DC Comics “Second Coming” Mocks Jesus Christ And The Crucifixion

DC Comics has now jumped onto the trend of committing blasphemy against The Lord Jesus Christ and mocking the Christian faith. The comic publisher is set to release “Second Coming” a six-part series in which God The Father is “disappointed” in Jesus Christ for being crucified on the cross and sends Him back to Earth in order to learn what He should have done from a superhero. The comic’s agenda is just the latest example of repeated efforts to attack the Christian faith and portray the modern church as hypocritical bigots who are ruining society – and thus the message of the Gospel – free forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God – should be ignored.

Jesus Christ “Failed” In His Mission? 

Here is a summary from the comic website:

“Witness the return of Jesus Christ, as He is sent on a most holy mission by God to learn what it takes to be the true messiah of mankind by becoming roommates with the world’s favorite savior: the all-powerful super hero Sun-Man, the Last Son of Krispex! But when Christ returns to Earth, he’s shocked to discover what has become of his gospel—and now, he aims to set the record straight.” (source).

In an interview, Mark Russell, the writer of the Second Coming comic, explained his exact thoughts on the Christian faith and Jesus’ mission to die on the cross:

“An all-powerful superhero, named Sun-Man, has to share a two-bedroom apartment with Jesus Christ. The conceit is that God was so upset with Jesus’s performance the first time he came to Earth, since he was arrested so soon and crucified shortly after, that he has kept him locked-up since then.

God then sees this superhero on Earth a few thousand years later and says, “that’s what I wanted for you!” He sends Jesus down to learn from this superhero and they end up learning from each other. They learn the limitations of each other’s approach to the world and its problems.” (source).

Webster’s 1828 dictionary, which was based on the terminology of the King James Bible, defines blasphemy as:

“An indignity offered to God by words or writing; reproachful, contemptuous or irreverent words uttered impiously against Jehovah.

Blasphemy is an injury offered to God, by denying that which is due and belonging to him, or attributing to him that which is not agreeable to his nature.” (source).

The “Second Coming” comic book fits this definition to a tee. The entire purpose of the Bible is to reveal God’s plan of redeeming humanity and saving us from certain eternal punishment through Jesus Christ. Because of our sin, humanity became spiritually dead and separated from God. Humanity could no longer live in harmony with our Creator. But from the first sinners, Adam and Eve, God prophesied that their redemption would come through a male child who would ultimately defeat Satan:

“And the Lord God said unto the serpent…I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed [the Messiah]; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” – Genesis 3:15

The mystery of Satan’s defeat and the redemption of humanity was ultimately fulfilled in the First Coming Of Jesus Christ – when He came to prove He was the Messiah and offer His own life to take the punishment for all the sins of humanity. This was very clearly predicted in the book of the prophet Isaiah:

“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.” – Isaiah 53:3-10

This is important. The central aspect in God’s plan to save humanity from our sin was that God The Son would take on the form of humanity, live a sinless life and offer Himself as a sacrifice – taking the punishment and wrath we deserve so that we could be justly forgiven for our lifetimes of sin. The prophet Isaiah wrote the above prophecy 700 years before the First Coming of Jesus. And note that rather than being a “superhero” the Messiah was going to suffer in His first arrival on Earth. Jesus would be “wounded for our transgressions” accurately predicting that the Messiah would suffer physical harm on His way to dying for our wickedness.  He was “bruised for our iniquities” – being beaten and tortured on His way and on the cross. And this brutal death “pleased God” not out of happiness over seeing Jesus suffer, but knowing that it allowed a way for humanity to be forgiven.

Essentially Jesus chose to stand in your place and take your sinful record before God the Father. He chose to take your punishment so you would have a chance to escape damnation. This is the most critical aspect of The Gospel. And this is precisely what the comic book seeks to attack, insult and dissuade readers from seeing a point to it, much less believing.

Jesus Christ Predicted His Death on The Cross

“From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.”  – Matthew 16:21

 ^“And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.” – Matthew 17:22-23

“And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.” – Matthew 20:17-19

On many occasions, Jesus Christ prophetically told His disciples that He would be killed and resurrect on the Third Day. And this was not under force or pressure. Even when He was being arrested by the Roman authorities, Jesus confirmed that He was choosing not to call upon His Divine power:

“And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus and took him. And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest’s, and smote off his ear.

Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?” – Matthew 26:50-54

Rather than fight those who detained Jesus reminded His Disciples that in a moment He could summon “twelve legions” – or thousands of angels to slaughter any human enemy in His path. But Jesus continued His mission – to die on the cross, out of love for humanity. He fulfilled the Scriptures – the many prophecies from the Old Testament – proving the Bible to be true in the process.

DC Comics Makes the Same 2,000-Year-Old Mistake

Ironically, many Jews in the days of Jesus’ First Coming were expecting the Messiah to come and conquer the Roman occupying forces and liberate the Promised land from Roman control. Precisely what the blasphemous Second Coming comic promotes:

“Yeah, exactly. God was so upset with the fact that he got crucified the last time that he wouldn’t even let him look through the celestial keyhole at Earth to keep up. He still gets to talk to people when they come to Heaven so he has a rough idea of what’s going on down there. He doesn’t know how sideways things have gone until he’s come down to Earth and sees it for himself.” (source).

Russell, the comic’s author, wrote the book God Is Disappointed In You and truly feels he has a better understanding of the Bible than professing Christians today:

“I wrote two books about the Bible, God is Disappointed in You and Apocrypha Now. I learned how much we really misunderstood the teachings of the Bible and of Christ. The Christian religion doesn’t really base itself on what he taught, particularly in the modern Evangelical megachurches.

They have him more as mascot on t-shirts to prove they’re on the winning team. [Second Coming] is about Jesus coming down and being appalled by what he sees has been done in his name by Christianity in the last two thousand years.
He goes by a megachurch and they have a billboard of this Tom Brady-looking Jesus Christ throwing a football and he doesn’t even recognize himself which is a metaphor for him not recognizing what’s been done with the religion that bears his name.” (source).

Russell’s disdain for the church and modern Christianity is blatant. And the comic is his latest way of expressing that hatred. Is this what Jesus Christ “truly wanted”?  Does anything Russell say about the crucifixion line up with the Bible? Not at all. The spirit of this comic is opposed to God. The bible calls this the “carnal mind” – lacking in any spiritual relationship with God:

“For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity [at war] against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.” – Romans 8:6-8

This is a blatant deception that wants to distort the Bible to suit the political agenda of the day. Do not be deceived.

Do Not Buy into The Fake Second Coming

Lord willing, it will be clear that the Second Coming comic has absolutely nothing to do with Biblical Christianity but instead is a mockery of Jesus Christ. When Jesus returned to Heaven after His resurrection He was not “locked in jail.” Instead He was exalted, honored and celebrated for winning back humanity to the family of God.

“Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.” – Acts 5:29-32

“And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church…” – Ephesians 1:19-22

Jesus sits at the right hand of God The Father – with all power in Heaven and Earth. And He is coming again to Earth. There will be a Second Coming – but this time Jesus is not coming to suffer, but to conquer those who still oppose Him in the end times:

“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.

 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.” – Revelation 19:11-15

Jesus is coming again but it will be for the final battle for the fate of the world. This is the time for all people, you and this author included, to choose which side we will be on. The same Devil who deceived Adam and Eve 6,000 years ago is still trying to deceive the hearts and minds of humanity away from God and into a belief in themselves, pagan religions or even just a false, distorted form of Christianity. If you are not a Christian, ask yourself why pop culture continues to make efforts to denigrate Christianity and promote anything opposed to it.  Why are shows like Lucifer (which makes Satan a hero) or American Horror Story (which glamorized witches who perform satanic rituals, murder babies all manner of atrocities) hit programs? It is because the true enemy – in the spirit realm wants you to look anywhere but the Bible for answers.

But the Bible tells the truth:

“^FFor scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.” – Romans 5:7-9

Even though we are rebellious, lustful, guilty sinners, God loves us. Even though we have turned our backs on God and the Bible, God loves us. Even for those who have blasphemed, mocked or insulted Jesus Christ, God still loves us. And we can be freely forgiven when we acknowledge our sins and trust in the sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross. If you are a Christian pray that the creators of the Second Coming comic realize this and repent. Pray for those who are unsaved to avoid these deceptive forms of entertainment that want to snatch the Word of God from the hearts of those who do not know Him and push them farther from the faith. And pray for society to look to the Savior to make peace with The Lord befhore He returns for the true Second Coming.
