“Sexy and I Know It” As a Church Worship Song?

Another church has left the Biblical Christianity to bring the world into the church.

Ignite Church in Joplin, MO took “being relevant” to new lows as they performed the pop song, “Sexy And I Know It” during worship service at their church. The video is below.

Why would a church perform a song like this as part of worship service? Because many pastors today want so badly to draw in large crowds of new visitors that they will use to pop culture and whatever is “hot” in secular music for attention. All this serves to make “church” based on the desires of the world rather than on God’s Word.

The Book of James says: Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. — James 4:4-10.

As churches strive to appeal to the world by taking on secular entertainment and appealing to sinful lusts, they are fulfilling the prophesied apostasy – the rise of the False Church that preaches a false Gospel and ignores the truths of Bible doctrine. Church worship is meant to be directed at God. It is a time to praise God, not entertain the congregation. To play such a worldly, sexually charged song is inexcusable and an offense to The Lord.

2 Corinthians 7 says: “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” Christians should strive for holy living that out of fear and respect for the Lord. Instead this church is inviting filthiness into the house of God. Here are some of the lyrics to the song:

I’m sexy and I know it

The book of Colossians Chapter 3 instructs Christians on how to live when you believe Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior:

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. – Colossians 3:5-8.

The word “concupiscence” is defined in the Webster’s 1828 dictionary as: “To covet or lust after, to desire or covet.] Lust; unlawful or irregular desire of sexual pleasure. In a more general sense, the coveting of carnal things, or an irregular appetite for worldly good; inclination for unlawful enjoyments.”

The Bible in this passage is warning not just against sinful sexual lust, but also against a lust for things that are worldly and not God-honoring. Ignite Church is just one example of many churches that are promoting a lust for the world by making secular entertainment, even when it is blatantly sinful, the centerpiece of their “worship service.”

Biblical Worship Music

The Bible is full of music. But it is focused on honoring God, not disrespecting Him.

The book of Psalms, which is a song book, is the biggest book in the Bible. Clearly, music and worship is an important part of a Christian’s relationship with God. There is no shortage of passages in the Psalms that provide instruction on the purpose of music worship:

“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.” – Psalm 100:4.

“Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright. Praise the Lord with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise. For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth.” – Psalm 33:1-4.

“O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also. The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker. For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice.” — Psalm 95:1-7.

Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord. – Psalm 150:1-6.

Worship music is for God, not ourselves. The purpose of worship music is to give thanks to God for His blessings, to praise Him for the wonderful things He has done in our lives, to give respect and praise to His name and show our appreciation. Worship music is not for entertainment of the flesh. It is to praise a Holy God. Yet in this age of apostasy, churches such as Ignite would rather entertain themselves and promote covetousness of the world than give God praise and respect the church.

And to no surprise, this worship music was a warm up for what is yet another series on sex that is running rampant through the “relevant” apostate churches in America.

Here is some of the preaching from the Pastor at Ignite:

Not only is his language and references completely inappropriate and unbiblical, he actually encourages the teen males to fornicate with women. Can there really be a serious discussion about sin, the wrath of God and faith in Jesus Christ after that kind of opening “monologue”? As the Pastor gets more inappropriate, he even warns “don’t act holy in this place. You’ll be on the outside looking in” to anyone who may have an issue with his blasphemous, raunchy preaching. These are clear signs of a false teacher who is not led by the spirit of God but by the spirit of the world. Christians are commanded to challenge these types of false pastors:

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world… They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. – 1 John 4:1-5.

Clearly this church is representing “the world” in their service. On their website, Ignite Church says about the Bible:

We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the verbally inspired word of God, the final authority for faith and life, inerrant in the original writings, infallible, and God-breathed. (source)

Are they really following this statement? Does this Pastor’s preaching reflect any respect for the Bible as the “final authority for faith and life”? In his advice on intimacy, he does not quote any scripture and acts completely irreverent towards the Bible and God. These churches and pastors are a danger to the world as they are deceiving their congregations into damnation.

More Sex Sermons

The ad used for the sex sermon series by Ignite Church in Joplin, Missouri.

In the typical fashion of seeker-sensitive, apostate churches, in 2011 Ignite Church did a sex sermon series, copying the formula of Granger Community Church detailed in our article, Sex Sermons In the Church: Marketing God Through Lust. Ignite started a website called www.msexlifesucks.org under the false premise of being a forum just to discuss sex. This pretext was used to then invite the site visitors to their church for their series which boasted that “God is pro sex.”

These perverse and deceptive gimmicks are just used to draw in new attendees and create a buzz to boost church popularity. The pastors claim the sermons are made to help the married membership. But if this was the case, why would they promote it to the public and then preach these X-rated sermons to the entire church?

Granger Church actually sells their sex sermon series online along with a press kit for pastors to explain to the media why they “need to discuss sex more” in church. And like the other churches who have jumped on this bandwagon, Ignite used a completely inappropriate banner to market their website. Here is a news clip that was done once their ads were posted in their neighborhood:

Notice the unapologetic attitude of the Pastor, even in the face of people in his own community being offended by the perverse ad by the church. And in the interview his stated concern is not that unsaved people are under the wrath of God and will go to Hell without salvation. Instead he is worried about couples who “are not having enough sex.” There is no mention of any Biblical basis for what he is doing. He is not being led by the Word of God or Spirit of God. He is merely jumping on a bandwagon, rather late, that other false churches have been riding for years. The Bible says:

But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them. – Ephesians 5:2-7.

Pray for this church and the people attending to cease from their sinful way sand repent to God for the sinful, perverse doctrines they are preaching. As the world slips further into deeper rebellion against God, it is time for churches to emphasize the Bible more than ever. Godly pastors should be treating God with even more respect and churches should be giving Him more praise that He would have mercy on our sinful society. But instead, many churches are becoming less about church and more about compromise for the flesh. And the sad truth is that there are souls at stake because these churches are not pointing people to put their faith in Jesus Christ. They are preaching a different Gospel altogether that will lead to damnation. Pray for them to turn back to God and His Word and trust God to provide for their church, not gimmicks that celebrate the same sinful behavior Jesus Christ died for.
