“Many have tried to go into the night. But that’s the price we pay when we living on the other side. Tell the devil I said hey when you get back to where you’re from.” – Bruno Mars
Bruno Mars is one of the most successful artists of this decade. He has more No. 1 Pop Songs on Billboard’s charts than any male singer of the past 20 years. The multi-platinum soulful crooner has made hit after hit with a consistent theme to his music: blasphemy against the Christian faith. Though known for his “squeaky clean” image, Bruno Mars’ music reveals a blatant disrespect for the God of the Bible and many of the core concepts of the Christian faith while celebrating sinful rebellion.
“Locked Out of Heaven”
One of Mars’ biggest hits is “Locked Out of Heaven” an ode to fornication in which Mars repeatedly weaves sexual lust with foundational Christian themes:
“Never had much faith in love or miracles
Never wanna put my heart on the line
But swimming in your water is something spiritual
I’m born again every time you spend the night”
From the onset of the song, Mars claims to have no “faith in love or miracles.” He then compares baptism (“swimming in your waters”) and the concept of Christian salvation (“I’m born again every time you spend the night”) to casual encounters of fornication.
Jesus Christ Established Baptism As A Sign of Christian Faith
“Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” – Matthew 3:13-17.
It was at the baptism of Jesus at the Jordan river that Heaven literally opened to the Earthly realm and God the Father proclaimed that Jesus Christ was the Son of God. At the end of His earthly ministry Jesus commanded all who believe in Him to follow His example and be baptized:
“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” – Matthew 28:18-20.
Baptism is a believer’s signature on the New Covenant established in Jesus Christ – that a person can receive eternal life when they put their full faith and trust in Jesus for their forgiveness of their lifetime of sins. And of course, being born again is the term for the new spirit, born of God, a believer receives at the moment of their salvation. The Lord Jesus Christ said when explaining this concept to a religious leader of His day:
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” – John 3:3-6.
Using powerhouse vocals and catchy melodies, Bruno Mars makes a perverted mockery of the basic foundations of the Christian faith.
‘Cause your sex takes me to paradise
Yeah, your sex takes me to paradise”
When Christ Jesus was on the cross, dying for the sins of humanity, He told the believing thief being executed next to Him:
“And [the thief] said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.” – Luke 23:42-43.
Minutes from death, the thief acknowledged that the man next to him was no ordinary person. He recognized that Jesus was indeed the Son of God and the Messiah. And that despite the fact that Jesus was literally nailed to a cross and being beaten and scourged, He would return from the dead and receive His kingdom – the entire Earth and Heaven under His rule. This condemned thief had saving faith. And in immediate response, The Lord confirmed that the thief would be with Him that very day in “paradise” – the destination of the souls of dead believers.
To compare these Biblical concepts to illicit sexual sins fills Webster’s definition of blasphemy to a tee.
Sympathy For The Devil?
“’Cause you make me feel like I’ve been locked out of heaven
For too long, for too long
Yeah, you make me feel like I’ve been locked out of heaven
For too long, for too long”
Beyond the disrespect for the Christian faith, the refrain of the song, then subtly sounds very similar to the fate of Satan in the final years before the Second Coming of Christ as described in the book of Revelation:
“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night..” – Revelation 12:7-10.
Satan and his army of fallen angels, who presently have access to Heaven (as confirmed in the book of Job), will be cast out of Heaven permanently during the Day of The Lord, the final period of end-times judgments (and also known as the Great Tribulation). Additionally, at the end of this epoch, Satan will literally be locked out of Heaven:
“And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.” – Revelation 20:1-3.
After the Battle of Armageddon, where Jesus Christ conquers the forces of the Antichrist and resumes control of the planet, Satan will literally be locked in hell for one thousand years, with no access to Heaven or Earth. And this is the ultimate theme of the song: that denial of fornication is similar to fate of the Devil. The Bible says of sexual sin:
“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” – Galatians 5:19-21.
Notice the passage describes a litany of sins but starts with adultery and fornication – sins regarding illicit sexual activity. The Bible’s emphasis is on the severity of these sins and that the guilt for these actions is hell. With his bubble gum pop star voice, Mars is subtly able to not only pervert the Bible’s message but weave his odes to fornication right into the iPhones and earbuds of impressionable youth and children all over the world.
“You bring me to my knees, you make me testify
You can make a sinner change his ways
Open up your gates ’cause I can’t wait to see the light
And right there is where I wanna stay”
Once again, the blasphemous allusions to the Christian faith are obvious. What spirit would inspire lyrics such as these? Clearly not a spirit that is godly.
Mockery of the Crucifixion
“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” – 1 Corinthians 1:18.
In the song Mirror, Mars teamed up with rapper L’il Wayne and filmed a video that makes a complete mockery of the crucifixion of The Lord Jesus Christ. Repeated shots show L’il Wayne in a pose that is clearly supposed to “mirror” crucifixion imagery of Jesus:
At the end of the song, a mural is shown that leaves no doubt that the intent was to draw a parallel between L’il Wayne, one of the most sin-promoting rappers in the industry, with Jesus:
Once again, why is there such an overemphasis by Mars to blaspheme the Christian faith? A potential spiritual source of his inspiration may have been revealed in the song “The Other Side.”
In the song “The Other Side” Mars make numerous allusions to dark forces in his life and warns an aspiring girlfriend about the potential dangers:
“Truth of the matter is I’m complicated
You’re as straight as they come
You go ’bout your day baby
While I hide from the sun
It’s better if you don’t understand
Cause you won’t know what it’s like
Until you try
You know I, I’ll be waiting on the other side
And you, all you gotta do is cross the line
I could wait a whole lifetime
But you just gotta decide
You know I
I’ll be waiting on the other, waiting on the other side” (source).
While the female being addressed is innocent and lives out her life in the bright of day, Mars “hides from the sun” – indicating he is up to something reserved for darkness. He then invites his paramour to make the decision to “cross the line” and come “to the other side” where Mars is awaiting her. “Break On Through (The Other Side)” by Jim Morrison of the band The Doors is one of the most famous rock songs in history. The entire song is about using occult ritual to enter the spiritual realm.
In the song, Morrison sings:
“You know the day destroys the night
Night divides the day
Tried to run
Tried to hide
Break on through to the other side” (source).
Notice the reference to the night and day, just as in Mars’ song. Later in the song, Morrison croons:
“Made the scene
Week to week
Day to day
Hour to hour
The gate is straight
Deep and wide
Break on through to the other side”
Speaking of those who will go either to Heaven or Hell in eternity, The Lord Jesus Christ said:
“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” – Matthew 7:13-14.
Note that Morrison twists the Scripture – first quoting Jesus’ words about the gate that is straight but then truly encouraging his listeners to take the “wide” way – which leads to destruction. Jesus Christ was warning the world that many will end up in damnation because of the numerous sinful temptations the fallen, cursed world offers all who live in it. This is what makes it so difficult to come to a saving faith in Jesus Christ. All people are born with a sinful nature, inherited from our first parents – Adam and Eve, that desires sin. Satan uses every means possible to entrap humanity in sin, providing all manner of temptation. Pop culture and music has been a major vehicle for Satan to spread his false message of embracing sin, lust and rebellion.
This was a major part of Morrison’s message. The self-proclaimed “Lizard King”, Morrison embraced all manner of occult arts and branded himself a shaman – able to communicate with the spirit world. Morrison claimed to be possessed by the spirits of deceased Native Americans and that it was while in Venice as a young man a spirit gave him the ability to create his music. Ray Manzarek, co-founder of The Doors, said this of the group’s name:
“There are things you know about,” says 25-year-old Manzarek, whose specialty is playing the organ with one hand and the bass piano with the other, “and things you don’t, the known and the unknown, and in between are the doors–that’s us. We’re saying that you’re not only spirit, you’re also this very sensuous being. That’s not evil, that’s a really beautiful thing. Hell appears so much more fascinating and bizarre than heaven. You have to ‘break on through to the other side’ to become the whole being.” (source).
According to Manzarek when one breaks through to “the other side” Hell is suddenly “much more fascinating” than Heaven. This satanic message was reinforced in their song “When The Music’s Over” where Morrison sang:
“Cancel my subscription to the Resurrection
Send my credentials to the House of Detention
I got some friends inside,” (source).
For the back of the album jacket of their album 13, the band posed with a bust of Satanist Aleister Crowley:
Crowley, one of the foremost satanists of the 19th and early 20th century is a revered figure in pop music inspiring acts from the Beatles to modern day rappers. His mantra “do what thou wilt” is a call to pursue whatever sinful lusts one desired. He encouraged sinful rebellion, occult ritual, drug use and human sacrifice. He said of Christianity:
“That religion they call Christianity; the devil they honor they call God. I accept these definitions, as a poet must do, if he is to be at all intelligible to his age, and it is their God and their religion that I hate and will destroy” – (Crowley, The World’s Tragedy).
The Doors viewed Crowley as an icon and someone who had broken through to the other side.
Bruno Mars Is On The Other Side
With this context, the meaning of Mars’ song takes on a whole new light.
“If they say life’s a dream
Call this insomnia
Cause this ain’t Wonderland
It damn sure ain’t Narnia
And once you cross the line
You can’t change your mind” – The Other Side, Bruno Mars.
Rather than living life in the normal world, Mars is in a different dimension – the other side. And he stresses that it’s neither a place for the faint of heart (“Wonderland”) and that it “d-mn sure ain’t Narnia” a reference to the series of fictional books written by Christian apologist C.S. Lewis. This is yet another attempt to insult the Christian faith.
Many artists who make a deal with the Devil speak of it in terms of an arrangement you cannot ever got out of – Mars sings “…once you cross the line you can’t change your mind.” This of course is a satanic deception. The Bible states: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” (Romans 3:23). By nature, all people are prone to sin and a desire to act out in rebellion against God. And as a consequence all people stand guilty and condemned before God. But in love for humanity, The Lord send Jesus Christ to take on human flesh, live without sin and give His life on the cross as a sacrifice – taking on the sins of the world so that all who believe could be forgiven. No matter how deep into sin – even if it is worship of the Devil, there is always a chance for forgiveness, repentance and full reconciliation to God.
“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” – 1 John 1:8-9.
“Yeah I’m a monster
But I’m no Frankenstein
And quite frankly
I’ve been feeling insane in between my eyes
I really can’t explain what I feel inside
If you knew what I was you’s would run and hide
Many have tried to go into the night
Cross over the line and come back alive
But that’s the price we payin’ when we living on the other side”
Again, Mars alludes to the fact that there is something dark and sinister going inside of him. It made him “a monster”, “insane” and if his paramour knew what it was she would “run and hide” (again paraphrasing lines from The Doors’ The Other Side”). The final lines indicate the danger of crossing “over the line.” What spirit inspired the words of this song? The same one that inspired the original version many decades ago. Do not be deceived.
Satanic Spirit of The Super Bowl Halftime Show
Furthering the occult connection, in 2014 Mars invited 90s rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers to perform with him at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, the most watched performance in the world. The Red Hot Chili Peppers were also admirers of admirers of Crowley. Their album Blood Sugar Sex Magik was a subtle allusion to Crowley’s book Sex Magik and teachings on the same topic.
The album jacket even spelled magic with a “k” as Crowley spelled it:
John Frusciante, the band’s lead guitarist released a solo album, Inside of Emptiness, that was inspired by Crowley’s life and teachings. The album features the song 666, the number of the Beast or Antichrist from Revelation chapter 13. Crowley often referred to himself as “the Beast” and “666.”
Preaching Sinful Rebellion
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” – 1 John 2:15-17.
“Ooh I got a body full of liquor
With a cocaine kicker
And I’m feeling like I’m thirty feet tall
So lay it down, lay it down
You got your legs up in the sky
With the devil in your eyes
Let me hear you say you want it all
Say it now, say it now” – Bruno Mars, “Gorilla.” (source).
“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft…” 1 Samuel 15:23.
Whether it’s fornication, drunkenness, or drug use, Mars repeatedly promotes a message of “Do what thou wilt” – encouraging his listeners to engage in whatever behavior pleases them. Yet many parents of kids, even elementary school age children, find his music fun and acceptable. Here’s a sample of some of the lyrics of Mars’ hit That’s What I Like:
“I got a condo in Manhattan
Baby girl, what’s hatnin’?
You and your a– invited
So gon’ and get to clappin’
Go pop it for a player
Pop, pop it for me
Turn around and drop it for a player
Drop, drop it for me
I’ll rent a beach house in Miami
Wake up with no jammies (Nope)….
Got, got it if you want it…
Lucky for you, that’s what I like, that’s what I like
S-x by the fire at night
Silk sheets and diamonds all white
Lucky for you, that’s what I like, that’s what I like” (source).
Despite such suggestive lyrics, there is no shortage of videos on YouTube of parents recording their elementary school-aged children singing and dancing to the “kid-friendly” crooners ode to fornication. Even Newsweek magazine has written on how profanity laced, explicit songs have come to dominate pop music. 1 Corinthians says: “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.” As more and more parents abandon God’s Word they have become increasingly fooled into permitting all manner of sexualized music into the iPhones and tablets of their small children.
In the video for his song Gorilla, Mars plays the role of a band leader who works in a seedy strip club. Actress Freida Pinto plays one of the exotic dancers in the club who is in a secret sinful relationship with Mars’ character. Not only does the video feature intense inappropriate intimate scenes, Pinto performs a sexually charged dance wearing lingerie. Pinto has been an outspoken advocate for women’s rights and particularly those of young girls, working with UNICEF and other organizations. And yet the “role model” for young ladies all over the world is playing a stripper in a song that glorifies misogyny and violence against women.
Note the cross in the background of the image above – continuing the theme of degrading the Christian faith. Gorilla’s lyrics are completely in line with many of Mars’ odes to fornication that very subtly encourage listeners to embrace sexual sin.
Lord willing it is now clear that there is a very dangerous spiritual message promoted in the music of Bruno Mars – one that drives people away from the Word of God and right into the bondage of sinful rebellion. If you are a Christian and support an artist who makes millions spreading his message of sex, drugs and rock’n roll to the masses both young and old, repent. And if you are not a Christian, understand that there are spiritual forces at work and that even a “squeaky clean”, “kid-friendly” artist like Bruno Mars has a strong agenda of mocking the Christian faith and steering people far from any of the Bible’s commands. With respect to those who preach a false, deceptive message of spiritual salvation, Jesus Christ said:
“I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.” – John 10:9-14.
Jesus came to Earth as a humble servant, seeking to redeem humanity. Hence He referred to Himself as “the good shepherd” – minding and caring for His flock. On the end of the spectrum you have “hirelings” those who pretend to care but are only in it for the money. The past few decades are filled with pop star after pop star who spread a message of sinful rebellion while collecting millions of dollars to spend on their own lusts and sinful passions. But having the wealth and lifestyle of a pop star is not salvation. For all his success, fame and wealth, Jim Morrison of The Doors died at 27, just one month after the deaths of fellow mega rock stars Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin (all members of the infamous celebrity “27 club”). Morrison was so tormented by demons he said he drank alcohol just to silence them. This is what Satan truly offers humanity – temporary sinful pleasure in exchange for misery and damnation.
Pray for Bruno Mars to repent of the sinful message in his music and for Christians to not just tune out his music, but speak out against the many blasphemous messages in pop music today. If Christians boldly spread the message of free forgiveness of sin and freedom from the pain, depression and depravity of this world, maybe more artists will stop blaspheming the name of God and start giving Him glory.
