xino, It’s my understanding that once we are born again into salvation, there will be evidence or “fruits” of the spirit. In other words, you cannot achieve your salvation through works but, if there is a true salvation experience, there will also be evidence, or “works” manifested. At first glance, it would appear that James 3:18-26 and Hebrews 11 contradict each other, as the theme of James 3 is “faith without works is dead” and of the Hebrews 11 “Hall of Faith” is “faith, not works”. Once again, B&E has eloquently explained this subject in his article that deals with this subject matter. Bottom line to me is that when a person makes a profession of faith but goes back into the same sinful lifestyle without ever checking up, I would say that person did not get truly born again. Of course, only God Himself can see the heart.

                Hi Xino,

There are two questions you need to ask: 1) are you a born again Christian? 2) Do you still sin?

If the answer to both of those questions is yes, you need to explain how that is possible.

                  @Beginning and End
Yes I’m a Born Again Christians and yes I do sin.
But I don’t need to be Holy.

                  I ask you these questions:
                  1) As Jesus done everyone on the cross? yes
                  2) if he has done it all, do we need to be holy? if you say no
NO) if we need to be holy then it means Jesus hasn’t done it all on the cross!
YES) then it means we are holy both sanctified and justified

We have a spirit called ‘HOLY’ Spirit. God is pure, whatever he touches or dwells upon makes that person or place holy. So if the Holy Spirit dwells in us it makes us holy both sanctified and justified.

                  More logical questions:
                  i) Can you get to heaven by yourself? no
ii) Can you gain eternal life by yourself? no
iii) Can your sins be pardoned by yourself? no
iv) Can we be justified or rightoues? no
                  v) Can you be holy? no

It is by Jesus Christ that we can get to Heaven, have eternal life, have our sins forgiven, be justified and made right before God and also to be Holy!
We need to stop trying to do works by our hands, we need to always commit everything to Jesus Christ.

Trying to be holy is the same as trying to follow and keep all commandments and laws.
Just pointing this out since many people have this wrong and always believe we need to be holy.

Hi I have read your article and can see that you are clearly misleading people with your interpretation, however I am curious to know how is it possible to be a” non sinner” in christ, and still have to repent when you have sinned? Furthermore what defines sin, in other words how will you know sin if you ignore Gods law?

                Hi Tony,

Thanks for your comments. Rather than say “you’re misleading people” with no explanation, why not use this as a chance to edify the body of Christ?

Here is the passage in question:

“He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. – 1 John 3:8-9.”

Please provide your Biblical interpretation and I’d be glad to read it. We are always open to sound, Biblical correction. If there are other parts of the article you find misleading or deceptive, please identify them and feel free to share what you feel is the correct interpretation. Thanks and God bless.

Church Replaced Israel – True or False? Churches mixing with kingdom teaching that pertains to Israel is not new. Yet, many sincere Christians are ignorant as to the hidden danger when the two are mixed together. Example: The Church at Galatia was bewitched while the Church at Corinth was bewildered. Therefore, it is vitally important that we understand the basic message of the Book of Acts.

The Book of Acts could well be called the Acts of the Holy Spirit. But it is important to note the progress in experience as the book moves from Jewish ground to Church ground.
Acts 2:38 – Peter tells Jews to be baptized to receive the Holy Spirit.
Acts 8:14-15 – Peter prays for the Samaritans and lays hands on them, and they receive the gift of the Spirit.
Acts 10:44 – The Holy Spirit comes on the Gentiles when they believe, and Peter can only stand by in amazement and eventually steps aside altogether.

In chapters 1 through 7, we are definitely on Jewish ground. Their ministry (the apostles) was to begin in Jerusalem. Even when you get to chapter 8, you find the apostles courageously remaining in Jerusalem while others were fleeing. Here are but a few of the many evidences in Acts 1 through 7 that though the church, the body of Christ began at Pentecost, she did not enter into her New Testament role at Pentecost. Instead, we find that at that time (Day of Pentecost) the apostles ministry was specifically to the Jews (the nation Israel) and involved the message of the kingdom (Jesus Christ personally ruling and reigning hear on earth).

The disciples expected the kingdom of God: When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? Acts 1:6. Christ did not rebuke them for asking this question concerning the kingdom. Actually, in Matthew 19:28, Christ had promised the apostles that they would sit on twelve thrones (a direct reference to the millennial kingdom where the apostles will judge Israel). Therefore, the apostles acted quickly to appoint another apostle to replace Judas (Acts 1:22) anticipating the return of Christ to restore the kingdom to Israel. The apostle Paul was not the apostle that replaced Judas. Paul’s ministry was to the Church not the Kingdom.
Peter preached to the men of Judah, and Jerusalem in his message at Pentecost. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem…Acts 1:14. Peter did not address his words to Gentiles. It is interesting to note that Pentecost is a Jewish feast (see Leviticus 23:15-22). This particular Pentecost was a renewed hope in the literal kingdom on earth. They expected it!
The prophecy of Joel (see Acts 2:16) relates to Israel in kingdom context (read Joel 2:18:32), not the Church. When Peter quoted Joel, he quoted kingdom language. Note the evidence of the out pouring of the Spirit of God in Joel: And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophecy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. 2:28. Prophecy, dreams, visions, all of which are consistent with Israel in Old Testament experience and will once again be experienced during the millennial kingdom of Christ.
Church and Israel – The Contrast

Contrast Peter’s quote of Joel 2:28 with what Paul teaches the church concerning the filling and the fruit of the Holy Spirit (see Galatians 5:22,23). The major difference in which the Holy Spirit will work according to Acts 2:16 in light of Joel 2:28: the Holy Spirit will come upon (outwardly) all flesh. This is the way the Holy Spirit worked in the Old Testament and will again according to Joel 2:28. Today, the Holy Spirit works inwardly: And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; Even the Spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. John 14:16-17.

With Israel, the Holy Spirit works outwardly. With the Church, the Holy Spirit works inwardly. In his address at Pentecost, Peter spoke with outward evidences of the Holy Spirit (see Acts 2:1-4). The Holy Spirit literally came upon (outwardly) their flesh. The point is this: In Acts 2, the Holy Spirit is working outwardly with Israel and not the church. It is not until we get to Acts 13 that we begin to see the Holy Spirit working inwardly in the Church. Not to distinguish this major difference in which the Holy Spirit works will cause confusion in churches.

The Kingdom emphasis in the first seven chapters of Acts must be seen, otherwise you might apply to the Church today practices and verses that really do not apply. For example, many Churches refer back to Pentecost (a Jewish feast) for their spiritual gifts; but in light of the above analysis, Pentecost gave signs for the Jews in reference to the offer of the Kingdom. Some who hold to baptismal regeneration point to Acts 2:38 in support of their doctrine on baptism, not realizing that this practice and formula applied only to the Jews. Jews are always identified as a nation (Israel) unto God, therefore requiring outward identification such as: the baptism of John, and circumcision. See Matthew 3:11 and note the baptism that John preached. John’s instruction to be baptized was specifically to the Jews and was not a Christian baptism. At this point, Christ had not died and resurrected. Therefore, John’s baptism was not a baptism related to the Gospel, but the kingdom (note verse 2 of chapter 3). John’s baptism was equivalent to Old Testament offerings (washings) that reflected a cleansing of both personal and national repentance. The severe dealing of Peter with Ananias and his wife (Acts 5) illustrate the judgment of sin during the Kingdom age (yet to come). Christ will rule and reign with a rod of iron. Acts 5 is not a rule for church discipline!

We are NOT to teach the experiences of Acts chapters 1 through 7 as a pattern for the Church. We are to experience the teachings of the Epistles of which all were written during the events of Acts chapters 13 to 28.

Neither Acts 2:38 nor 8:14-15 is the pattern for today. It is Acts 10:44 that we experience and teach today: While Peter yet spake these words (the Gospel), the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. Hear the Word, Believe the Word, Receive the Holy Spirit and then be baptized!

Before we move on, it is important to once again note that all of the epistles (with the possible exception of James) was written during the experiences of Acts chapter 13 and on. Everything about the epistle of James suggest that it was one of the first New Testament books written. It was addressed to the 12 scattered tribes. It was written when the church was still primarily Jewish. Its many allusions to Christ” teachings, but independent from the gospels, favor a very early date. Its emphasis on the Lord’s return (while omitting other doctrines concerning Christ) also implies an early date. The simple church structure described in James supports its probable antiquity. For example, bishops and deacons are not mentioned, only elders, who were part of the pre-church, Jewish structure. James worked in like mind with the apostle Peter (Acts 1-8). Like Peter, James eventually came off the scene.

                    Hi Rolande,

Thanks for your comments. Respectfully, I disagree with your description of Peter’s intent. You wrote:

“We are NOT to teach the experiences of Acts chapters 1 through 7 as a pattern for the Church.

Hear the Word, Believe the Word, Receive the Holy Spirit and then be baptized!”

Here is what Peter said to Cornelius, a Gentile, in Acts 10:

“Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: 35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. 36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) 37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: 40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; 41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. 42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. 43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.” – Acts 10:34-43.

Peter says the exact same message he preached in Acts 2 is what he was sharing with Cornelius. The Word that specifically went to Israel, was now being preached to a Gentile. That appears to be the main point of the chapter. So I do not believe the text supports that the words preached in Acts 1-7 have no applicability to the Church. God bless. -B&E

            I highly disagree.
I am a Jew who thankfully believes in Jesus, it’s hurtful to hear all of this.
So your saying that if you believe in Jesus you can still lie, steel, worship other gods, break the sabbath, commit adultery, curse, and all those things. And you don’t have to apologize to God because Jesus already forgave us, we just thank him and keep on. It is hard for me being Jewish coming to faith and hearing all this. Tell me, if you are new testament freaks what does this mean,

Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law” (John7:19)

Matthew 5:17-19New King James Version (NKJV)
17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

What do I do, I’m struggling with my faith? Do Christians dislike us Jews too? I decided to Follow Jesus, not Christianity. Does Jesus want us to ask forgivness.? What I heard was that we need not to sacrifice for our sins because Jesus was a sacrifice. But I still feel that God can be hurt by us, and we need to ask forgiveness, and remind Him of Jesus. Just like apologizing to loved ones.

              yes.
it would be hard for you, because you are a JEW!
the law is embedded into your blood and you cannot live without the law.

this is what you fail to understand about Grace of Jesus Christ.
Law brings sin, sin brings death!

In Abraham’s time, there was no law yet people did all kinds of things, how come God did not punish them? (as in the selected people, the blood line of Israel/Abraham etc)

brother….tell me anyone who God spoke to in the bible and God pointed out the sins he did. Please name me just one!!!

              Law brings death.
if you are a Born Again Christian, you do not live under law but under Grace.

Paul in 1 Corin 12 says “whoever has the Holy Spirit cannot say ‘Jesus be cursed'”.
The same way, when you are Born Again, you cannot do evil things or sinful things/ iniquities.
              Because you hate it!

So when people use excuse such as “oh you believe in Jesus, he has forgiven you of all your sins so does that mean you can sin all you want?”.
Those are people who speak out of lack of knowledge! They are the ones who are still in this world and don’t know what Grace of Jesus Christ is.

John 7:19 you quoted was OUT OF CONTEXT!
Jesus was talking to the pharisees!

Jesus even broke the law, even people who got healing from Jesus broke the law just to get healing.
You will never understand because the law is in you!
you have to eliminate the law from your soul in order to enter the light of Grace!

Matt 5 is always quoted by many Christians who lack the knowledge of that verse!
              Jesus meant:

He did not come against the law, to break the law or to destroy the law.
he came to fulfill it because no one could fulfill all the law!
Israelite always failed to meet the law.
What about that rich young man who said to Jesus he had been following all the law since he was a child?
he THOUGHT he was following all the law but he was deceived.
Jesus showed him he failed the no 1 law which is “love your God with all your heart, mind and soul”. But the rich man’s god was actually mammoth/money.

No one in Israel could love God with all heart, mind and soul. Only Jesus did!
That was how he was praying all the time, constantly, day and night.

When Jesus said, even if heaven and earth pass away, not one ink will be missing from the law.
That is talking about when he will finish everything at the cross.
Jesus was just saying that no matter what he will and must fulfill the law even if the world is going to end. And he did, and cried out IT IS FINISHED!

The least or some of the commandments, does not matter. As long as you LOVE everyone, you automatically fulfill all law/commandment! It is that simply.

              Brother…God is NOT a man!
Man requires apology all the time, we get hurt easily, even with small fraction.
In a crowded train, if someone steps on your foot without acknowledging or saying sorry, we get upset about it, some even lose control and start a fight. We are flawed humans. But God is not like that.
Many people will say “so many people sinning in this world, making Jesus cry”. What LIES!
Who said he was crying? Jesus has done it all on the cross.

Brother, you really need to read what Paul wrote about Grace.
What Jesus blood has done on the cross for us.
And you need to know what RIGHTEOUSNESS means!

it is funny how God chose Israel as the starting, foreshadow people. And now it is actually us Gentiles who know more about Jesus, Father’s love and his Grace more than Jews!

              once again brother:
the Law brings Death! not life!

Wrong Wrong Wrong , I cannot believe how many mistakes you make in trying to quote our Lord. He actually said and you leave out that not one jot or one tittle will change In the law until Heaven and Earth pass away. Has that happened yet ? Most assuredly it has not. Why do you still kick against the goad, believe in our Lord Yeshua as he died for our sins and those are what were done away with at the cross and will be remembered no more those are the accusations that are against us. The 10 commandments were never against us how foolish, the Law is good it shows us rightful living. Gentiles you say know more about Yeshua how wrong you are continually, oh my Lord you are a messenger of Satan may the Lord rebuke you. We as Gentiles are grafted in to the Olive tree, know that it is not the branches which keep the root, but the root that keeps the branches. YOU need to read and ask the Holy Spirit to purge you of all iniquity and be filled with the understanding of OUR LORD. You have insulted our Brother in the Lord and have become a stumbling block for many who follow what you say. The Law was greatly in effect before it was giving by Moses how else did Abraham obey it and Noah and Cain and Abel bring offerings if there was no law. Israel had been in Egypt so long they had forgotten all of them given to their Fathers, if there was no Law how did Joseph know it was wrong to sleep with his masters wife and that it would be a sin against his God. Cain knew it was wrong to kill his brother, you are way off the path and cannot see it yourself. I will say to you the same thing that Michael said to Lucifer without bringing a scathing remark May the Lord rebuke you and show you your errors.

Are Christians Under Law & Grace?

Are Christians under the law? And if so, which law? The apostles taught that though we are saved by grace through faith without works (Rom. 3:20; 28; Eph. 2:7-10) we are also saved unto works (Eph 2:7,10). Jesus Christ as Savior is at the heart of this matter… as He alone makes the case for grace.

While it is true that Christian are not under the Mosaic law, we are not free from all law. Christians live according to a new law. The following four laws are inseparable and form the basis for Christians to be fruitful for the glory of God.

It is the law of the Spirit (Romans 8:2), because the Holy Spirit leads and empowers us to obey God. Simply put… You can’t obey God without God.
It is the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2), because Christ is our example. Simply put… Without Christ we can do nothing that is pleasing to God.
It is the law of liberty (James 1:25), not because we are free to do as we please… but because our condemnation was imputed to Christ and His righteousness was imputed to us. Simply put… The law of liberty is not a license to sin… it is now our nature to obey.
It is the royal law (James 2:8), because the sum of the law is to love my neighbor as myself.
                Why Grace vs. the Law?

Why is it not necessary to be under the Mosaic Law?

The answer is quite simple. Once a sinner receives Jesus Christ as their personal savior; The righteousness of Christ is instantly and forever imputed to the sinner. Secondly, the righteousness of Christ is imparted to the new believer. What does this mean?

The Imputation of Christ’s righteousness ends the law of condemnation. (Romans 8:1,4)
The Impartation of Christ’s righteousness empowers us to live godly in this present world (Romans 7:5,6).

You see, it is not the Ten Commandments that save… it is the Tender Commander that saves. We are not led by the letter of the law, but by a better law (Hebrews 8).

Justification is that act whereby God declares a believing sinner righteous solely on the basis of Christ crucified. Why? Sinners and Christians have no ability to atone for their sin. This requires a perfect sacrifice by someone who is perfect, namely, Jesus Christ. God is holy, thus, requiring judgment for sin. Christ Jesus became our substitute. He bore God’s judgment that was due us.

Justification of a sinner is based squarely on Christ crucified, thus, God is satisfied in declaring the believing sinner righteous. Salvation cannot be achieved, only received. Simply Put; Salvation Is: Christ crucified – God satisfied – The Believer justified (period).

In summary. Justification is by faith… not faithfulness.

(1 John 4:1) Do not believe everything in what others say, for the Word of Elohim (G-d) does not change yesterday, today, or tomorrow. (Hebrews 13:8, John 1:14- Yeshua/Jesus is the Word)

The doctrine that Yeshua (Jesus) was sent to abolish the Law is confusing, when one considers that it directly violates His own Words. Scripture never prophesied that the Torah consisting of the Adamic, Noachide, and Mosaic covenants or the Prophets would be abolished, and there are numerous prophecies to the contrary (e.g., Malachi 3:6, Jeremiah 31:36, Matthew 5:17-19, and others). The covenants do not simply go away, but rather they build on top of one another.

The Apostle Peter (Kefa) warned us that Shaul’s (Paul) writings were difficult to understand; and that there was a group of believers in his day who misused Shaul’s writings, in order to justify a Lawless agenda regarding not observing His Feasts, Sabbaths, and commandments:
          15 And think of the long-suffering of our Master as Salvation, as also our beloved brother Shaul wrote to you, according to the wisdom given to him;
16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them concerning these things, in which some things are hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable twist, to their destruction, as also the rest of the Scriptures.
17 Then beloved, you being fore-warned, watch; lest being led by the error of Lawlessness you should fall from your own steadfastness.
          [2nd Peter 3:15-17]

On a side note, if you examine and probe deeper into Scripture, Yeshua, His disciples, and Shaul still adhered to the Sabbaths, Feasts, and commandments throughout the Renewed Covenant.

          Shalom.

            Hoshea 4: 6-10

6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
            Because you have rejected knowledge,
            I also will reject you from being priest for Me;
Because you have forgotten the law of your God,
I also will forget your children.

            7 “The more they increased,
            The more they sinned against Me;
I will change their glory into shame.

            8 They eat up the sin of My people;
They set their heart on their iniquity.

9 And it shall be: like people, like priest.
So I will punish them for their ways,
And reward them for their deeds.

            10 For they shall eat, but not have enough;
            They shall commit harlotry, but not increase;
Because they have ceased obeying the Lord.

            Brother James.
I take it you are an Israelite right? or not.
Because you seem to be following the Law.

not that Jesus said, you cannot find eternal life in the bible but only through him.
I don’t think there is a way to convince you of the truth.
Unless you would want to listen in humbleness.

That is the problem with the bible, people often misuse the bible and the words that everyone gets everything jiggled up and mixed up.

            But a question James.
is Jesus God? (yes or no)

              Xino,

There is a difference between in trying to follow the Law and observing it. Of Course we all cannot follow it completely because we all fall short of the Glory of Elohim and have sinned as mentioned in Romim 3:23. That’s where Yeshua our Mashiach (Messiah) helps pick us up. As a Nazarene Israelite, we ought to do our best while having Yeshua be our Mashiach in our daily lives. We are to imitate Him (and yes, He is Elohim in the flesh) based on 1 Yochanan (John) 2:3-6 (NKJV):
              “The Test of Knowing Him”
3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of Elohim is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

I think you also forgot that Loving God with all your mind, heart and strength and loving your neighbour as yourself compresses all the law into those 2.
Though still we cannot love God with all our heart, mind and strength.

The only way to do so is by always believing in Jesus Christ and loving everyone.
How can you say we should love our neighbour whereas in the law says “eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth?”. How can we love a neighbour if he touches dead body, blood, emission and remains unclean; yet bible says we should cut them off.
Why do you think Jesus said “we are already clean by his word?”
why does psalm 119:9 says how can a man keep his way pure?
and why does ephesians 5:26 says we make her clean and holy by the washing of the word?

The old covenant is obsolete and now we are in the new covenant. If we are to follow Jesus we are to obey what he does and he did not operate under the law for we are under his grace.

                Ok a question brother James.
if I don’t follow God’s commandments (old laws), will I make it to Heaven or not?

                  Xino,

I am not here to give a dissertation on every question you have. If you are really that inquisitive, fast and pray as Yeshua has taught in Mattityahu/Matthew 6: 5-18. Through the process, Elohim will reveal to you His Divine Truth on your questions. It will manifest as mentioned in Yoel/Joel 2:12-13. Please humble yourself and carefully listen to Him. The constant degradation that you show towards His Word/Torah/Law is uncalled for (Titos/Titus 3:9-11).

In addition, did you know there are well over 1,000 commandments in the Renewed Covenant? So you really think there were just the two Yeshua promoted? There are a lot more than that. Just refer back to my previous post the reason why we ought to imitate Yeshua to the best of our ability while having Him as our Mashiach/Messiah. A few relate to Yeshua admonishing us to be:
                  1.Be exceedingly glad (Mattityahu/Matthew 5:12)
                  2.Be reconciled to a brother (Mattityahu/Matthew 5:24)
                  3.Be perfect (Mattityahu/Matthew 5:48; Qorintim Bet/2 Corinthians 13:11)
                  4.Be wise as serpents (Mattityahu/Matthew 10:16)
                  5.Be harmless as doves (Mattityahu/Matthew 10:16)
                  6.Be ready for Christ’s coming Mattityahu/Matthew 24:44; Luqas/Luke 12:40)
                  7.Be content with your wages (Luqas/Luke 3:14)
                  8.Be merciful as Elohim (Luqas/Luke 6:36)
                  9.Be like faithful servants (Luqas/Luke 12:36)
This is just the tip of the iceberg. This is why the covenants build on each other and are not done away with.

You are on your way to heaven as you accept Yeshua in your heart and try your best to live a sinless life. As previously mentioned in an earlier post, He picks us up when we fall. Just keep striving even when the going gets tough.

Just a tip, next time you post, back it up with Scripture so we can teach each other. Without backing one’s own opinions up without His Word is useless. Please don’t be a fool in regards to Elohim’s Word (Mishlei/Proverbs 12:15, 15:5, 23:9).

I love you Brother and hope and pray that you will understand one day that Yahweh/Yeshua/The Word does not change (Ivrim/Hebrews 13:8)! May Yahweh bless you, keep you, and guide you on your spiritual walk.

One more thing, you can find useful information at nazareneisrael(dot)org if the Ruach HaKodesh/Holy Spirit guides you.

                  Shalom.

            James,

I noted that you quoted Jeremiah 31:36, but I believe that according to the recommendations of Peter that not only the scriptures written by Paul need to be carefully understood to avoid corruption or self-destruction, but also the Old Testament/Old Covenant scriptures also. For instance, only looking at Jeremiah 31:36 “If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD then the seed of Israel also shall cease to be a nation before me for ever (KJV)” without reading the preceding passages would lead one to believe that GOD was referring to the Old Covenant/Ten Commandments. But starting just a few verses earlier, you can see that starting in Jeremiah 31:31-36 as follows that he is talking about a New Covenant placed within the believer’s hearts and furthermore the ordinances he references are the ordinances that govern the moon, the stars, and the sun:
31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new convenient with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my my covenant the brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward pars, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God and they shall be my people
34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
35 Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; the LORD of hosts is his name:
36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.

We must read/understand/interpret scripture by scripture which includes using the context that the author (ultimately GOD) intended. He wasn’t saying that the Ten Commandments would not disappear/remain forever, he was saying that if the sun no longer shined during the day or the moon and stars at night then the people of Israel would no longer be a nation. This reference has nothing to do with The Mosaic Law (issued under the prophetic leadership commissioned to Moses during the Exodus)

why are we so concerned that “Christians” are not “under the law?” Yahshua came to fulill the law, not destroy it. There’s not a believer out here that wouldn’t agree with the ten commandments, and at the very least – in their flesh – attempt to obey those statutes – with the exception of the Sabbath. Hmmm. So it’s the Sabbath – that 4th commandment that is the one we should ignore? The more I study the scriptures, and see the times and seasons we are in, the Torah becomes even more important, as does the keeping of the Sabbath and understanding the Feasts. Additionally, doesn’t Lord mean Baal in Hebrew? and the Greek name of Ioesus, Jesus point to Zeus?

Seems to me more than ever we need to know the Name above every name whose blood was shed for the remission of sin, Yahushua. As for me and my house, we’ll serve Yahuwah.

            Hi Samm,

Thanks for your comments. The reason why we are so concerned is because a basic understanding of the law and Gospel is the foundation of Christianity. The whole purpose of the article was to provide a clear teaching, based on Scripture used in context, to explain the purpose of the Abrahamic, Mosaic and New Covenants and their interplay. There is a great deal of confusion and false teachings being put out there today and this was an effort to let the Biblical perspective speak.

As for Jesus fulfilling the law, the meaning of that phrase is explained in detail in the article under the section entitled: “Questions.” I would humbly submit that many, many well-meaning people have misinterpreted that verse.

Re: The Sabbath – The article is clear and it is certainly my belief, that NONE of the ten commandments apply to Christians in the New Covenant. I am not singling out or distinguishing any of the commandments from the other. So I am not sure where your point on the Sabbath comes in. As for keeping the Sabbath, a Christian does this through their faith in Jesus Christ. The Sabbath day itself, was a sign of the old covenant and now the New. It was merely a foreshadow of the rest we receive in Christ, when we rest from our works and put our full faith and trust for salvation in Him (see Hebrews 4 for more on this).

The name of Jesus – Jesus is not a spin on the name of the idol Zeus. I first off challenge you to provide any Biblical linguistic or ancient linguistic scholar who would ever support this notion. The name Zeus is actually in the New Testament, so we can easily know if Jesus’ name is the same:

And they called Barnabas, Jupiter [Ζεύς]; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker. – Acts 14:12.

The name Jupiter is Zeus in Greek (it’s the same deity). And it is spelled Ζεύς. Jesus’ name is from the Greek Iēsous. These have different spellings, roots and meanings in Greek. There is no logical way to connect these two names. Iēsous is a transliteration of the Hebrew Yeshua (He saves). In Latin it is Iesus. Over time, the English letter “I” took on the sound of the French “J” and we have Jesus.

As for the name of God The Father being linked to Baal, this is also a falsehood. The KJV translators followed a code for how to reference The Lord’s name based on the Hebrew phrase being used. Hence, God sometimes being called, God, THE LORD, Lord GOD, etc. They fully respected the different aspects of God in how He chose to describe Himself. What also undermines the “Baal conspiracy” is the clear instruction by Jesus in the New Testament to call God “Father.” This is the clear name of choice for God that Jesus The Messiah chose and instructed all believers to use:

And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. – Luke 11:2.

If there was a big plan to trick Christians into saying the name of Baal, why include a verse like this? Why include the numerous references to God as “Father”? It does not add up at all. Unfortunately, there are many ministries today (i.e., Hebrew Roots and “Sacred Name” movements) spreading these false notions with no substantive sources (or even logical arguments) to support them. The sad thing in these debates is that we are taking our eye off the ball. Rather than focus on what the Bible is actually saying and trying to rightly divide it, we are trying to indict versions of the Bible because of a name conspiracy that never took place. We are planning on addressing some of them directly in the weeks to come.

Finally I’d just add one more thing. Paleo-Hebrew, the Hebrew spoken and written in Biblical times, does not have any vowels. So Jesus’ name would never be spelled “Yahushua”, and the Father’s name would never be spelled “Yahuwah”, just so you know.

Thanks again for your comments. Please feel free to continue sharing your thoughts on this or any other subject. God bless. -B&E

I have to say that this article is written with only a half knowledge of what is grace, law, justification, salvation, righteousness, sin etc.

          “Are Christians Under The Law?”

          Of course NOT!!!

None of God’s saints are under the law!!!

Only law breakers (sinners) are under the law according to the Scripture!!!!!!!!!!!!

“For your sin shall not lord it over you, for you are not under Law, but under grace.” (Rom 6:14)

There it is! We are under the law WHEN sin has dominion over us!!!!!!

And when does sin have dominion over us?

“Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death (under the law), or of obedience (to God’s laws), which leads to righteousness (under grace)?” (Rom 6:16)

So we see that either way there is no life without the law:

“For as many as sinned without Law will also perish without Law. And as many as have sinned within Law shall be judged through Law.” (Rom 2:12).

So we have two ways of life:

One without law – sinners are lost straight away!!! There is no salvation at all in this way of life!!!

One within law – sinners are properly judged. If the sinners accept Jesus’ blood as propitiation for their sins there is salvation!!! If sinners do not accept Jesus, they are condemned!!!

          Why is it so?

“for apart from Law, sin is dead and I was alive apart from Law once, but the commandment came, and sin came alive, and I died.” (Rom 7:8-9).

So the question is, if sin is dead apart from the law and if I am alive apart from the law, do I have a chance of salvation apart from the law?!

“No, not at all. For we have already charged that ALL, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin” (Rom 3:9)!!!!!!!!!!! “For there is no difference, for ALL have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:22-23)!!!!!!!!!!

But, …………………………. “sin is not charged where there is no law” (Rom 5:13).

          Conclusion

So we see that when there is no law sin is not charged YET God has charged ALL under sin. This shows clearly that the Law is still active even NOW as otherwise God cannot charge humanity!!!!!!!!!

The spiritual laws are still valid and active even NOW just as the law of gravitation is valid and active even NOW!

            Hi Nephesh Roi,

I don’t really understand what you’re saying. Is a born again Christian subject to the Mosaic Covenant? I don’t really get your position here.

          • Nephesh roi says

No, I never talked about any Mosaic covenant. I was talking about the spiritual laws of God.

No country or kingdom can exist without laws. Same with the kingdom of God.

Kingdom of God also cannot exist without the “holy”, “just”, “good”(Rom 7:12) and “spiritual”(Rom 7:14) laws.

It is crystal clear that during the Millennial rule of Christ as King of kings, the kingdom of God shall be governed by God’s laws:

“for the Law shall go forth out of Zion, and the Word of Jehovah from Jerusalem” (Micah 4:2 and Isaiah 2:3).

There is no time a kingdom including that of God can exist without laws!

That is why Jesus warns that “a born again Christian” may prophecy, cast out demons, do many works of power in Jesus’ name, but the moment he teaches a “no law” policy he will, in spite of his “born again” nature, will end up outside the kingdom (Mat 7:22-23)!!!

What you failed to understand is that I was trying sincerely to advise you not to become a preacher of “no law” policy because the kingdom of God cannot exist without divine spiritual laws.

Kingdom of God cannot simply afford anarchy!!!

Any “born again” Christian who teaches that the spiritual laws of the kingdom of God is abolished will never enter that kingdom!

              Hi Nephesh Roi,

Thanks for your comments, I would like to reply to one portion:

“No, I never talked about any Mosaic covenant. I was talking about the spiritual laws of God.

No country or kingdom can exist without laws. Same with the kingdom of God. “

Well this article is very, very clearly talking about the vanishing of the Mosaic law. The term “the law” in Scripture repeatedly refers to the Mosaic Covenant. In no part does the article say there are no laws for a born again Christian. So I don’t understand what your point is in relation to what the article says.

Jeremiah 31, which is quoted more than once in the article, says the Lord will write His law on the hearts of those who enter into His New Covenant. I don’t know how much clearer that can be that laws still exist in the New Covenant. They are just not the Mosaic laws, which were a part of a specific covenant that a born again Christian does not enter to or have part with (and in fact can’t have any part with).

“Listen to me, you who know righteousness, the people in whose heart is My Law; do not fear the reproach of men, nor be afraid of their revilings.” (Isaiah 51:7)

                Hi, Beginning and End,

I hope you understand the above quote from Isaiah. Here the Scripture says that the people in whose hearts is God’s Law, they know what is “righteousness”!!!

So in Old Testament or New Testament, “righteousness” has everything to do with GOD’s laws and commandments!

But you, in your eagerness for lawlessness, confuse between God’s law, Mosaic law, God’s covenant and Mosaic covenant etc etc.

Here, the billion dollar question is, what is meant by God’s Law (“My Law”)!

I know that you have talked about some vague laws in the New Covenant. But I am talking about the specific laws or commandments that is called as God’s laws NOT Moses’ laws or commandments!

Again you forget that in Jeremiah 31, God talks about “His” Law will be written in the hearts. God is NOT talking about some vague laws. He is talking about the specific law that was a part of the first covenant but repeatedly broken by the house of Israel and house of Judah!!!

I wonder how you could escape that clear fact yet?!

I would caution that in the Bible God clearly shows that His laws are different from Moses’ laws:

“And I will not again make the feet of Israel wander any more out of the land which I gave their fathers; only if they will be careful to do according to all that I have commanded them, and according to all the Law that My servant Moses commanded them.” (2 King 21:8)

So what exact commandments God gave the Israel directly without the help of Moses as a mediator?!!!

“These commands (the ten commandments) the LORD declared in a loud voice to your entire assembly on the mountain from out of the fire and dark clouds, and NOTHING MORE WAS ADDED. He inscribed them on two tablets of stones and gave them to me (Moses)” (Deut 5:22)

Please note, if you will, that the ten commandments without any addition was the only commands God directly gave the ENTIRE multitudes of Israel at the same time! God wrote these on the tablets!

Moses neither declared the 10 Commandments to Israel nor wrote them on the tablets as you think.

The scenery of lightnings, dark smoke and fire from the furnace on the mountain, the voice of God like thunderings and the fierce trumpet blasts all were too much for the hapless Israelites that they pleaded with Moses to speak to them on befalf of God (Exo 20:18-19)!!!!

So now we see that the ten commandments are God’s laws (“My commandments” or “His Law”).

The ten commandments are NOT any Mosaic law as you project them to be!!!

And it is the same ten commandments that is going to be the integral part of the New Covenant (“My Law in the hearts”)!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you still have doubts about what is God’s Law, see this passage where God calls one of the ten commandments as My law:

“Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not. On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.” (Exo 16:4-5)

Nowhere God says Sabbath, one of the 10C, is Mosaic law or Moses’ law. Not at all, these are God’s very laws which He gave directly to Israel without the advocacy of Moses!!

And when people went out on the seventh day in search of manna, God again asks Moses:

“And the LORD said to Moses, “How long will you refuse to keep My commandments and My laws?” (Exo 16:28)

                Now what is Mosaic law?

These were the civil, religious/ceremonial, political etc statutes God commanded Moses to give to Israel.

For example when Moses separates three cities as refuge for the inadvertent killer, the Bible clearly says thus:

“And this is the Law which Moses set before the sons of Israel” (Deut 4:44).

                Conclusion

So to conclude, you canNOT assume when Jeremiah 31 says “I will write My law in their hearts” that the “My law” refers to some ethereal vague feelings!!!

It refers to specific set of spiritual laws!

P.S.:- You may get a lot of supporters for your “no law” policy. But as Isaiah 51:7 says I do not fear the reproach of men nor am I afraid of their revilings!

                Why?

“Because the wisdom of the flesh is an enemy to God. For it is not subject to the law of God: neither can it be” (Rom 8:7).

Notice Jesus answered the question with two commandments that are not in the Ten Commandments! ………………….. Jesus’ commandments are straightforward: love God and love your neighbor.

                I am shocked!!!

Your understanding on this topic is so shallow!!!

                Please understand this:

These greatest two commandments are NOT in the ten commandments because THESE ARE THE VERY TEN COMMANDMENTS when they are SUMMED UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                Do you have any doubts?!

Please read and study this following Scripture:

“Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves another has fulfilled the Law. For: “Do not commit adultery; do not murder; do not steal; do not bear false witness; do not lust;” and if there is any other commandment, it is ****SUMMED UP**** in this word, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love works no ill to its neighbor, therefore love is the fulfilling of the Law.” (Rom 13:8-10)

I strongly suggest to meditate on this. It is awesome!!!

Apostle Paul very strongly declares that the last 6 of the ten commandments are SUMMED UP as “love your neighbor as yourself”

Then logically it follows that the first 4 of the ten commandments are SUMMED UP as “love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your soul and with all your might”!

Tell me, what commandments Jesus said is the basis of His new covenant except the very ten commandments!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                  Hi Nephesh Roi,

I have followed your comments in this thread and I still honestly have no idea as to what it is you do actually believe. Does a person have to follow the Mosaic law to be saved? If you could share your belief on this question it would be much appreciated to gain a better understanding of where you are coming from. Thanks. -B&E

                    Hi Beginning and End,

Actually it is me who has no idea as to what you do actually believe!!

You say on one hand that we do not need to follow the Mosaic law (meaning the ten commandments).

In the same breath you say on the other hand that Jesus has made the ten commandments more stringent! You gave the example of adultery in mind and hatred in mind!!

So what exactly do you mean?

That we need to avoid mental adultery but can do the physical adultery?!!

That we need to avoid mental hatred but can physically murder a person?!!

I did not get you here!

“Does a person have to follow the Mosaic law to be saved?” – B&E

No, a person does not have to follow the Mosaic law to be saved.

But a person has to keep the spiritual laws of God to be saved!

I know how you have adeptly twisted (without may be knowing) to show that God’s spiritual law is nothing more than ‘Mosaic law”!!!

You asked me to read your article on Matthew 19. I have read it. Again I have seen that you have adeptly twisted the intent of what Jesus said.

In effect, you said: ‘Jesus said to keep the commandments to enter into life BUT Jesus did not mean to keep the commandments to enter into life’!!!

As far as I know, Jesus never said something He did not mean! He was never a double talker!! So in effect you are denying Him!!!
                    *****

“If you could share your belief on this question” – B&E

I think any further discussion on this topic is meaningless unless and until we know for sure the truth of what is sin! We all talk incessantly about sin, sinning, sinners, saved from sin etc.

Could you tell me what is your understanding of sin from the Bible (not your or my idea but the Biblical definition of sin)!

Unless and until we know what is sin, we will not know from exactly what Jesus has saved us! So …….

                    What is sin?!

                      Hi Nephesh Roi,

OK, great. Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question. I think this can be a much productive discussion if we understand each other;’s basic, core beliefs. So I appreciate you taking this timeout just to clarify yours.

So now I will try to clarify mine on this topic for you (and this is just my explanation of my beliefs – I know you do not agree with them). Notice that the title of this article is “Are CHRISTIANS under the law?” If you are unsaved, the law abides over you. You are cursed because you have sinned. And the law applies to you. ” For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.” (romans 7:5).

Once you are a born again believer in Jesus Christ, your spirit, that was subject to the law DIES. In its place, you receive a new spirit, born of God. And thus you are no longer bound to the Old Covenant:

Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? 2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. 4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. – Romans 7:1-4.

Paul, speaking to those who knew and studied and lived the Old Covenant all their lives, specifically says that a Christian is DEAD TO THE LAW. We are “loosed” from it and can now go to the better covenant. The New Covenant of Christ. why? Because we have died and thus the old covenant is annulled.

And thus a Christian is not a part or member of the Old Covenant. They are signatories to the New Covenant which is faith in Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. What has replaced the law written in stone, is the law given by the Holy Spirit in our hearts. That is what reproves us of sin and guides us. Not tablets of stone.

As for sin – it is the transgression of the law. Which law? The law of God written in our hearts. A born again Christian can still sin. But that sin does not bring the punishment of the Mosaic law. The punishment of the Mosaic law is a CURSE. In the New Covenant, Christ took the curse for us so that we would never suffer it. Ever. No matter what.

So those are my beliefs on the subject. So now I would like you to answer my question with respect to your beliefs:

“No, a person does not have to follow the Mosaic law to be saved.

But a person has to keep the spiritual laws of God to be saved!”

What are the spiritual laws of God a person needs to keep to be saved? This is a very important question (in fact it’s the most important question) so if you can, please list the specific laws you are referring to.

Oh and I know you accused me of twisting Scripture a couple of times as well, but it’s pointless for me to respond to remarks like that without a substantive argument. If you just say “you twisted Scripture!” without actually showing the text from the Bible and rightly dividing it for me and all the readers to see, then there is no real point being made. So if you want to just list the passages you are referring to and show us the correct interpretation, I’d be glad to respond.

In fact you will be surprised to know that I agree with most of your beliefs!!! I do not deny the greater need of faith, grace etc.

I did not seem to focus more on the faith because you have focused on it, I would say you have over-focused on faith at the expense of the need of righteousness in our lives!

My difference with you is only on that small aspect of the proper place of God’s law in a Christian’s life. Unfortunately this small aspect happens to be all the more very important considering the great Sacrifice Jesus had to pay for it!
                        ********************

“If you are unsaved, the law abides over you. You are cursed because you have sinned. And the law applies to you.” – B&E

                        We cannot generalise like this.

Suppose there is a non-Israelite gentile person, say for example, a Buddhist. He does not even know that anything like a spiritual law from God even exists! He is indifferent!

So we can say that this Buddhist “was alive apart from Law once” (Rom 7:9). This fact, that he was alive, is because without law sin is not accounted!!!

“but sin is not charged where there is no law” (Rom 5:13) and “for apart from Law, sin is dead” (Rom 7:8).

But the moment God touches his heart through the Gospel, the law through the commandments becomes active and sin is accounted and the Buddhist understands that he is worthy of death!!!

“but the commandment came, and sin came alive, and I died” (Rom 7:9).

(Romans 7:9 proves clearly that the Apostles taught God’s commandments along with the Gospel)!!!

Since through the law and through sin, the Buddhist is “under the law” which means under the custody of law. When he repents of his sins and accepts Jesus’ sacrifice as the remedy of his sins, he is reconciled with God through the blood of Jesus. Then he starts a law abiding (odedient) life in Christ.

In the water baptism he identifies himself with the death of Jesus (Rom 6:3-4) and thus is “dead to the law” which means he escaped from the custody of law!

Thus he is no longer under (the penalty of) the Law!!!

Question — Now, let us think, why does Paul say that one is under the law.

“For we have charged both Jews and Greeks before, all with being under sin” (Rom 3:9). “your sin shall not lord it over you, for you are not under Law, but under grace” (Rom 6:14).

So according to Paul’s definition, you are under the law when you are under sin and when sin has dominion over you! Or in other words, you are under the law when you are a law breaker!

Question — When are we dead to the Law?

“For the one that died (with Christ in baptism; verses 3 and 4) has been justified from sin.” (Rom 6:7). “So also you count yourselves to be truly dead to sin” (verse 11).

So when you are dead to the sin, you are dead to the law, that is, dead to the “wrath” of the Law (Rom 4:15).

Question — When are we free from the law?

“And having been set free from sin” (Rom 6:18). “But now having been set free from sin” (verse 22).

So when we are free from sin, we are free from law, that is, from the custody/penalty of law!

Question — Do phrases like “not under law”, “dead to the law” and “free from law” all mean that we need not follow the law?

                        Not at all!

Paul says that a “born again” Christian need to “be subject to the law of God” (Rom 8:7). He should “delight in the law of God” (Rom 7:22). He should “truly serve the law of God” (Rom 7:25).

“What then? shall we sin, because we are not under law, but under grace? God forbid.” (Rom 6:15).

“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid” (Rom 6:1-2).

“For not the hearers of the Law are just with God, but the doers of the Law shall be justified.” (Rom 2:13).

“For circumcision truly profits if you keep the Law, but if you are a transgressor of the Law, circumcision becomes uncircumcision.” (Rom 2:25).

“Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but obeying God’s commandments is everything.” (1 Cor 7:19).
                        **************************

“And thus you are no longer bound to the Old Covenant:” – B&E

The problem I find with your understanding is that you mistake the covenant for the ten commandments!

Let us look at the Scripture you have provided as example; Romans 7:1-4:

A woman is married to a husband through the law of husband (marriage). This can be compared to the first covenant.

Now she has a choice of marrying another husband when the first one is dead. This can be compared to the second covenant.

Now the most important point comes; if the woman marries the second husband when the first one is alive, she is committing ADULTERY (breaking of ten commandments)!!!!!!!!!!!

So just as the commandment against adultery should be kept in whichever marriage a woman engages in, the ten commandments should be kept in whichever covenant you are engaged in!!!!!!!!!

This is why I am saying that God wrote the same law in our hearts!

So the very Scripture you brought forward as example itself has proved that the ten commandments are different from covenants!
                        *********************

“What has replaced the law written in stone, is the law given by the Holy Spirit in our hearts.” – B&E

                        Wrong, B&E.

The Bible does not say one law is replaced with another law.

On the contrary, the Bible says clearly that God will write in our hearts His law that was written on stone!

There is no one set of law of God the Father, another set of Jesus or yet another of the Holy Spirit!!! The spiritual law is the same.

Apostle Paul identifies which law is written in our hearts:

“In fact, I wouldn’t have become aware of sin if it had not been for the Law. I wouldn’t have known what it means to covet if the Law had not said, “You must not covet.” (Rom 7:7).

Yes, Paul is talking about the ten commandments even in the second covenant!!!

This commandment was to lead us to Life (same as Jesus said in Mat 19):

“And the commandment, which was to LIFE” (Rom 7:10). (But because of our fault the same commandment brought death)!

The ten coammdnments are “holy and just and good” (verse 12).

The ten commandments are “spiritual” (verse 14).

Every true “born again” Christian delight in the ten commandments according to the inward man (verse 22) just like Paul.

Every true “born again” Christian with their minds serve the ten commandments (verse 25) just like Paul.

Look at this powerful quote from Paul to clearly show you that the ten commandments are still valid in the second covenant:

“Then the one teaching another, do you not teach yourself? The one preaching not to steal, do you steal? The one saying not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery? The one detesting the idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in Law, do you dishonor God through transgression of the Law?” (Rom 2:21-23)

                        Truth cannot be clearer!
                        *******************

“Paul, speaking to those who knew and studied and lived the Old Covenant all their lives” – B&E

                        Wrong again, B&E!

Paul is speaking to the GENTILES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have any doubts? Here are the unfailing evidences:

“I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I often planned to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now), so that I might reap a harvest among you, just as I have among the rest of the GENTILES.” (Rom 1:13).

“I am speaking to you GENTILES. Because I am an apostle to the gentiles” (Rom 11:13).

“and YOU, a WILD olive branch, have been grafted in their (Israel’s) place to share the rich root of the olive tree” (Rom 11:17).

“After all, if YOU were cut off from what is naturally a WILD olive tree, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree (i.e., Israel)” (Rom 11:24).

There are many more like this but this is enough for now.

Now tell me, how did the gentiles like Romans know the Law?

                        Did the Apostles teach them?!
                        ***************************

“As for sin – it is the transgression of the law. Which law? The law of God written in our hearts.” – B&E

I completely agree with your understanding of the Biblical definition of sin. So half of my job is done!

The other half job is still pending on “which law”. Well, that law written in our hearts is the spiritual laws condensed into the ten commandments! It cannot be any different law!
                        *****************************

“What are the spiritual laws of God a person needs to keep to be saved? This is a very important question (in fact it’s the most important question) so if you can, please list the specific laws you are referring to.” – B&E

My job is very easy because God Himself has written a list of the specific laws I am referring to!!!

But I will look at it from the New Testament perspective because prophet Isaias prophesied long before that the Messiah when He comes will magnify the Law and make it honorable!!!

“The LORD is well pleased for His righteousness’ sake; He will magnify the law, and make it honourable. ” (Isaiah 42:21).

So let us see the magnified and honorable Law of the Messiah!

But, before we begin, let us heed a warning from the same Messiah:

“Therefore whoever shall relax one of these commandments, the least, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of Heaven. But whoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of Heaven.” (Mat 5:19)

The entire law can be condensed into one word: LOVE!

“Then love is the fulfillment of Law” (Rom 13:10).

This love has two levels; one toward God and one towards fellow humans!

“Jesus said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” (Mat 22:37-40)

This first and great commandment is described further in 4 commandments:

                        One) Creator God is the true God and we shall not have other gods;

                        Two) We shall not make images for worship as this is idolatry;

                        Three) We shall not take God’s name in vain;

Four) We should remember to keep the seventh day Sabbath.

The second great command is further described in 6 commandments:

                        One) Honor our parents so that we have a long life;

                        Two) We shall not kill;

                        Three) We shall not commit adultery;

                        Four) We shall not steal;

                        Five) We shall not bear false witness against other;

Six) We shall not lust after others’ wives and we shall not covet others’ properties.

As Jesus has said, upon these two love commandments that is explained further in ten commandments hang all the principles of righteous life in God.

I will give one example. There is a particular command in the Bible as follows:

“When you build a new house, then you shall make a guard rail for your roof, so that you do not bring blood on your house, if one falls from it.” (Deut 22:8).

The above command can be concluded in the sixth commandment of “you shall not kill”!

(Incidentally, who can say that the Old Testament laws are old and obsolete?! This law regarding the flat roof is still valid today especially when we count the number of children dying after falling from concrete flat roof!)
                        **************************

“Oh and I know you accused me of twisting Scripture a couple of times as well” – B&E

I sincerely apologise if I have hurt your feelings.

I accused you of twisting only on two occasions not a couple of times. First was when I felt you were deliberately confusing God’s 10 C as Mosaic law. Second was regarding your article on Matthew 19 after reading of which I felt you said in effect that Jesus said this but meant something else!

That is not Jesus’ style! He means what He says. He is simple and straight forward.

But Satan is adept in such double talk. For example, he said to our mother Eve, “you shall NOT surely die” but he meant, “you shall surely die”!!!

Well, I haven’t fully covered my convictions but I will cover them as we progress in good spirit.

                          Hi Nephesh Roi,

Finally, we can get down to brass tacks. All I have been trying to figure out in this discussion is what is the Gospel to you. How does one go to Heaven. And I finally have your response, which I submit is NOT THE GOSPEL. You are preaching another Gospel, that is not from Scripture. So let’s examine your explanation in response to what a person has to do to be saved.:

This first and great commandment is described further in 4 commandments: One) Creator God is the true God and we shall not have other gods; Two) We shall not make images for worship as this is idolatry; Three) We shall not take God’s name in vain; Four) We should remember to keep the seventh day Sabbath. The second great command is further described in 6 commandments: One) Honor our parents so that we have a long life; Two) We shall not kill; Three) We shall not commit adultery; Four) We shall not steal; Five) We shall not bear false witness against other; Six) We shall not lust after others’ wives and we shall not covet others’ properties. As Jesus has said, upon these two love commandments that is explained further in ten commandments hang all the principles of righteous life in God. I will give one example. There is a particular command in the Bible as follows: “When you build a new house, then you shall make a guard rail for your roof, so that you do not bring blood on your house, if one falls from it.” (Deut 22:8). The above command can be concluded in the sixth commandment of “you shall not kill”! (Incidentally, who can say that the Old Testament laws are old and obsolete?! This law regarding the flat roof is still valid today especially when we count the number of children dying after falling from concrete flat roof!)

So now, you have said, by your own admission, that we have to keep the law in order to be saved. This is not the Gospel. This is works-based salvation. You write “love God with all your heart and mind” as if it’s some easy task. Loving God with ALL your heart and mind means you never have a sinful feeling or thought. How are you doing with keeping those laws? How many sinful thoughts have you had in the past week? None? Please share with us all, since you must clearly be “keeping the spiritual laws” for your salvation.

And loving your neighbor. Similarly – have you had any bad thoughts about people? Have you been angry with anyone since you have been “saved”? Have you committed any sinful acts in the past year?

Your division of the 10 Commandents into 4 and 6 is your own human-made idea. Nowhere in the Bible are we ever told to divide and group the commandments as you just did. Jesus said all the law AND THE PROPHETS hang on His Two Commandments given to the Church (those who already believe) as stated in Matthew 22. The prophets are the prophetic books of the Old Testament (i.e., Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, etc.). Where do they fit into Jesus two commandments? You left them out of your list and person-made grouping! how do you divide up the books of the prophets when looking at Jesus’ 2 commands?

At the end of the day, nothing you are advocating is found in rightly-divided Scripture. We are never told that we have to keep a law to be saved. We are saved through faith in Christ. Abraham lived before Moses. Way before Him. And how was he saved? We are told in Romans 4:

What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? 2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. 3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. 4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. 6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, 7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. 8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. – Romans 4:1-8.

Abraham BELIEVED and was declared righteous before God. Abraham did not keep any “spiritual laws” for his salvation. And if he tried doing that, he would be boasting foolishly. Verse 4 directly addresses your false doctrine. If we try to work for our salvation, then it is no longer “grace.” Works righteousness inherently means, that we have earned our way to Heaven, so God owes us. Verse 5 is the real Gospel – those who do not work, but believe in Jesus who has the power to save sinners, go to Heaven.

God makes us righteous for salvation, not our own works. You are preaching a FALSE GOSPEL and I wholeheartedly reject it and any works-based salvation doctrine. You are making the same error that the rich man in Matthew 19 did: wondering what “good thing” you can “do” to enter Heaven. I urge you to pray to God for understanding, repent and believe the real Biblical Gospel. The 2 commandments Christ gave were to those who have entered the New Covenant – i.e., those who already believe in Him. The unbelieving world at large is still subject to the Old Covenant law whose purpose is to convict them of their sins that they may look to Christ, believe and enter the New Covenant.

O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? 2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? 4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain. 5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. 7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham – Galatians 3:1-7.

Again, Scripture rebukes you. Paul calls those who preach law-keeping for salvation to those who practice witchcraft. It is GRACE and GRACE alone, through faith in Christ that a person is saved.

Now to address one more point you made:

“I sincerely apologise if I have hurt your feelings.

For example, he said to our mother Eve, “you shall NOT surely die” but he meant, “you shall surely die”!!!”

I have never heard someone refer to “Jesus’ style” but putting that reference aside, you again err, because you do not know the Scriptures. You claim that Jesus is always “simple and straight forward”. Yet Scripture says the exact opposite.

“10 And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable. 11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: 12 That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.” – Mark 4:10-12.

10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? 11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. 12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. 13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. 14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. – Matthew 23:10-15

Does this seem “simple and straightforward” to you? The Lord Jesus Christ purposely spoke in parables as it would make it harder for some to understand. The Rich man was immersed in a false Gospel. Despite growing up learning from the Old Testament, he was spiritually blind. He was standing before God in the flesh, the Messiah, who the entire Old Testament pointed to and did not recognize Him (hence him calling Him “good master” and not worshiping Him as believes in the Gospel do). And when push came to shove, he had more faith in money than God. And Jesus addressed Him accordingly to convict Him of his error and sin.

I hope and pray you understand and start believing the true Biblical Gospel and stop relying on the “good things” and sinless life you have been living to enter Heaven.

“and stop relying on the “good things” and sinless life you have been living to enter Heaven.” —– Beginning and End

My, my! Dear Beginning and End,

Do you know what you are advising me?

You are asking me to lead a sinful life to enter heaven!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Watch your words, B&E, you are propagating a false gospel of lawlessness, something which Jesus is deadly against!!!!!!!!!!!

Jesus came to “redeem us from all lawlessness” (Titus 2:14) and by propagating a lawless life, you “are again crucifying the Son of God and exposing him to public shame” (Heb 6:6)!!!

If you abhor “good things” in your life, it is time to check what spirit you have received because the Bible reminds all Christians to show “good works” in their lives!!!!!!!!!!!

                          Please read the following Scripture:

“They profess that they know God, but in their works they deny Him, being abominable and disobedient and reprobate to every good work.” (Tit 1:16)

No, it is not my idea.

I got it from the following Scripture itself:

“For: “Do not commit adultery; do not murder; do not steal; do not bear false witness; do not lust;” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”” (Rom 13:9)

                          Let us read it carefully.

Here the Apostle Paul is quoting 5 commandments and refers to the sixth one (honor our parents) as any other commandment and concludes that these 6 are “SUMMED UP” as “love your neighbor as yourself”!!!!

How could you say that this is my idea??!!!!!!!!!!!!

“how do you divide up the books of the prophets when looking at Jesus’ 2 commands?” —— B&E

What is wrong with the prophets? Did they preach against these two commandments?!
                          *********************************

“At the end of the day, nothing you are advocating is found in rightly-divided Scripture.” —— B&E

                          Really?

                          What about this:

“For not the hearers of the Law are just with God, but the doers of the Law shall be justified.” (Rom 2:13)
                          *****************************

“Abraham lived before Moses. Way before Him. And how was he saved? We are told in Romans 4:” —- B&E

                          Please note this point:

Romans 4:1-4 does NOT talk about “SAVED”!!!!!!

                          It only talks about JUSTIFICATION!!!!!!!!!

“Salvation” and “justification”, though related, are two different concepts!!!

Salvation is a long process. That is why Jesus said, “those who endures till the end shall be saved“. It is in the future tense!

But justification is a “now” thing; it is in present tense! Justification is a thing done by God alone when we are reconciled with God!

So salvation includes justification because the latter is done at the beginning and then sometimes (whenever we sin) in the long process of salvation!

For example, I was a sinner (ie, lawbreaker). I cannot earn any salvation because I am fit for death only. But God, in His grace, through the blood and death of Jesus forgives my past law-breaking. I am justified NOW in faith of Jesus! I will remain justified as long as I believe and do not break any law. But the moment I break any law, I am a sinner. I repent and am forgiven through the blood of Christ. I am again justified NOW!!!

If you have any doubt about what I said, then please read Paul:

“Much more then, being NOW justified (present tense) by His blood, we SHALL BE saved (future tense) from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, being reconciled (present tense), we SHALL BE saved (future tense) by His life.” (Rom 5:9-10)

Also please carefully note the following:

Justification and reconciliation are through the BLOOD and DEATH of Christ now. (You cannot pay for it. It is FREE. You cannot earn it.)

But salvation is through the LIFE of Christ!!! (This requires an “obedient” life. Again this is not earning but you show fruits through “good works”)

Please do not mix these terms. If you mix, you miss the mark!
                          ****************************

“Abraham did not keep any “spiritual laws” for his salvation.” —— B&E

That is your personal opinion. But God has a different opinion:

“because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My Laws.” (Gen 26:5)
                          **************************************

“So now, you have said, by your own admission, that we have to keep the law in order to be saved. This is not the Gospel. This is works-based salvation.” —- B&E

So according to you salvation is very cheap without any works!

Listen what Apostle James tells you:

“But will you know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?” (James 2:20)

“My brothers, what profit is it if a man says he has faith and does not have works? Can faith save him?” (verse 14)

“You believe that there is one God (this is faith), you do well; even the demons believe and tremble (they have more faith!!!).” (verse 19)

“Even so, if it does not have works, faith is dead, being by itself. But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works”. Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith FROM my works.” (verses 17-18)

“Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Do you see how faith worked with his works, and from the works faith was made complete?” (verses 21-22)

“For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” (verse 26).

So much for the worksless (useless) faith.

“If we try to work for our salvation, then it is no longer “grace.”” —— B&E

Wrong –> We worked for salvation so we received grace. This is wrong. How can we work for salvation when we are already dead in our sins?

Correct –> We received grace freely so we work. This is right. We show our faith is real through our good works. Our works complement our faith.

This is exactly what Paul also teaches us:

We were sinners (law-breakers) and were under the law before. But God called us under His grace and freely justified us through the blood of Jesus. We are no longer under the law.

” What then? shall we sin (ie, break law again), because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.” (Rom 6:15)

“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin (ie, continue breaking law), that grace may abound? God forbid.” (Rom 6:1-2)

So in short we do not work before Grace, but we complement our faith through works AFTER Grace!!!

If faith alone is what required for salvation, then demons will get saved because they have faith in God and they tremble at it (James 2:19).
                          ***************************************

“The unbelieving world at large is still subject to the Old Covenant law” —— B&E

You do not make sense to me because the Bible says that the unbelieving world at large is still NOT subject to the law of God and indeed it cannot be because it is enmity towards God! (Rom 8:7)
                          **************************************

“the Old Covenant law whose purpose is to convict them of their sins that they may look to Christ, believe and enter the New Covenant.
                          O foolish Galatians,” —– B&E

The problem here is that you again mistake the “ten commandments” for the “works of law”!

Just like “justification” and “salvation” are different concepts, the “law of righteousness” and the “works of law” are two different concepts!!! It is Apostle Paul who distinguishes the two; not me!

A sample example: Paul says the ten commandments are SPIRITUAL (Rom 7:14).

But see in the Galatians you quoted Paul says “the works of Law” is “perfection in the FLESH” (Gal 3:2-3)!!!!!!!!!

So what is spiritual canNOT be fleshly!!!!!!!!!!!

                          The ten commandments are spiritual!!!

But the works of Law are fleshly!!!!!!!!!!

So works of Law cannot be the ten commandments!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is exactly this FLESHLY works of Law (and NOT the spiritual 10C) that is “added because of transgressions (ie, spiritual law-breaking)” as a “trainer” until the “Seed Christ should come” given through a “mediator” etc (Gal 3:19, 24)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let us understand the Biblical concepts thoroughly well before propagating lawlessness!
                          **********************************

“The Lord Jesus Christ purposely spoke in parables as it would make it harder for some to understand.” —- B&E

                          Exactly! (I agree with you)

Parables are said to make it harder for understanding.

But what I said is that Jesus is not a double talker. That is, He does not say something and means the exact opposite!

When He says to keep the commandments to enter life, He means exactly that. He does not mean “don’t” keep the commandments to enter life!

                          This is what I said.
                          ***************************

“And when push came to shove, he had more faith in money than God. And Jesus addressed Him accordingly to convict Him of his error and sin.” ——- B&E

                          Exactly!

So you see that the rich man was NOT keeping the commandments in true spirit!! He broke the first two commandments! He placed his wealth “before true God” and he made his wealth as an idol!!!

This is exactly what Jesus convicted him of!

                            Hi Nephesh Roi,

You and I have a completely different approach to Biblical interpretation. “Faith without works is dead” is sadly one of the most misused, out-of-context Scripture references in the church today. That chapter is not about how one is saved. It is an exhortation for Christians, who are ALREADY saved to not show partiality in the church.

But I would like to focus on one point that you seem to keep overlooking every time I post to you. For some reason, whenever I have had discussion with works-righteusness, Hebrew roots, Jehovah’s Witnesses and others who preach salvation by works, this one issue is always ignored:

Since YOU, again, by your own admission, are working for your salvation, please let me know how you were able to do this. Have you sinned at all in this calendar year in thought, word or deed? Have you done any sinful deeds, had immoral desires or thoughts? how many sins have you committed in the past month? I’m assuming from your explanation, the answer is zero, because as you believe in your doctrine, you love God with ALL of your heart and mind. So if you could, just please explain your specific ways of working at your salvation and obeying all of The Lord’s “spiritual laws.”

                          Hi Beginning and End,

Of course we have different approaches to Biblical interpretation as otherwise we will not be discussing anything here. But I have a request to you; please consider what I have presented here with an open mind – impartially (after we finish our discussion) – to see what exactly Paul is saying.

I make this request because I have spent quite some time on this topic and I have read and studied a lot of arguments from both sides. Initially I found both sides making valid arguments because Paul seemed to be confusing as Xino has observed!

But after making an in-depth analysis of all the Biblical points on this topic, I realised that Apostle Paul, just as Apostle Peter warned, is one of the most MISunderstood persons in history!!
                          *********************************

““Faith without works is dead” is sadly one of the most misused, out-of-context Scripture references in the church today. That chapter is not about how one is saved. It is an exhortation for Christians, who are ALREADY saved to not show partiality in the church.” ——- B&E

In one way you are right but with a slight change. “It is an exhortation for Christians, who are ALREADY called to not show partiality in keeping the Royal Law in the synagogues”!!!

See the context that starts in chapter 1:

“But become DOERS of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. Because if anyone is a hearer of the Word, and not a DOER, this one is like a man studying his natural face in a mirror; for he studied himself, and has gone away, and immediately he forgot of what kind he was. But the one looking into the perfect Law of liberty, and CONTINUING in it, this one not having become a forgetful hearer, but a DOER of the WORK, this one will be blessed in his doing.” (James 1:23-25)

Question – What does he mean by “perfect Law of liberty”?

Answer – James explains: “If you truly fulfill the royal Law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well.” (James 2:8).

Please read again; James means the very same Ten Commandments!!!!!!!!!

                          Any doubt?

Here again in no unclear sense he clarifies:

“For He who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not murder.” But if you do not commit adultery, but commit murder, you have become a TRANSGRESSOR OF THE LAW. So speak and so do as being about to be judged through a Law of freedom. (James 2:11-12)

Now it has become as clear as the bright summer sun that Apostle James means the 10C by phrases like “Works”, “perfect Law of liberty”, “the royal Law”, “Law of freedom” etc!!!!!!!!!!

                          FURTHER NOTES:-

                          1) Please read James 1:23-25 again. The Apostle compares the Ten Commandments to a MIRROR!!! We look in the mirror. The mirror shows the dirt on our faces. But the mirror will NOT remove the dirt off our faces! We need water to wash the dirt.

Similarly, the Ten Commandments, like a mirror, show the sins in us.

BUT, note this point, THE 10C WILL NOT REMOVE THE SIN!!!!!!!!!

Only Jesus’ precious blood can cleanse our sins!!!!!!!

So, no, the 10C will not give LIFE to us! The 10C will not remove our sins! But the 10C will show us whether we are sinners or not!!!!

                          2) We have seen that James calls the 10C as “ROYAL Law”. This is because this very 10C is going to be the fundamental laws in the coming Kingdom of God. These commandments with the notifications and ordinances shall be sent to the whole world from the Headquarters of the Millennial world, Jerusalem, from where Jesus will be ruling the World Government (Isa 2:3; Mica 4:2)!!!!!!!!!!!

Just imagine a world where nobody ‘murders’ (no war, no terrorism etc) or ‘steals’ (economic surpluses for everyone etc) or ‘commit adultery’ (no orphans, no broken homes etc), JUST three of the commands!! The world will be better by more than a half measure!!!!!!

Yet you say we don’t need to follow the Law?!

                          THE REAL MISUNDERSTOOD VERSE

In fact, what is the most misunderstood Bible related phrase is one phrase humanly termed as, “saved by faith alone”! But ‘saved by faith alone’ is not in the Bible. (On the contrary, ‘we are NOT saved by faith alone’ is in the Bible).

But what we find in the Bible is as follows:

“Then we conclude a man to be justified by faith without works of Law.” (Rom 3:28).

“Works of law” is the most misunderstood verse in the Biblical history post Martin Luther! By works of law we assume that these are our “efforts to follow the Ten Commandments”!

                          But this assumption is untrue.

I have already stated that Paul considers the 10C as “spiritual” and the works of law as “fleshly”.

Yes, by “works of law” Paul meant primarily the ANIMAL SACRIFICES through the Levitical priesthood as well as the food and drink offerings, “various washings”, circumcision etc!!!!!!!!!

So Paul is absolutely right, “by works of Law not one of all flesh will be justified before Him”.

                          Why?

“for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” (Heb 10:4). That is why!!!

It is only through the blood of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God that the sins of humanity will be removed.

This is the crux of all what Paul is saying. He never threw away the spiritual laws of God!
                          **************************

“But I would like to focus on one point that you seem to keep overlooking every time I post to you.” ——– B&E

We are not to discuss your personal life or mine. We need to discuss on the “theological” question of whether one needs to follow the law or not.

I may be a loner in my position, I know!

            Dear Nephesh roi ,

I too have studied this topic and you couldn’t have made it more clear. Just like you to know that you are not alone on this one. J C Ryle would agree with you too.

“Let us beware of despising the law of the Ten Commandments. Let us not suppose for a moment that it is set aside by the Gospel, or that Christians have nothing to do with it. The coming of Christ did not alter the position of the Ten Commandments one hair’s breadth. If anything, it exalted and raised their authority. (Rom. 3:31).
The law of the Ten Commandments is God’s eternal measure of right and wrong. By it is the knowledge of sin. By it the Spirit shows men their need of Christ, and drives them to Him.
To it Christ refers His people as their rule and guide for holy living. In its right place it is just as important as “the glorious Gospel.” – It cannot save us. We cannot be justified by it. But never, never let us despise it. It is a symptom of an ignorant and unhealthy state of religion, when the law is lightly esteemed. the true Christian “delights in the law of God.” (Rom. 7:22).

            God Bless x

              Hi Catherine,

Thanks for your post. I do believe the law and the 10 Commandments serve today to prove that all people are sinners. And thus in need of a Savior. But as a born again Christian, the Mosaic law goes away, to be replaced by the New Covenant in Christ.

So I’ll ask the same question to you as I did to Nephesh Roi – have you sinned since becoming a Christian? -B&E

                Hi B & E,

Not sure what you are trying to say here? Is that a trick question?

1 John 1:8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

1 John 2:4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.

May I ask you a question – why do you have such a dislike of the law?

Surely it is sin that leads to death not the law and sin is the transgression of the law.

                God Bless x

                  Hi Catherine,

Thanks for your comments. I did not ask a trick question. I asked a very clear question: have you sinned since you became a Christian? As I have stated in earlier discussions in this thread if you believe that born again Christians must keep the Mosaic law, then you should be able to personally testify to how well you are doing at keeping it. And if you are not keeping it perfectly, which the Bible clearly and unequivocally requires, you are therefore not a Christian. Note this is not my belief – I am merely pointing out the logical conclusion of the false gospel that you are promoting. No one can keep the law. This was the pronouncement of the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15. And you are doing precisely what the Apostles shunned – namely trying to force others to keep a law that you yourself have violated. So as I have asked, have you sinned since you were a Christian? Do you love God with all your mind? If so, then how many sinful thoughts have you had in the past year?

In no way did I say I “dislike the law.” The article explains the Biblical purpose of the law. If you feel my interpretation of Scripture is incorrect, please feel free to cite the passages for which I am in error and provide your interpretation. Please note that I take a much stronger stance in discussions of this topic because the preaching of works-based salvation is a dangerous heresy that the Bible goes out of its way to refute and rebuke. Paul says its tantamount to witchcraft. So I humbly urge you to prayerfully reconsider your position. We have no works of our own to boast in. We are saved solely by the shed blood of Christ – His finished work on the cross for the redemption of sin. -B&E

          GREAT CONTRADICTION

On one hand you teach the following:

“none of the laws, even the ten commandments, apply to Christians today”

“And this is how all people are saved. It is through faith not through keeping the Ten Commandments”

“Those who try to justify themselves by keeping the commandments are in for a rude awakening”

“So none of the Old Covenant laws, including the ten commandments are a part of the covenant of a Christian who is a true born again believer in God.”

“Anyone preaching that the Mosaic Law is required or that the Ten Commandments are the way of going to Heaven is preaching a false message.”

          GREAT CONTRADICTION

On the other hand you teach the following:

“So if we are not under ANY of the Ten Commandments, Christians can just sin as much as they want not? Anything goes? Murder?”
“The obvious answer to this question is no. Christians are not free to sin willy nilly.” (Curiously, why do you connect sin with ten commandments?!!)

“Christians do need the Ten Commandments read to them every morning to know that stealing or adultery is wrong. They know it in their hearts because God has now put His law into the hearts of all who believe.”

“Jesus quotes the Mosaic law and then shows that His standards are far superior:”

“Not only was intimacy outside of marriage adultery, but even looking at another person outside of marriage with lust was adultery in Jesus’ eyes.”

          NOW ONE QUESTION

          What exactly are you teaching?

Do we need or do we not need the ten commandments?

          Please make a final decision!!!

Your question:- “So are you keeping all of the commandments?”

“Make me to understand the way of Your Commandments, and I will speak of Your wonderful works.” (Psalms 119:27)

“Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your Law; yea, I shall observe it with all my heart. Cause me to walk in the path of Your Commandments; for I delight in them.” (Psalms 119:34-35)

“The Law of Your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver.” (Psalms 119:72)

“Your hands have made me and formed me; give me understanding so that I may learn Your Commandments.” (Psalms 119:73)

“I understand more than the old men, because I keep Your Commandments.” (Psalms 119:100)

“Through Your Commandments I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.” (Psalms 119:104)

I find it interesting that every time there is a comment from someone who advocates “law keeping” they never say they are actually keeping the law or are willing to testify as to how good they are at it. Without fail every time I ask this question it is never answered. If law keeping is what the Christian life is premised on, why is that all of the “you must keep the comamndments” advocates never willing to disclose their own law keeping record?

I strongly agree with you Nephesh, Christianity and Judaism are man made religions that stray from the “Word” and have false teachings and Satanic doctrines. All “Christian” religions are based off of Catholicism and Judaism is based on Babylonian pagan god worship. Catholicism is linked to Islam through mother of heaven worship “Mary” and the Fatima aberration. http://www.thepropheticyears.com/comments/Apostasy%20in%20the%20Church.HTM Judaism clings to pagan gods and denial of the Messiah. http://yahwehism.com/html/yah.html http://jesus-messiah.com/html/yaho-meaning.html http://ro-jo-yo.hubpages.com/hub/biblenames The deception of “all religions” is well founded and in practice. Yehowshuwa never held church inside a building with a Pagan Steeple nor did the Apostles. Man’s “church” is a building, (of this world) Yehowah’s Church is Faith.(Spiritual, not of this world) Hebrews are the children of Yehowah,as was Yehowashuwa. Jews are not Hebrew. They claim to be,but truly they are not Biblical followers. Repent and rejoice in Glory of His name. http://ro-jo-yo.hubpages.com/hub/Yehowshuwa

“Let this be a lesson and warning to any ministry, pastor or group who teach that somehow keeping the Mosaic law can lead to Heaven or some extra blessing.”

“Those who try to justify themselves by keeping the commandments are in for a rude awakening”

“Anyone preaching that the Mosaic Law is required or that the Ten Commandments are the way of going to Heaven is preaching a false message.”

          Jesus’ warning to the above!:

“Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name do many works of power? And then I will declare to them, I never knew you; “depart from Me, those working LAWLESSNESS!” (Mat 7:22-23)

“The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all the offenses, and those who practice LAWLESSNESS. And they will throw them into the furnace of fire; there will be weeping and gnashing of the teeth.” (Mat 13:41-42)

Let us take good care we are not part of any ministry, pastor or groups that teaches or preaches lawlessness!!!

If you look at what Jesus says in Mathew 22:35-40 and then read the 10 commandments closely you will notice something very important about what Jesus done when he explained it. Jesus covered all the commandments in two. The commandments have only two main topics. 1-How we are to be towards God.(honoring him…etc.2-How we treat other human beings. Its not that hard to see it. Your not loving God if your with all your heart if you use his name in vain. Your not loving your neighbor if your killing them or taking from them. Jesus made it simple and everyone messes it up with their wisdom. God bless

After studying this further i have changed my view on this. I do believe jesus covered all ten in two but what i was missing was that grace is greater than law. Not one man can make it to heaven under the law. The only man who could brought us grace because it was something we could never accomplish without the Lord Jesus. God bless all

              Hi Stacy,

Thanks for your comments. I would only add that Jesus’ commands actually go far past the 10 commandments as they go to our feelings and thought life. Jesus makes hateful thoughts a sin on par with murder. He makes lusting in the heart equivalent to adultery. This is a far higher standard than the 10 commandments. Again, it is another reason why Hebrews calls the New Covenant “a better covenant.” It goes to the heart and not just external behavior. And it also actually provides a way for us to be saved – through faith in Christ of course. I just offer this for your consideration. God bless you abundantly. -B&E

Yes i understand all that, but i was just making it short. I watched some videos of Joseph Prince, well actually about 4 hours worth and went over every verse he talked about and it opened my eyes how preaching about our sins isnt as effective to changing our sinful ways as just looking to God and his goodness and love for us.

This is all good except it is untrue. Experience is always better than theological musings. So here goes. Years ago I had a dear friend who was a young black woman. She had been raised in an inner-city church where her grand father was pastor.
She told me that shortly after starting to attend the church we were both going to at that time the pastor of that church was preaching a sermon and spoke against fornication. She whispered to her girlfriend asking what fornication was and when told her reaction was “that’s a sin!”
She had been a believer all her life but because of the neglect of her spiritual leaders and her own lack of spiritual discipline in reading the word she was unaware. The law is our school master until we mature.
“Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.” [1Jo 3:4 KJV]
If you don’t know the law you will NOT know it is sin. DUH!

            Hi TJCOOP,

Thanks for your comments. Christians do not need need the Mosiac Law because we have something far better: The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit reproves us sin, convicts us to repentance and testifies of Christ and His mercy. This is the law written in our hearts as The Lord prophesied He would do in His new covenant (Jeremiah 31).

yes this person you knew grew up in a church…but was she a Born Again Christian?
There is a MAJOR difference between being Born Again and being a regular christian.
When you are a Born Again Christian, you die with Jesus, you are a New Creation, you are cleansed, you are made Holy, and Father has poured out his spirit on you and written his law in your heart.

I was exactly like her and just like many others.
Raised in a christian background family, but only taught by tradition and NOT truth.
            Truth is important.

When I was Born Again, I had a dream after fasting away from worldly things and reading the bible. The dream confirmed it all. After the dream I was so angry that all these years, the way I’ve been taught the bible was wrong! It was not based on Truth but based on tradition!

How can we not know what law is when God just wrote it in our hearts?
All we need is Holy Spirit as BeginningandEnd said. We bare fruits of the spirit, and by bearing fruits of the spirit how can we sin?

We cannot get to heaven by our works, it is only by Jesus and Jesus has done it all.
All we have to do is believe in him to get to heaven, not by our works in trying to obey all commandments and law.

You always seem to teach me or touch me where I need it. After I read this one I’m thinking like ok I’ve never killed anybody, I honor my mom and dad, but guess what I HAVE NOT LOVED MY NEIGHBOR AS I LOVE MYSELF. Not the lady next door but you know that supervisor, or that one person that you just can’t like. I confess im guilty. Christ’s standards are higher than the law of Moses and we as Christians have to pray for the faith and grace to try to live up to them. The fact that you were convicted about not being loving to all the people around you as you are to self (something I am guilty of as well) is proof of the Holy Spirit working in you and God’s law on your heart. I’ ve been studying a bunch of these “grace” preachers and they dont outright say that you can ignore the ten commandments but they do imply that because of grace you cant lose your salvation. I disagree. They say if at some point in a persons life he loses faith its because he never had it. The ten commandments are impossible for man to keep all of them but, God knew that. The jews told moses to tell God that they could live by all his rules so he gave them the 10 rules that would make them a “perfect” person. Do i believe they went to hell because they couldnt? No. He knew they would sin, but that dosn’t mean he didn’t want them to live their lives by them. Grace preachers say that living your life following these commandments is trying to earn your way into heaven by works. I say that i have faith in my Lord Jesus and i try my best to live by Gods rules because thats the way he wants us to be. They wont say it, but they make it sound like faith alone will get you into heaven. To that they will say ” no” you have to do good works even though they just said following Gods rules is trying to earn your way into heaven by works. They get very wishy washy when it comes to this. Why they even try to push this issue is confusing. Its like they are trying to prove that we have all had it wrong and they have figured it all out and we must see it their way. But the thing that really confuses me is, why? I recently watched hours of sermons from an up and coming gracer named Joseph Prince from Singapore. Man hes good! He talks about how we are too hard on ourselves about sin and how we should let go of the guilt because we have been saved through grace and we are good to go. Hes really good and had me pulled in until i caught him in something. It was subtle, but it made me wonder how or “why” a man who has preached for as long as he has would make such a mistake. He said look at how God called Abraham his friend and he sinned by lying about Sarah being his sister to pharoh and king Abimelech and God still blessed him. He accused Abraham of being a liar! As a preacher of the Bible he knows Abraham didnt lie. Abraham sad” she is indeed my sister: she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife. Prince was making the point that sin is ok after all Gods friend did. He went so far as to call Gods own high prophet a liar! It was subtle and he didnt stay on the subject long, but just enough for someone unwise to think ” well that must be true”. A real man of God would not be an “accuser ” of Abraham! He even kept trying to point out that Abraham was a rich man just like himself…hmMmm …curious.

            Hi stacy,

I am very glad that at least one person has got it correct regarding the “law versus grace” controversy. Usually when I discuss with ‘grace alone’ preachers, they call me ‘legalstic’ when I tell them about the need of God’s commandments!

The fact is we all (they and us) accept grace, love, free justification etc. But the moment we say we accept also the commandments, we are out. They falsely accuse us that we reject grace, love and justification when in fact we do not!

Such is the power of their preaching!
            *************************

“they dont outright say that you can ignore the ten commandments but they do imply that” – Stacy

The pity is our friend Beginning and End preaches outright that we do not need to follow the ten commandments!!!

In fact I am a bit confused because he says on one hand that a born again Christian need not follow the 10C but at the same time says it is wrong to steal, commit adultery etc!!!

(BTB, did you see our discussion on this topic? It is somewhere up on this page)
            **********************************

“The ten commandments are impossible for man to keep all of them but, God knew that.” – Stacy

Yes, without the Holy Spirit, it is IMPOSSIBLE to follow the spiritual commandments (Rom 8:7). God knows that.

Apostle Paul explains clearly why it is impossible:

“For the Law being powerless, in that it was weak through the flesh” (Rom 8:3)

The law is powerless and weak through the natural mind! The natural mind is not subject to God’s law and it cannot be!

But once we receive the Holy Spirit of God as free gift, the spiritual law becomes strong and powerful in us because we walk according to the Spirit and mind the spiritual things, God’s law being spiritual(verse 4-5)!!!

God expects us to “overcome” sin instead of leading a lethargic faith alone life! “Overcoming” is a struggle we do with the help of the Holy Spirit! (Overcoming is not earning)! In fact we are to “work out our salvation”!!!

That is why Jesus said “with God everything is possible” (Mat 19:26)
            ************************

“Do i believe they went to hell because they couldnt? No.” – Stacy

No, they did NOT go to hell!

In fact all Israel is going to be saved later!!

“For God has shut up all in unbelief, so that He might show mercy to all.” (Rom 11:32)

So when and how God is going to show mercy to all Israel?

Oh, it is beautifully described in Ezekiel chapter 37!!!

“Behold, I will open your graves and cause you to come up out of your graves, O My people, and I will bring you to the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am Jehovah when I have opened your graves and have brought you up out of your graves, O My people. And I shall put My Spirit within you, and you shall live; and I will put you on your own land.” (Ezek 37:12-14).

So Israel could not follow God and His laws because God did not give the Holy Spirit to them. God shut them up in unbelief to show mercy to them later. When in the general resurrection of all dead, they will be brought back to life and FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THEIR LIFE all of them will receive the Holy Spirit and they will follow God and His laws!!!

            Glorious!, right?

(Ezekiel 37:11 shows clearly that these are the Israelites who are lost as far as salvation is concerned and died!!!)

“and so ALL Israel will be saved” (Rom 11:26)!!!
            ****************************************

“Grace preachers say that living your life following these commandments is trying to earn your way into heaven by works. I say that i have faith in my Lord Jesus and i try my best to live by Gods rules because thats the way he wants us to be.” – Stacy

That is the trick they use always.

            Example:

You are somewhere on a lonely road and find an orphan boy who is lost, dirty, hungry, thursty and without hope. He has some nasty habits like drug addiction which he learned on the street.

You, out of your mercy, call him and tell him to come to your home. He accepts your invitation. You adopt him as your own son, wash him, feed him and arranges for his treatment and education.

Now this comfortable life he received is a FREE gift from you. Did he earn it? Not at all!!! He was already a lost child anyway. It was your mercy to give him this gift of better life FREELY!!! He did not earn it!!!!

Now do you expect him to follow some principles you have set at your home? Yes, because it is your home and you have set the rules for the smooth and decent functioning of your home!

If and when the boy is following your rules at home, can we say that the boy is “earning” his comfortable life?

Not at all!!! Because you have already given it as a free gift to him. He was already a lost child!

Same case with God and us!

We are already dead and lost children in sin. God out of His mercy calls us and adopts us as His own children through the Holy Spirit. We cannot “earn” that life. But when God accepts us as His own, He expects us to follow His rules and commands! That is not earning anything!!! That is obedience!

This is the great point the ‘faith alone’ preachers do not consider and they are very sure about their position.
            ****************************

              Hi Samm

When you reference Gen 26:5, you must recognize that the commandments issued under the prophetic leadership of Moses hadn’t been given. So the Commandments that Abraham kept cannot be assumed to be the Ten Commandments unless scripture expressly says this. Abraham obeyed GOD prior to the Ten Commandments and was justified by faith. I don’t recommend killing, but I can just as easily kill someone with an evil stare or a hateful remark. I could keep the Sabbath but in the same breath cut myself off from my flesh as noted in Isaiah 58 in regards to rigorously following the commandment but missing the spirit and intent of the law which was Worship of GOD and fellowship with/service to my Family (to include the body of believers). JESUS went above and beyond the Commandments in condemning a lustful eye as equivalent to adultery or calling your brother a fool as equivalent to killing him. He even points out that honoring mother and father can be negated when we become consumed with carrying out religious obligations above care for family/body of believers (Matthew 5:21,22; Isaiah 58:6,7 [but for contextual understanding it’s best to read all of Isaiah 58]; Luke 13:10-16; Matthew 5:28; 15:3-9 for a few references).

And although Abraham didn’t “lie” about Sarah being his sister, he was being deceptive in hiding the fact that she was his wife for fear of death. Did he lie? Not outright, but again he was deceptive. If we follow JESUS’ recommendation to let your yes be “yes” and your no “no” (i.e., say what you mean without intending to mislead – Matthew 5:37) then Abraham, out of fear and possibly a lapse in faith that GOD would bring him to the promise despite the possibility of being killed by Pharaoh for his attractive wife, did lie. But we see in scripture that despite his other lapse in faith in GOD brining about the promise through Sarah (i.e., Ishmael by Hagar) that GOD still blessed him and his final judgement of Abraham was that he was justified (Romans 4:3).

                Dear Ben,

First of all, please know that though you have addressed your response to Samm, you have indeed replied to my above post. So I respond.

“When you reference Gen 26:5, you must recognize that the commandments issued under the prophetic leadership of Moses hadn’t been given.” — Ben.

Then you should tell me what were all those “voice”, “charge”, “commandments”, “statutes” and “laws” of God that Abraham obeyed!

Let us make a comparative study:

God’s testimony regarding Abraham is as follows:

“Because that Abraham obeyed my voice (H6963 – Qol), and kept my charge (H4931 – Mishmereth), my commandments (H4687 – Mitsvah), my statutes (H2708 – Chuqqah), and my laws (H8451 – Torah).” (Gen 26:5)

Now after recceiving the laws of God including the 10 commandments, this is what Moses advises the Israel:

“Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge (H4931 – Mishmereth), and his statutes (H2708 – Chuqqah), and his judgments (H4941 – Mishpat), and his commandments (H4687 – Mitsvah), alway.” (Deut 11:1).

Later when David was on his deathbed, he advised his son Solomon”

“and keep the charge (H4931 – Mishmereth) of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes (H2708 – Chuqqah), and his commandments (H4687 – Mitsvah), and his judgments (H4941 – Mishpat), and his testimonies, according to that which is written in the law of Moses” (1 Kings 2:3).

So you see Abraham, Israel and Solomon are all asked to obey the same set of laws and commandments!!!

And we see that although God’s set of laws and commandments were given to the large public of Israel in a codified/written format, the limited number of Patriarchs whom God called knew these laws and commandments in a non-codified/non-written format!

                A few examples:

Abraham knew about TITHES; “And he gave him a tithe of all.” (Gen 14:20).

                So Tithing is NOT Mosaic!!!!!!!!!!

Noah knew about the dietary laws of clean and unclean animals. In fact God asks Noah to take 7 pairs of clean animals and 1 pair of unclean animals YET God does not tell him how to identify clean and unclean!!!!!!!!!!

This shows clearly that Noah already knew how to identify and segregate them!!!!

So dietary laws are NOT Mosaic!!!!!!!

Abraham started the practice of circumcision. So Moses did NOT start it.

                So circumcision is NOT Mosaic!!!!!!!!!

All of the Patriarchs knew about sacrifices and they offered sacrifices to God. Hence Moses did not start these sacrifices. (Righteous Abel knew that the offering should be a firstborn (Gen 4:4) and Noah knew that the sacrifice should be from clean animals only (Gen 8:20))

So sacrifices originally was NOT Mosaic!!!!!!!!!!

The Patriarchs knew even the Ten Commandments (I will give the evidence in my next point).

So even the 10 C was NOT Mosaic!!!!!!!!!

Also the Bible says that Noah was “a preacher of righteousness” (2 Pet 2:5). In the Bible “righteousness” is always identified as an obedience to certain standard of godly character!

Tell me, what was it that Noah was preaching for hundreds of years in his life; to obey what?!!!
                ————————————————————————–

“So the Commandments that Abraham kept cannot be assumed to be the Ten Commandments unless scripture expressly says this.” — Ben.

The Scripture expressly says that the Patriarchs knew about and obeyed the Ten Commandments.

                Here it is:

Patriarch Joseph was a very handsome man. So Potiphar’s wife wanted to sleep with him. When she enticed him, Joseph gave the following reply:

“Look! My master doesn’t have to worry about anything in the house with me in charge, and he has entrusted everything into my care. No one has more authority in this house than I do. He has withheld nothing from me, except you, and that’s because you’re his wife. So how can I commit such a horrible evil? How can I SIN AGAINST ***GOD***?” (Gen 39:8-9)

                Now notice carefully!

Joseph did NOT say: sin against Potiphar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But he said sin against GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How in the world did Joseph know that adultery is a sin against God and that adultery is a horrible evil …………………………….. UNLESS ………………. he knew the commandment, “Thou shall not commit adultery”?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If this is not enough, then consider this another case where one of the ten commandments is involved in the fullest spiritual application!

Cain was fuming with tremendous “hatred” towards his brother Abel (Gen 4:5).

God knew what would or could follow such hatred. So He warned Cain:

“”Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, ***SIN*** IS CROUCHING AT THE DOOR. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.” (Gen 4:6-7)

                Let us think.

“Sin is the transgression of the law” (1 John 3:4).

So WHAT was the SIN God was warning Cain as crouching at the door to be aware of?!!!

Yes, of course, that SIN or transgression was of the commandment, “Thou shall not murder”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But unfortunately Cain did not listen to God and thus the first murder in human history took place!!!

                One more point.

Here God applied both the physical aspect as well as the fullest spiritual intent of that commandment when Cain developed “hatred” against Abel.

The same God later “magnified” the same law:

“You have heard that it was said to the ancients: “Do not commit murder!” And, Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the Judgment. But I say to you, Everyone who is angry with his brother without cause shall be liable to the Judgment.” (Mat 5:21-22).

                Yes, the 10 C were pre-Mosaic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
                ————————————————————————

“JESUS went above and beyond the Commandments in condemning a lustful eye as equivalent to adultery or calling your brother a fool as equivalent to killing him.” — Ben.

It would be blasphemy to say that Jesus went above and beyond the commandments of His God and Father!!

                He did NOT!

Instead, He went to the very heart/ core of the commandments. He revealed the very spiritual intent of much of the commandments just as He explained to Cain!

Jesus’ stand on the Old Testament is as follows:

“And it is easier for the heaven and earth to pass than for one tittle of the Law to fail.” (Luke 16:17).

Watch out, that is a very strong statement from the Lord.

And there is no hint even of Him going “above and beyond” of what is written in God’s Word!!!
                ————————————————————————–

“He even points out that honoring mother and father can be negated when we become consumed with carrying out religious obligations above care for family/body of believers” — Ben.

I would dare say that the above is a faulty understanding of the Scripture!

Your interpretation or my interpretation is immaterial here. What is important is what Jesus actually said here.

“But answering He said to them, Why do you also transgress the command of God on account of your tradition? For God commanded, saying, “Honor your father and mother,” and, “The one speaking evil of father or mother, by death let him die.” But you say ‘Whoever tells his father or his mother, “Whatever support you might have received from me has been given to God,” does not have to honor his father.’ Because of your tradition, then, you have disregarded the authority of God’s word.” (Mat 15:3-6)

                Here Jesus contradicts two things:

The commands of God vs the human tradition!

The commands of God is contained in the Bible which was annulled by the human tradition of evading responsibilty of obeying spiritual laws in their full intent.

No, the Jews were NOT doing any “religious obligations” when they disobeyed God’s commands because NOWHERE in the Old Testament is found an advice to evade responsibility of looking after the parents!
                ——————————————————————————–

“[but for contextual understanding it’s best to read all of Isaiah 58]” — Ben.

I could not find anything against the commands of God in Isaiah 58!

“Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers.” (Isa 58: 3)

God had instructed the Israelites to give rest to the laborers on the days of fast as well as Sabbaths.

“You shall not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger within your gates.”

Yet Israel during Isaiah’s time oppressed their laborers on such days. This was against the commandments of God. This is what Isaiah described in chapter 58!

“If you keep your feet from trampling the Sabbath, from pursuing your own interests on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD’s holy day honorable; and if you honor it by not going your own ways and seeking your own pleasure or speaking merely idle words,” (Isa 58:13).

Here God is asking us to obey one of the ten commandments!!!

Frankly I did not see anything against God’s commands in Isaiah chapter 58.

I do not know why you have referenced this chapter here at all!
                —————————————————————————–

“Did he lie? Not outright, but again he was deceptive.” — Ben.

                I share your feeling here.

But I never said Abraham never sinned.

Abraham and all human beings, except Jesus of Nazareth, have sinned. This is a true Biblical statement.

But the fact that they all sinned (= transgressed God’s laws) shows clearly that God’s spiritual commandments were applicable in their lives!!!!!!!!!!

If there was no law in their life, they could not transgress any law, and if there was no transgression there was no sin in them!!!!!!!!!!

But all of them sinned which means all of them transgressed God’s laws and that proves that God’s laws were applicable in their lives!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Nephesh roi , I would just like to take the time to say that I too have studied this topic in great depth ever since someone told me “the law kills” I have followed your posts and have understood every word (glory be to Dod)and would just like you to know that you are not alone on this one. I believe that J C Ryle says

“Let us, for another thing, beware of despising the law of the Ten Commandments. Let us not suppose for a moment that it is set aside by the Gospel, or that Christians have nothing to do with it. The coming of Christ did not alter the position of the Ten Commandments one hair’s breadth. If anything, it exalted and raised their authority. (Rom. iii. 31.) The law of the Ten Commandments is God’s eternal measure of right and wrong. By it is the knowledge of sin. By it the Spirit shows men their need of Christ, and drives them to Him. To it Christ refers His people as their rule and guide for holy living. In its right place it is just as important as ” the glorious Gospel.”—It cannot save us. We cannot be justified by it. But never, never let us despise it. It is a symptom of an ignorant and unhealthy state of religion, when the law is lightly esteemed. The true Christian “delights in the law of God.” (Rom. vii. 22.)

Laws and rules cannot save, but only offer penalty and death. Having faith, you are offered grace, which saves. Grace is God’s power and enables you to do His WILL. If the Holy Spirit is working in your heart, and you are doing the Father’s will, you are able to do ALL things through Christ. Therefore, whether you are keeping Jesus’s condensed version of the commandments (Love God, Love your neighbor – which actually covers all the 10 commandments and is even stricter) or the original “hardcopy” in stone (you just can’t break any commandment if you are loving properly), you are not breaking any laws or being lawless, or promoting lawlessness. Of course, one might not be expected to be perfect (which means being a mature Christian) and accidentally make a mistake. Once you realize you sinned, say a prayer and ask God to help prevent you from doing it again. Repented. Forgiven. It’s all good. Keeping it simple may be the “milk ” needed to multiply the harvest. Although the “meat” is a more interesting meal for the laborers, unfortunately, the one-upmanship that lies beneath the surface does not speak well of the faithful in general.

God gave commandments to Israelites, Gentiles did not have to follow it. WRONG God is Beginning and End said, the main commandments are the 10 Commandments. And Sabbath day is a day to be kept holy.
          CORRECT. All Sabbaths

Jesus did fulfill all 10 commandments.
          CORRECT.

You have to know that when we say God, we are referring to Father/Jesus/Holy Spirit. They are 1 God. So the commandments of God is (The same commandments of Jesus) That he Fulfilled. As an example to all!! Father’s commandment to Moses were ONLY for the Israelites. WRONG If they were for everyone then the Romans would worship God. WRONG The Commandments were for everyone, the Romans too ! You even state that yourself below !!
Jesus’s commandment which is same as Father is for everyone both Jews and Gentiles. It is a new Covenant, the old is past.

. If Jesus said his yoke is light and not burden, it makes sense why we only need to follow 2 commandments to get to heaven.
WRONG. You just stated that all Commandments are for everyone. .
Again what did Jesus do? He saved lives and preached the Gospel on Sabbath day. . CORRECT

Also brother how can you rest on Sabbath day when we don’t even know which exact day is Sabbath? is it Monday? Sunday or Saturday? We don’t know for many people come up with different dates.
RESEARCH Here is a detailed explanation of the Sabbath days http://rcg.org/books/crwnos.html

. Old law was only for Jews.
WRONG. You contradict yourself again !
If you understand what the will of Jesus and Father is, you will know what God’s commandments are.
          CORRECT
congratulations, we are no longer under the Law. You are free!
BE CAREFUL with that statement ! God Blesses those who seek the truth.

You have written so many of the answers, yet you fail to see them clearly. In particular, when the Lord says “on these two hang all the law and the prophets”, he wasn’t simply stating there is now only two laws. How do we know this? You identified the concept whilst explaining covenants.

The “implied” terms of a contract. The Ten Commandments, the Mosaic Laws, these were merely written examples of the minimum requirements of the implied terms of the contract.

As for your assertion that “all have sinned” .. this is clearly refuted numerous times in scripture. The best example being a new testament era statement from Luke’s gospel:
“Luk 1:5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
Luk 1:6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. ”

There are numerous other examples in scripture. The bigger problem here is an age old papal bull that forbade the teachings or adherence to judaic law. This became, in time, a fundamental basis of catholic doctrine, and when the reformation arose, ‘protestants’ (who were ALL former catholics) this error was never rectified. Revelation clearly points towards these events, which are now every historical, but the delusion and error remains. Christians cheerily boast ‘there is no law’ not realising they are chanting the pre-eminent deed of the anti-christ who would see fit to change the law .. by saying it is no longer valid.

This truth is fruther borne out in the letters to the seven churches, to wit:
“Rev 2:14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.” and again …
“Rev 2:20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.”

Bear in mind that this revelation was given to John decades after the death of Yeshua, and relates to the condition of the church which was founded AFTER Yeshua proclaimed “it is finished”, a statement which you interpreted as meaning the mosaic covenant and applicable laws were then brought to an end – yet very clearly the sin of these churches related to 2 of these very same laws.
It is clear that the sin of these churches relates to false teachers who taught that the law was done away with, and thereby caused the people to sin.

The great error is teaching that the law is done away with.
You can NOT get around that problem by making claims that the spirit convicts us, or that the law is ‘written in our hearts’, and yet still proclaim there is no law.

            Hi Zion Prophet,

If you claim to follow the Mosaic Law, can you at least admit that The Lord Jesus Christ is NOT your High Priest? There is no question that by the Mosaic Law, a High Priest MUST be a Levite. Jesus is of the tribe of Judah. So in order for your position to be consistent, you must have a different High Priest. Do you agree with this? I await your response.

Unfortunately you make a lot of assumptions, and incorrect ones at that.

“Luk 1:5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

Now, it is a well known fact Yeshua and John the Baptist were related – and through a lineage which comes from the priestly lineage.

I think you should study more.

                Hi Zion Prophet,

The Lord Jesus Christ and John the Baptist were related by their mothers, who were sisters. Your tribe in Mosaic law is determined by your FATHER. Zacharias was a Levite, and we are specifically told his course, which goes back to the days of King David. So there is no question as to what what tribe he is from. Joseph, the Lord’s adopted father, was of the tribe of Judah. Thus by Mosaic law (and many Old Testament prophecies which of course predicted it), Jesus Christ is of the tribe of Judah, not Levi.

And obviously, Zaharias would never be praised in Scripture for his walking in righteousness and following the ordinances of God if he were illegitimately working in the temple in what would be a brazen defiance of God’s clear instruction.

So again, I go back to my question: If YOU are following Mosaic law, like you claim to, then Jesus Christ cannot be your High Priest. Because the High Priest must be a Levite. Otherwise you are breaking Mosaic law and have contradicted your entire position. So is your High Priest a Levite or not? Once again, I await your response.

Let’s nip this in the bud before it goes any further.

Instead of dealing with the points in my original post, your own recourse is to go on a personal attack. Of course, I already stated you make too many assumptions.

Your response is similar to one you gave earlier, that if someone does not agree with your viewpoint, they are either lacking in humility, or do not have the right spirit.

You are teaching people that there is no Law. The letters to the seven churches are dealing with churches who teach the same – indeed the condemnation comes straight from the Lord.

Now you refuse to address the points I raise in an ethical and respectful manner, why therefore should I respond to you? Deal with the issues raised in my original post. Did the Lord condemn the churches for violating the law, yes or no?

                    Hi Zion Prophet,

Nowhere in the article do I state that “there is no law.” The article is specifically dealing with the Mosaic covenant and explaining its purpose and expiration as detailed in Scripture. This does not mean there is no law. God’s revealed Word is His Law. The Lord gave many commandments before Moses was born. Sacrifices to God go back to Cain and Abel. So of course a born again Christian still has a responsibility to live a life that seeks to avoid sin. And that is the good purpose the law serves – to give knowledge of one’s sin. But we have something better than the tablets of stone once we are born again – we have the Holy Spirit. Who convicts and reproves of sin right into our hearts.

As for your references to Revelation 2, of course The Lord reproved the churches for their errors and sins. no one is perfect. Born again Christians will still fall into sin (myself included). I don’t see how Balaam’s doctrine or Jezebel’s influence relate directly to the Mosaic covenant. I am honestly not sure what point you are trying to make there. But if you are asking me if Jesus reproved these churches for their sins, my answer is yes.

And my question to you regarding the High Priest was not a personal attack. It is a question premised on a proper application of Scripture. I apologize if it seemed as if I was trying to attack you personally. But the purpose of the question was to demonstrate the clear error in believing that you have to follow the Mosaic covenant today. This would mean that Jesus Christ cannot be your High Priest. So now that I have addressed your points, I hope that you will answer my question.

B&E I will answer your query, in due course, however I did feel your initial response was a sidetrack from the main issue, which did indeed concern the law. So as to not infer incorrectly on my part, I will quote from your initial heading paragraph:

This study will explain the differences between the law, the Gospel and the covenants of God to show that no true, born again believer in Jesus Christ is required to follow the laws of the Mosaic covenant and that none of the laws, even the ten commandments, apply to Christians today. This article will also explain what “laws” Christians are under today and why we are free from the burdens of the Levitical law through Jesus Christ.

I notice that you concede there was a rebuke for sin, but avoided the nature of the sin. We know from scripture that sin is transgression of the Law – and so the sin recorded against these churches was ‘eating meat sacrificed to idols’, and ‘fornication’.

Specifically, the two sins mentioned in Rev 2 are contained in the Mosaic Law, including also one of the Ten Commandments. How therefore can you reconcile these sins, which these churches were commanded to repent from, with a claim that “no true, born again believer in Jesus Christ is required to follow the laws of the Mosaic covenant and that none of the laws, even the ten commandments, apply to Christians today”?

This was the whole essence of my original post. These sins are nowhere known EXCEPT for the very laws you state no longer apply to believers.

This is the very error I mentioned. The law still stands. The spirit leads and guides us ‘into all truth’ that we will know through the spirit which laws we are required to keep. It is only in the Law that gentiles would know which laws apply to them – and that is evidenced by James’s words following the Jerusalem council in Acts 15, to wit:

Act 15:20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.

Here, James only appears to provide that gentiles need only have 4 laws to worry about. Or would that be four laws plus the two that Yeshua stated? This conclusion would seem absurd, but perhaps we have a fuller answer in the very next verse:

Act 15:21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.

So here we can see that James is clearly saying that there are four primary requirements that gentile believers in the newly founded church should adhere to, all of which or from the very same laws, however, this is not the end of the matter for James declares that the words of Moses are preached every sabbath. Milk first, to wean them – then meat to help them grow.

Are gentiles required to keep all of the Mosaic law. Absolutely not, many of them did not apply to gentiles. But to say that NONE of them apply to gentiles at all is wholly erroneous. THAT is my whole point. YES, I know there is a great deal of error in the so-called ‘hebrew roots’ movements and others similar, but equally so, there is a great deal of error in saying that believers are no longer under the law, because some of those laws are unknown, BUT through the ‘torah’. It is only by reading and studying them will any gentile believer open the door for the spirit to lead and guide them into truth.

“Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.” In so doing, the spirit convicts.

                        Hi Zionprophet,

I am honestly very confused as to what your point is. Acts 15, when looked at in context, goes against your entire premise that Mosaic Law keeping is required. Let’s look at the entire chapter, so we can see what the true Biblical context is:

And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.
2 When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.

So right off the bat we see that there were certain people who were preaching that as a born again Christian “you must follow the Mosaic Covenant.” This is precisely what YOU are doing today. And notice that Paul and Barnabas are in total disagreement with them. So from the first 2 verses we see that those preaching a Gospel of law-keeping are in serious error.

3 And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren. 4 And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them.
5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses. 6 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.
7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. 8 And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; 9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. 10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? 11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they. 12 Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.

Again, we see that these men are pushing Christians to get circumcised as a way of following the Mosaic Covenant. And once again, now Paul, Banabas and Peter are in strong disagrement. Peter makes the same point this article makes – NO ONE was able to follow the Mosaic Covenant (including all of the Apostles). Why? Because Scripture is clear that breaking the law in one part is equal to violating every single commandment in the Mosaic Covenant. However, in the NEW COVENANT, it is GRACE that saves, not any action or law-keeping. The notion of trying to put the Mosaic covenant back in effect is so offensive to Peter he says “why do ye tempt God..?” which makes it clear that this against Biblical, Holy doctrine.

13 And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me: 14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. 15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, 16 After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: 17 That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. 18 Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world. 19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: 20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. 21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.

And here we have your quoted verse. So we can see in context, NONE of the Mosaic Covenant was to be applied to born again Christians. It is a yoke no one could bear and runs contrary to grace. However, the instructions about fornication, things strangled, etc., were done as a compromise since the Torah was still being preached at Christian meetings. The book of Acts is a very tricky book in the sense that we should not base a lot of our doctrine on specific things the early church did. Why not? Because the Gospels were not written at this point. It was an age of transition as the completed Scriptures were yet to come. But the items listed in James letter were a mere compromise to show there was still respect for the Old Testament. But clearly the Mosaic covenant could not be read as being in effect. How can I say this definitively? Because the Apostles clearly said Christians do not have to be circumcised. This was MAJOR. As shown in the article, circumcision was the entry sign into the Mosaic Covenant. Without circumcision, one was “cut off” and had no part in the covenant whatsoever. So for the apostles to say circumcision was uneccessary made it clear that the Mosaic Covenant was not in effect. From any reasonable reading of the Scripture, in context, this point is unmistakable.

22 Then pleased it the apostles and elders with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas and Silas, chief men among the brethren:
23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia. 24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment: 25 It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth. 28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; 29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

The Apostles pull rank here and put their official stamp on this message. And they make it clear. Those who were preaching Mosaic Law keeping received no such commandment from the official Apostles of Jesus Christ. Again, this passage refutes your Mosaic doctrine entirely.

30 So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch: and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle: 31 Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation. 32 And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.

So now Judas and Silas, who were also prophets, confirm the message of the Apostles. This passage shows that they were merely paying homage to those converted Jews who were still figuring out the difference between the two covenants. It was a temporary means to resolve conflict. Without circumcision, you have no part in the covenant, so their declaration that it was not required makes the issue quite clear.

The bible says a born again Christian is “Dead to the law.” Scripture calls it “dead”, “broken”, “passed away.” How do you reconcile your doctrine of Mosaic works with these verses? Or with the Apostle Paul:

7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. 8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. 10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

“So again, I go back to my question: If YOU are following Mosaic law, like you claim to, then Jesus Christ cannot be your High Priest. Because the High Priest must be a Levite. Otherwise you are breaking Mosaic law and have contradicted your entire position. So is your High Priest a Levite or not? Once again, I await your response.” — B&E

                  Hi B&E,

It is one of the greatest Biblical truths that:

Jesus Christ is the High Priest forever NOT according to the order of Aaron or any Levitical lineage!

Jesus Christ is the High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek!!!!!!!!!!!!

“As He also says in another place, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek,”” (Heb 5:6)

“having been called out by God as a High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek.” (Heb 5:10)

“where Jesus entered as forerunner for us, having become a High Priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” (Heb 6:20)

So the great office of High Priesthood of Jesus has nothing to do with Aaron or Levi!

                    Hi Nephesh Roi,

Thanks for your comments. But you are missing my point. Like you, the reader I was addressing believes that Christians are required to follow the Mosaic Covenant. That covenant requires a Levite to be one’s High Priest. Jesus Christ is not a Levite, so He thus cannot be your High Priest. He is the Priest of the New Covenant, which replaces the expired Mosaic Covenant. But for those who are still in bondage to the Old Covenant, then you have to still be searching for your Levite priest. And you cannot receive atonement because there is no temple. The contradictions go on and on for those who seek to promote Mosaic law-keeping.

                      Dear B&E,

“Like you, the reader I was addressing believes that Christians are required to follow the Mosaic Covenant.” — B&E

I agree it is my inability that I could not convince you regarding the difference between a “Covenant” and “spiritual laws” of God through my earlier posts!

(While I make sure that I try to answer each point you raise on this topic, I fail to see a similar effort from your side)

                      So I try again!

Neither do I follow any Mosaic covenant nor do I ask others to follow it!

“In speaking of a “new” covenant, he has made the first one obsolete, and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear.” (Heb 8:13)

So how can anyone follow a covenant which God Himself has declared as obsolete?!

A covenant is a contract or agreement between two parties that includes certain “terms and conditions” to abide by.

The covenant between God and Israel was that if the latter love and “obey” God’s laws, they shall be a special people with lot of special blessings. In this contract the laws of God (to be obeyed) were written on stone.

But since the one party Israel broke the terms and conditions of the contract God cancelled that agreement and made a NEW contract that was ratified with the precious blood of Jesus.

One speciality of this new contract was that God wrote these same laws (which were on the stone) in the inner minds and hearts of the other party (Jeremiah 31:33)!!!

So just because God cancelled the first contract does NOT mean God will compromise with His laws which Paul says are “good”, “holy”, “just” and “spiritual”!!!

                      A SAMPLE QUESTION

Here is the original first covenant with the core terms and conditions:

“The LORD had made a covenant with them and had ordered them: “Do not worship other gods; do not bow down to them or serve them or offer sacrifices to them. You shall obey me, the LORD, ………….; you are to bow down to me and offer sacrifices to me. You shall always obey the laws and commands that I wrote for you. You shall not obey other gods, and you shall not forget the covenant I made with you. You shall obey me, the LORD your God, and I will rescue you from your enemies.” (2 Kings 17:35-39).

We know that because of Israel’s disobedience, God cancelled this contract.

                      Now the question comes:

Just because the covenant is cancelled, is it okay and proper to worship other gods, bow down to them, serve them, disobey the true God etc etc?!

                      Not at all!!!

” For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second. For He finds fault with them (the problem was not with the covenant but with the 2nd party) when He says: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant (the problem was not with the covenant but with the 2nd party), and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put My laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” (Heb 8:7-10)

Your entire arguments would be valid IF God cancelled the first contract and never bothered to make any new contracts!!!!!!!!!!!!
                      *********************************************

“And you cannot receive atonement because there is no temple.” — B&E

Wow, sometimes you are so near the truth yet do not grasp the point!

Yes, in the first covenant when Israel sinned (“sinned” means transgressed God’s own laws) God instituted the animal sacrificial system (“Works of Law”) in place as “a remembrance of sins year by year, with the same sacrifices, which they offer continually” (Heb 10:3 and 1).

This was established as “our guardian until Christ came” (Gal 3:24).

ORIGINALLY GOD DID NOT HAVE THIS Sacrificial System in His mind!!!!!!!!!!!

“Indeed, when I brought your ancestors out of the land of Egypt, I didn’t speak or command them about burnt offering and sacrifice, but I did give them this command: Obey Me and I’ll be your God, and you will be My people. Walk in all the ways that I command you so it will go well for you.” (Jer 7:22-23)

So this animal sacrificial system or Works of Law “was added because of transgressions (of God’s laws), till the seed should come to whom the promise hath been made” (Gal 3:19)

Why did NOT God institute this animal sacrificial system or Works of Law from the beginning?

“for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins” (Heb 10:4).

It is only when Israel proved stiff necked that God established this Law to remind them of their sins.

It is only through the blood of Jesus that sins will be forgiven whether in first covenant or second covenant!!!!!!!!!

“You do not want sacrifices and offerings; you do not ask for animals burned whole on the altar or for sacrifices to take away sins. Instead, you have given me ears to hear you” (Psalm 40:6)

“For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings” (Hos 6:6).

So the so called Mosaic covenant and God’s covenant are different. The so called Mosaic laws and God’s laws are different!

P.S.: – If there is no law, there is no sin and there is no need of GRACE!!! But if there is God’s law, there is sin and hence we nneed God’s GRACE!!!

                        Hi Nephesh Roi,

I apologize if I mid characterized you as being a member of the Hebrew roots movement. However my critique of your false gospel still stands. You have posted that in order for a person to be saved-that is to be able to go to heaven, they must follow certain spiritual laws. This is a works-based doctrine. It is a. Spoke that is no Biblical support.

And I am not going to debate the merits of your doctrine. Why? Because like every person alive had a discussion with who presents a works-based salvation, you refused to discuss how you personally have been saved. If you were saved personally by following the spiritual laws that you keep referencing, then explain what those laws are and how well you have followed them in the past year. As I said already, whether it is a Hebrew roots movement, sacred name movement, Jehovah’s Witnesses, or any other works based cult, I received the same answer every time-the person in question will never discuss how they are personally doing a following all of these laws they’re trying to make a yoke for others.

So have you changed your stance or do you still refuse to disclose how well YOU are following the “spiritual laws” one must obey to go to Heaven?

Then shall I say that yours is a false gospel of “idleness”?!!!

“But Jesus answered them, My Father WORKS until now, and I WORK.” (John 5:17)

“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, WORK OUT your own SALVATION with fear and trembling” (Philip 2:12).

I think we had a similar discussions before also where I had given several more quotes from the Scripture to show that “idleness” is anti-Biblical. Everytime we engage on this topic, the discussion gets deflected when you ask details of my personal life!!

I don’t honestly understand your question! The apostles never roamed around proclaiming their Bio-Data but they preached the Word of God!

One thing is CERTAINLY taught in the Bible:

“For the Son of Man shall come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He shall REWARD each one according to his WORKS.” (Mat 16:27)

“And behold, I am coming quickly, and My REWARD is with Me, to give to each according as his WORK is.” (Rev 22:12)

I doubt where you will stand with your anti-work doctrine!!!

I see no mention of this scripture in this post

          Romans 8:1-39
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

          Quit arguing over doctrine!!!!!!

          1 Corinthians 1:10
I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose

          Romans 14:1-4
14 Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. 2 For one believes he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. 3 Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him. 4 Who are you to judge another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand.

Thank you for your posting of Romans 8:1-4 as the identification that righteousness and salvation aren’t found in our works. But equally important to note is that we stand and fall before GOD who is our ultimate judge as we are convicted by the HOLY SPIRIT in our living (Romans 14:1-4). We are to pay close attention to scripture in context and entirety, but we are also to be at peace, not at odds with brothers in sisters in CHRIST. If we claim that we are saved by grace and the finished work on the cross and we believe that the fruit of the SPIRIT (Galatians 5:22, 23) are evidence of this salvation, then we need not be caught in a tit-for-tat argument, by rather a collective praise to GOD for salvation being given among men. Thank you for your redirection, and again for the Romans references. Be blessed and continue to be a blessing.

            Hi Nikki,

Thanks for your comments. But with all due respect I strongly disagree with everything you said. First off regarding the laws of the Mosaic covenant:

” And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;” – Colossians 2:13-14.

Jesus took ALL of the ordinances and took them out of the way at the cross. It is only the heresy of false prophet Ellen White which states that he took “some” of the laws. Ellen G. White is an occultist, promoter of Freemasonry and proven false prophet who teaches nothing in line with Biblical Christianity. And here is one of many articles online that thoroughly expose her false prophecies:

            http://www.babylonforsaken.com/ellen.html

You also said “the mark of the beast is the enforcement of Sunday worship.” Again – where is this ever said in the Bible? You are making claims that have absolutely no Biblical support whatsoever. Here is the full passage on the Mark of the Beast:

And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. 18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.- Revelation 13:16-18.

Where do you say anything about worshiping on Sunday in this passage? How do you possibly come to this conclusion if you are rightly dividing Scripture? This incorrect theory is just another false teaching of Ellen G. White and the Seventh Day Adventist cult. Furthermore, the Bible is clear in Revelation 14 that whoever takes the mark will go to hell with no chance of repentance. Have you now damned myself and the millions of other Christians who go to church on Sunday worldwide?

This article has already explained, Biblically what the commandments of Jesus Christ The Lord are in the New Testament. It is loving God and loving your neighbor. I believe you have fallen for a very dangerous deception. If you are keeping the law for your salvation then you are denying your need for a Savior. I pray you will repent of your spiritual error and believe in the true Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Keep the Sabbaths holy as a sign in your hand and between your eyes. The first Covenant was “Finished” at the cross eliminating “all” the old laws and establishing a “new” Covenant. Exodus 13:5 And it shall be when the Lord shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt keep this service in this month.
6 Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to the Lord.
7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters.
8 And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the Lord did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt.
9 And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the Lord’s law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath the Lord brought thee out of Egypt.
10 Thou shalt therefore keep this ordinance in his season from year to year. Deuteronomy 11:18
Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes Exodus 31:14
Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Exodus 20:11
For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed Exodus 20:10
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: P.S. the Sabbath is the seventh day Saturday

                Hi Truthy,

Just quoting Scripture with no explanation at all is not an argument. You are preaching the same heresy as Nikki and with all due respect I pray that you repent.

If you are under the Mosaic covenant, then who is your High Priest? It certainly cannot be The Lord Jesus Christ. Because under the Mosaic covenant the High Priest must be a Levite- which Jesus is not.

The Mosaic Covenant is Completely fulfilled by The Death on the Cross by our Savior! He Was the Lamb and the Priest and the Redeemer. The Feasts continue. The Sacrifice does not. Keep it simple.

                    Hi Truthy,

What Scripture do you base your feast requirement on? The feasts were a part of the old covenant. They are not required for a born again Christian.

Furthermore, 3 of the feasts (Passover, Feast of Weeks and Feast of Booths) can only be celebrated in Jerusalem. Scripture is quite clear on this. Is this how you and your church/denomination celebrate them?

The move to bring the church back to the Modaic Law is quite dangerous because it easy to run into spiritual error. If a born again Christian does not celebrate the feasts then what happens? Does God punish them? Is their salvation in question?

The true Biblical Gospel rests on the finished work of Christ alone and no action of ourselves.

                      Exodus 12:17
And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever. 1 Corinthians 5:8
Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
                      Deuteronomy 16:16
Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the Lord thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and they shall not appear before the Lord empty:
                      Deuteronomy 16:10
And thou shalt keep the feast of weeks unto the Lord thy God with a tribute of a freewill offering of thine hand, which thou shalt give unto the Lord thy God, according as the Lord thy God hath blessed thee:
                      Zechariah 14:18
And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the Lord will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
You can decide to follow the doctrines of man at your own peril. By your standard we can throw out the 10 commandments too! Is that not the Mosaic Law? The law for sacrifices was fulfilled and it is not required if you accept the Messiah as your Savior. We are told to keep the feasts that are also Sabbaths. Exodus 20:8
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Or be a Heathen and follow the doctrines of man with no comprehension of the Biblical traditions and requirements. Catholicism has poisoned all so called christian religions. http://www.thepropheticyears.com/comments/Apostasy%20in%20the%20Church.HTM

                        Hi Truthy1,

Just quoting from the Bible does not make any point. Please explain your position.

B&E says he does not agree with Ellen G White who taught that “some” laws were abolished on the cross. B&E says Jesus nailed all of God’s laws on the cross so that we do not need to obey them.

                        Please provide your points. Thanks

                          Matthew 5:18
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. TILL ALL BE FULFILLED!
What does this Scripture mean to you? That you can change the law or eliminate some laws? Man is supreme to the word of our creator? WE can interpret it to mean what we feel good about? Exodus 12:17
And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever. FOR EVER! Can man change the law? is there any way Man can change Scriptures meanings or intent? Luke 24:44
And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Where is your basis for not following the law that does not contradict the Word? How do you explain this Scipture by your interpretations? Straight from the Messiah’s mouth Matthew 5:17-20

Christ Came to Fulfill the Law

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Better safe than sorry if you asked me! Why are the Feasts such a contentious issue? It should be for the highest praise of the Almighty and the Messiah. Celebrations of the miracles and Faith. Leave the doctrines of man and his churches and seek a personal relationship with your Creator and Savior In His service. Hebrew or Heathen that is your choice.

Just quoting Scripture is sufficient to show what we are supposed to follow. I do not “add” to scriptures or take away. I interpret literally “first” and if there is no conflict it stands. I try to quote what is relevant to the point. The “point “is follow the law that has not been fulfilled. In other words it is still in effect. Unless you can find a passage that nullifies this? I cannot. You say I preach “Heresy” and “Jesus” is not my priest. I will let Ahayah Asher Ahayah decide if that is true since I follow His Word and try to bring the truth to others. You preach false doctrines and twist the Word to your own meanings in conflict with other Scriptures so your word does not have any bearing on my Soul. Heresy is definitely an ingredient in this forum, I will not deny that, but it does not originate with me! I do not try to argue as you would like me to. I just try to point out the mistakes. Since the “TRUTH” is so contentious “here” I should spend my time where it would be accepted by non-bigoted minds. Good luck Readers I will no longer visit this den of Hades.

The Lord’s Day (Rev ch 1) is the seventh day Sabbath.

If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: (Isaiah 58:13 KJV)

What is gone are the yearly sabbaths referenced in Leviticus. And the feast days were gone when type met antitype at the cross.

Nikki, The Lords Day is the day of Wrath after Tribulations.(Trumpet) (in context) “Rev.1:10 10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,” The Messiah was raised on Saturday the Sabbath! First Fruits was the following Sunday! Passover was still ongoing, thus the two witnesses until Passover ended. Unleavened bread? Passover? First fruits? Tabernacles? Feast of Weeks? Trumpets? Day of Atonement? All are yearly feasts for Hebrews. You are following Mans law if you disregard these appointed times. Matthew 26:17
Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?
            Numbers 9:5
And they kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month at even in the wilderness of Sinai: according to all that the Lord commanded Moses, so did the children of Israel.
What is gone is the “blood” sacrifice and burnt offerings associated with the feasts.

Re: Are Christians under the law?

Hello, thank you for that sharing of God’s Word. As a New Born Again Christian ( baby food still) i have a question. Hope my question will be clear ( my mother tongue is french) . I hear some Christian saying ” We are part of the Old Coveneant in spirit because we have been adopted by God’s family” ??? Some told me they were Jewish under the Grace of God and they belong to Israel because they have been adopted(spirit adoption)…. To me this does not make sense ( its not logical) , but i still can not explain, or comprehend due to the fact that i am still to young in the Word of God. Could you help me please help me and direct me in the OWrd of God (Bible) so i can understand. Thank you and God Bless you .
