The Mortal Instruments is a new film that uses an age-old deception.
“I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.” – The Nephilim Giant Goliath, 1 Samuel 17:10.
A new movie entitled The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is set to hit theaters in August 2013. Based on the best-selling Mortal Instruments book series, it follows in the same line of young adult occult fiction, such as Twilight, Fallen Star and many other book series that are bombarding children and teenagers with stores of fallen angels, hybrid creatures and the occult. The film’s plot turns the Nephilim – evil half-human, half-angelic hybrid creatures of the Old Testament, into heroes who are trying to save humanity. This deception, which twists the Bible’s account of the Nephilim, serves to make them more appealing, drawing more young people into the occult and preparing them for the ultimate end-times deception of the Antichrist.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones Storyline
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to Pandemonium, a club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder – much less an murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air, It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?
Equally startled by her ability to see them, the murderers explain themselves as Shadowhunters: a secret tribe of Nephilim warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, Nephilim warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace Wayland, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours, Clary’s mother disappears, Clary is attacked and almost killed by a demon, and is soon pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance. (source).
The name “Pandemonium” literally means place of the demon. In the novel Paradise Lost, by John Milton, Pandemonium was the name of the capital of Hell and home of “..of Satan, and all his peers”. So from the onset, we see that Satanic references abound in The Mortal Instruments. The main character of the film, Clary Fray, discovers at the age of 16 that she is a Nephilim. The movie is then about Clary’s indoctrination into the “shadow world” where the Nephilim, known in the film as Shadow Hunters, wage war against demons, vampires, werewolves and other evil creatures. All the while, the “mundanes” – normal human beings, cannot view this taking place. And Clary is the key to finding three sacred objects that will aid the Nephilim in this war to save the world.
The Nephilim – Satan’s Plan To Destroy Humanity
Rather than being heroes, the Nephilim were Satan’s plan to corrupt the human race.
And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. – Genesis 6:1-4.
Rather than being heroes who are trying to help the world, the Nephilim were Satan’s plan to destroy humanity forever. Our articles on the Nephilim and the Bloodlines of The Nephilim go into great detail on why Satan initiated the incursion of hybrid creatures into humanity.
After the sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden God pronounced a judgment on Satan:
And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. – Genesis 3:14-15.
This pronouncement was historic. God proclaimed that the means by which Satan would ultimately punished and destroyed would be through the seed of the woman. (It must be remembered at this point that our enemy, Satan is a far older, and vastly more powerful and evil being, so this prophecy was a serious pronouncement). A human woman would give birth to a male child who would one day destroy the Devil. This was the first prophecy of the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. Satan was put on notice. From then on he set out to corrupt or destroy any God-fearing child as that could potentially be the prophesied Redeemer. To no surprise the first Godly child born, Abel, was killed by his wicked brother Cain. Cain was banished and Adam and Eve bore another son Seth. At his birth Eve declared: “For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.” (Genesis 4:25).
As more God-fearing sons began to populate the Earth, Satan enlisted fallen, evil angels to marry human women and have hybrid offspring with them. By corrupting “the seed of the woman”, Satan could prevent the birth of the Messiah, who of course, had to be human and not part fallen angel. Satan wants the Word of God to fail but he knew that in addition to the woman, God prophesied that Satan too would have a “seed” (v. 15). Thus the Nephilim were an attempt to thwart God’s plan of salvation for humanity. At every step, the Nephilim giants, via their evil angelic parentage, sought to undermine or undo what God had set out for humanity to be reconciled to Him. In their dominance of the Earth, they reproduced so rapidly, God proclaimed that all flesh on the Earth had become corrupted. They dominated the Earth with war, bloodshed and their pagan religion (which will be covered in Part 2 of this series).
The movie twists the Biblical account to make the fallen angels who had illicit relations with humanity the heroes.
The Nephilim giants spread so much violence and sin that: “God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Humanity was on the verge of being wiped out with no hope of being saved from sin if every person born became part-fallen angel. If there was no Messiah, there was no chance of redemption for humanity and all people would go to Hell (one of Satan’s true desires). Thus God judged the Earth with the flood to wipe out the Nephilim off of the Earth and punish the sinning angels who had illicit relations with human women.
Known as the “home of Satan”, Pandemonium is where Clary’s indoctrination begins.
What The Mortal Instruments movie attempts to do, is take the Biblical account and turn it upside down, making the Nephilim noble, just characters who are helping humanity from evil beings in the spirit realm. This twisting of God’s Word as the first tactic Satan employed to lead humanity into sin:
Now the serpent was more [subtle] than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. – Genesis 3:1-6.
Notice that Satan did not force Eve to eat from the forbidden tree. He merely put an idea into her head by changing God’s Word and contradicting it. God had sternly warned Adam and Eve that eating from the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil meant certain death. Satan instead challenged God’s Word and declared that the fruit was actually good and could make Eve a god. This subtle deception has been a tactic from the beginning of humanity and the Devil has not relented in using it to seduce humanity into sin. Scripture says: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” (Isaiah 5:20). It is sinful to try to cast something evil as a good thing for people. Yet this is precisely what Mortal Instrument does by painting the Nephilim as heroic, attractive and cool warriors. Do not be deceived.
The film’s website depicts the “heroic” angel Raziel shedding his blood to save humanity.
The Mortal Instruments similarly takes God’s Word and twists it to make the Nephilim heroes who are saving humanity. This is a synopsis on the origin of the Nephilim from the official movie website:
“Sometimes referred to as Nephilim, Shadowhunters can be traced back to the Bible. Several thousand years ago, a demon invasion threatened humans with extinction. To save the human race, a warlock summoned the angel Raziel for help. Raziel mixed some of his own angelic blood with that of a human in what became known as, the mortal cup. Those who drank the blood of the mortal cup, became Shadowhunters.” (source).
Notice the movie’s backstory is taken from the Bible, so there is no “coincidence” in the similarity of the accounts. But the movie removes the sinful disobedience of fallen angels and instead makes the angel “Raziel” a noble being who sought to save humanity by giving his blood to create the Nephilim hybrids. Also note that even though this story “can be traced back to the Bible” it was a warlock (a male witch) who rescues humanity, not God or someone who worships the God of the Bible. Thus the angel Raziel was able to create the Nephilim by having occult practicing-humans drink his blood from the Mortal Cup (something very similar to the Holy Grail of occult lore).
Interestingly, the first time The Lord put a specific prohibition against drinking or consuming blood, was right after Noah and his family stepped off of the ark:
And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat. – Genesis 9:1-4.
Having just stepped back on dry land for the first time since the destruction of the pre-flood world along with its Nephilim and angelic invaders, God’s first command was to not consume the blood of any creature. Because “the life” of a being is in its blood (something science has certainly borne out as we now know that blood carries our oxygen and DNA among other vital substances). The Mortal Instruments again changes God’s Word by making the drinking of blood a good thing and a means to save people. At the same time, it is promoting a practice done in the occult. For millennia, practitioners of high level magic have used blood drinking as a means to activate more demonic power.
Such a clear re-write of the Bible’s account is blasphemous and clearly takes evil and calls it good. More and more, movies, TV shows and novels are taking the history of the Biblical accounts and distorting them to promote exactly what God said was forbidden and evil. Do not be deceived.
Promotion of The Occult
The Shadowhunters use a church as their headquarters to train in witchcraft.
Similar to the Harry Potter book series (which The Mortal Instruments borrows liberally from – prior to writing the series the author was a Harry Potter fan fiction writer), there is a heavy promotion of the occult and black magic. The Nephilim Shadow Hunters are trained in magic and combat at “The Institute” a prep school for young Nephilim (a takeoff of the Hogwarts school of witchcraft in Harry Potter). The Institute is hidden in an old church (yet another affront to the Christian faith). As mentioned above a Nephilim can be created by drinking the blood of an angel from a mystical cup. Valentine, the villain in the film was able to “create” Clary through genetic manipulation, by tricking her then-pregnant mother into eating angel’s blood with her meals. At the institute, the Shadowhunters are trained in the occult and black magic. There is a garden and greenhouse on the top level to harvest plants and herbs best used for magic potions and spells.
The main character Clary, is introduced to the Nephilim because she has the ability to see into the spirit realm – what the film calls “The Sight.” This is a much desire power in witchcraft (in wicca it is often referred to as seeing auras). Clary’s ability initially shocks the Nephilim Shadowhunters who believe she is just a “mundane” but then learn that not only is she a Nephilim as well, but in her mind is the location of the Mortal Cup (the memory of the Cup and her supernatural past were blocked in her mind via a spell from a warlock). It is through visiting her neighbor, Madame Dorothea, a psychic, that Clary learns of the block on her memories. And thus the movie teaches that the occult is a means to learning about oneself, tapping into cool, supernatural ability and becoming a hero.

All of this is sinful and absolutely forbidden in the Bible. Deuteronomy 18 says:
When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God. – Deuteronomy 18:9-13.
Witchcraft, which is premised on contacting demonic and fallen angelic beings, is an abomination to God. They are not a means to “fight” demons (as the movie depicts) but instead is a way to access their power and ultimately be possessed by them. In the book of Acts, the Bible makes this clear:
And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour. – Acts 16:16-18.
The young woman had the psychic power of divination (being able to tell future events). But she only had the power through being possessed by a demon. This is a part of Satan’s plan. By enticing people into practicing magic, his demonic forces can corrupt a person and even control them with the hopes that person will die with no faith in God and go to hell. Not only do demons, also known as “unclean spirits” in the Bible, know who Jesus Christ is – they all fear Him:
And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him. And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee. – Mark 1:23-28.
It is out of a desire to protect humanity from demons and evil spiritual beings that God forbids any type of dabbling with magic or the occult. These spiritual beings are far older wiser and powerful than people and seek to destroy humanity. [B&E: It is also this author’s contention that demons are in fact the spirits of the dead Nephilim].
The Nephilim in the film all wear rune tattoos which give them supernatural powers.
In The Mortal Instruments the Nephilim Shadowhunters in the film also manifest supernatural powers through the use of runes – tattoos of ancient symbols that are basically spells that give the Nephilim in the film magical powers. The rune tattoos are a major part of the powers of the Nephilim Shadowhunters:
“Runes, sometimes referred to as Marks, are markings used by the Nephilim. A stele is used to draw them and they have a variety of effects. Runes were markings given to the first generation of Shadowhunters by the Angel Raziel to assist them in fighting the Demons they were tasked to eradicate. Every rune known to the Shadowhunters is recorded in The Gray Book. This is a specially crafted book with each rune place in its pages. Copies of the book are rare because each book must be specially made as many of the runes would burn normal paper.
Runes are what make Shadowhunters different from average humans as they are the only beings able to bear the Angel’s marks. Most marks can only be worn by Shadowhunters. When drawn on mundanes, they burn. However, several marks, powerful ones, would drive any average person insane. They would be turned into Forsaken, mindless servants to the one who marked them, and they would never be the same.” (source).
The Nephilim Shadowhunters cut their flesh to give themselves the power of rune tattoos.
The Mortal Instruments book series references God’s punishment of Cain in Genesis. Cain, the first son of Adam and Eve, murdered his younger brother Abel. As a punishment, God banished him to be a fugitive on the Earth. As a sign of mercy, God then placed a mark on Cain as a warning to others not to murder the evil man in retribution. According to Mortal Instruments, this mark is “The Rune of Cain.”
The Mark of Cain, sometimes referred to as the Mark of the Wanderer, is a rune mentioned in the Bible. It was a protection mark meant to protect the bearer from anyone with the intent to harm him. Anyone who attempts to hurt anyone with the Mark on them will be punished sevenfold. Despite being a protection spell, it is also somehow a curse and punishment to the bearer as it prevents his or her death, the bearer is burdened with eternal life. (source).
Once again, the story twists the Biblical account to turn God’s mark upon Cain into a tool of witchcraft and a rune that any Shadowhunter can receive.

Below are descriptions of the magical properties of runes from esoteric sources:
“From the German word raumen, meaning ‘secret’ or ‘mystery’. . . For witchcraft a rune is a magical chant. There are various rune alphabets used by occult groups”..(Mather, George A. and Larry Nichols, The Dictionary of Cults, Sects, Religions and the Occult, p. 235)
The Runes are secret, occult symbols used by Norse runemasters until the 17th century. Modern runemasters consult the runes to communicate with the subconscious self. Cathy Burns, Masonic Symbols“Runes are the oldest form of occult knowledge and magic . . . their use sets a person against God.” (Sean Sellers, Web of Darkness, p. 72).
Adolph Hitler, leader of Nazi Germany and the holocaust, was also a black magic occultist. Hitler and his Nazi leadership were heavily involved in black magic. And the symbol of the Hitler’s SS guard were runes.

And this symbol is what Mortal Instruments has made a major tool for the “good guys” in the film. It is again the subtle twisting of God’s Words and replacing what is good and meant for humanity’s benefit with what is evil.
In the Levitical Law in the Bible given by God to the Israelites after the Exodus, cutting into the flesh was forbidden: “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.” (Leviticus 19:28). The context of the chapter relates to the occult practices of the Egyptian nation the Israelites had just left in the exodus and the land of the Canaanites (the main area where the ancient Nephilim in the Bible resided), they were preparing to enter. In both nations, magic and mysticism were rampant. And cutting into the flesh or tattooing were methods of blood sand worship to the evil angels and demons masquerading as the ancient pagan gods. An example of this occurred in 1 Kings when the good Prophet Elijah, who was faithful to the God of The Bible challenges the occult priests of the pagan god Baal to a showdown to see who could call fire from Heaven.
At this point in ancient Israel’s history, the Israelite people, who God had chosen to bring His Word to the world and live as shining example of holy living, were deep into sinful rebellion, worshiping other gods and practicing all manner of witchcraft, led by the wicked King of Israel, Ahab and his wife Jezebel. Rather than serving God, Jezebel removed the Hebrew priesthood and instituted a priestly order in the worship of the Canaanite deity Baal. Just like society today, the occult had become fashionable and exciting, and people were willing to enter it, even if it meant sinning against God and risking His wrath. God sent a drought and famine upon Israel and the nation at large persisted in its sin. Soon Elijah went before King Ahab and issued the challenge for a spiritual battle against the priests of Baal:
And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel? And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim. Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel’s table. So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel. And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men. Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: – 1 Kings 18:17-23.

The challenge was for both sides to make a sacrifice of bulls on a wooden altar. And both the priests of Baal and Elijah would take turns calling on their respective gods to bring fire down from Heaven and burn the sacrifice. This contest was in front of the entire nation of Israel. Elijah, inspired by the Spirit of God, wanted to show the people once and for all, who the true God and Creator of the universe was – the God of the Bible. It was time to put the occult and black magic to test against faith in the True and Living God. The prophets of Baal went first:
And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made. And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked. And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them. And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded. – 1 Kings 18:26-29.
Try as they did, the pagan gods did not respond to the prophets of Baal. All demons and fallen angels, created beings, are subject to the authority of God. And they were silenced on this day. And notice that in order to plead with their satanic lords, the priest of Baal started to cut their own flesh, to make blood sacrificial worship. So the Bible makes it very clear that this practice was done specifically as an act of worship to demonic beings.
In The Mortal Instruments one of the elite Shadowhunters, Brother Jeremiah, as a part of a special devotion to their witchcraft, enhances his power by mutilating his body, gouging out his eyes and sewing his mouth shut.
Certain Nephilim Shadowhunters do extreme mutilation, sewing their mouths shut.
When it was the prophet Elijah’s turn to call fire, he had a trench built around the altar with water and poured water onto the wood. He left nothing to chance for any charge of “cheating.” And then he called upon the Lord:
And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again. Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God. – 1 Kings 18:36-39.
After this stunning victory, Elijah had the people slay all of the priests of Baal, a foreshadow of the fate of all of those who put their trust in the occult and reject God’s offer of salvation and forgiveness of sins.
Another example of flesh cutting was the demon possessed man, Jesus Christ encountered in chapter Mark 5. This man was so powerful, he was kept in a remote graveyard in chains. And he used stones to cut into his flesh.
The occult is ultimately a system of control used by Satan to lure people into sin and away from faith in God. It does not have the answers to true peace. It does not bring salvation. And it is inferior to the power of God and The Lord Jesus Christ. When a demon-possessed man encountered Jesus they shuddered in fear and worshiped him. Today many book series, movies and TV shows have promoted the occult to the extreme, luring unsuspecting viewers and readers into sin. Do not be deceived.
Clary Fray – The Prophesied “Savior”
Clary goes from a “mundane” life to being the savior.
Just like fictional character Harry Potter, Clary Fray, the lead character in Mortal Instruments, plays the role of the prophesied “Chosen One” – a super-powerful hero who her fellow god-like beings have been waiting on to determine the fate of the world. Although her life starts off as a “mundane”, Clary goes through an occult awakening that unleashes her hidden powers. The Bible prophesies that the Antichrist, the Satanically-empowered false Messiah who will rule the earth for 3 ½ years before the Second Coming of Christ, will be received as the world’s savior, dazzling the populace with his supernatural abilities: “Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders.” (2 Thessalonians 2:9).
Clary Fray’s tremendous power is due to her own lineage. The villain in the film, who seeks to impose a Nazi-like, extermination program of all inferiors, turns out to be her father. So like the Antichrist, Clary is the seed of the ultimate villain and source of evil in the world of The Mortal Instruments.
Valentine, the Satan-type figure in the film, turns out to be Clary’s father.
Like Clary and the other Nephilim in the film, Antichrist will be a true occult practitioner. And his powers, including coming back from the dead, will deceive the world to the point that they worship him as god:
and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. And they worshipped the dragon [Satan] which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?” – Revelation 6:3-4.
In the end times, the God-rejecting world will be so deceived, they will be lured into open satanic worship, focused on the Antichrist, the “seed of the serpent.” And the Antichrist will demand this worship under penalty of death. Just like Israel in the days of Elijah, the occult will have taken over society, save for those who remain faithful to God and believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior. In The Mortal Instruments film, Clary, the heroine and “good person” has an incestuous relationship with her brother, Jace. At the same time, there is a love triangle as another Nephilim, who is a gay male, is also romantically interested in her brother. Clary and her love interest/brother Jace, also happen to share their first kiss of their forbidden romance in the Garden at the Institute (yet another subtle allusion to the Garden of Eden and a perversion of the Bible). Yet all sexual immorality is overlooked (and the movie even attempts to evoke sympathy for the heroes who did not initially know they were related but still want an intimate relationship after learning they are siblings – though in a confusing twist in a later sequel they learn they are in fact not siblings). The spirit behind this film is clearly against the Spirit of God.
The Antichrist will institute a system of control over the world via the Mark of The Beast. This is a mark that goes into the right hand or forehead to control commerce:

Taking the mark is a permant pledge to the seed of Satan and leads to damnation for those take it. Interestingly, in the The Mortal Instruments, it is a mystical mark in her hand that identifies Clary Fary as a Nephilim and the potential “savior” of the world.
Clary just happens to have a distinguishing occult mark in her hand.

Whether it is Harry Potter, Twilight, True Blood, Vampire Diaries or the other numerous television shows and films that are promoting the occult, there is a strong effort in pop culture to indoctrinate society into the world of magic and spiritualism. And movies like The Mortal Instruments, excite fans and make them envy the abilities and attraction of their witchcraft-practitioner heroes.
Sinful Rebellion or Eternal Life – Make The Right Choice
“For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” – John 3:17.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones film will no doubt be a global box office success. And while it is easy to say “it’s just a movie” what must be remembered is that it is part of an enormous trend by pop culture to promote the occult, witchcraft and distort the message of God. This film has clearly and intentionally taken aspects of the Biblical account and subtly changed them to turn those who are pure evil into good. And in the whole film, there is not a mention of God, who created angels and humans alike. As society moves deeper into sinful rebellion, remember that there is a real spirit realm. The Nephilim, evil hybrid beings who were out to destroy humanity did exist. Angels and demons are very real. But none of them will be there on the day a person is judged before God. At that point it will be you and the true Creator and God of the Bible. And since all people have sinned, that equates to a guilty verdict and damnation. But the good news is that God, in His mercy, sent Jesus Christ, the real Savior, to give His life as the perfect sacrifice to atone for the sins of humanity.
And it only takes faith in Jesus for the forgiveness of sins – not a sacrifice, spell or tattoo, to receive eternal life. As with most movies of this genre, the Mortal Instruments makes no mention of sin or its consequences. Because if you are god, why worry? This is Satan’s deception. The Devil does not want society to think about their guilt before God. By ignoring God’s commands, going deeper into false religions and self-satisfaction a person is more likely to ignore their fate until it is too late and they are dead in their sins and sent to hell.
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” – Jesus Christ, John 6:47.
The world is indeed moving more divided between God’s righteous way and the occult. And the prophet Elijah’s question to Israel is just as relevant today: “How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him.” All the powers of the occult are no match for the love of Jesus Christ. Choose love, forgiveness and eternal life that can be found in Him. And the true Savior will protect your soul from the forces of evil forever.
Thank you for such a well documented piece of work, makes me almost want to watch the film, to check out the symbolism, but I guess this defeats the object. And I know the hold these films have on people, as they are designed to captivate, elevate the individuals ego, and romanticise evil. Yes it all started with little Harry Potter, and now that generation has grown up, their appetite for the super natural will be quenched by the satanic entertainment they’d been use to as children.
It’s very scary to watch as blind sheep, people becoming engrossed in such esoteric entertainment. It’s become an escapism from the mundane world of uncertainty, itnto a fantasy world where anything is possible, and dreams may be fulfilled.
All this is stepping stones into deeper and darker ways to get in touch with our so called inner powers, which the rulers of this world are trying to dum down. Before they know it they are meddling in things which appear to be innocent, but are the gateway and portals to allowing lying demons to make you believe you have a special purpose in this world, that’s how it usually starts. Exactly how it was with Eve, they sow the seed and before long your running with the bait. Best to not touch or look at the unclean thing in the first place. Jesus didn’t warn us against such things for no reason, we should heed his words

I spent many days in church,wore a cross everyday,praised the god I believed to be my creator and guidance through the hardest times in my life and yet when surrounded by people listening to the same messages I read from the bible I found myself surrounded by strangers who cast more judgement than they did forgiveness and who spread more gossip and lies than love and faith….you see the world as good and evil yet the proof that there is no such distinct line looks you in the miror,you are human and have faults and while you may worry about the children and their influences from the media I can tell you truthfully that the most influential people in their lives are their parents and if you are worried about how they may be affected then it is because you have no trust in the way you’ve raised them and that your faith is not what you make it out to be….there will always be things in the world you have no control over and considering this has been a problem since the beginning of time why don’t you rather focus on correcting your own faults rather than seeking out others….I hope you have the intelligence to understand what it is I’m trying to defend here….its not the sinful nephlim but the novel itself and the story that inspired a poorly informed film. Thanks for your comments. I’m sorry for the harsh experience you had in your church. But understand, that ALL people, myself definitely included, are sinners. No one is exempt. So in a church setting (especially with so many churches today not actually preaching or teaching the Bible accurately), you can have a bad social experience. But that does not have any reflection upon the Bible – which is God’s Word and expression of His love and plan of salvation for all of humanity. The Bible repeatedly shows its “heroes” falling into sin upon sin, and being punished for it. All of humanity will continue to hurt each other until we are fully reconciled to God. In your comments, you indicated that you believe Satan may be deceiving people. You’re right. He is and seeks to set up a world system where we indict God and the church, but never point any fingers of condemnation his way. Where we can trust our own judgment and feel no need for God. This is all a deception. The Lord Jesus Christ said of the Devil: “… He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” (John 8:44). Okay so this may seem delayed considering its 2017 but since I am a woman who grew up watching buffy the vampire slayer,blade,supernatural,charmed and many other supernatural films and series and I’d like to point out how you attacked the movie but never mentioned the book which explains the very nature of this specific supernatural story, people of my generation think more deeply of things and do proper research before shaming a movie based on an amazing novel written by a hard working,good natured writer trying to make a living and support their family and seeing the comments on this page shocked me and utterly revolted me in ways I couldn’t think possible, the article its self was absolute nonsense seeing as all the information wasn’t brought to light while they continued to make false accustions and you may not think the novel matters but I can promise you that majority of the movies viewers had previously read all the mortal instruments books and only watched the movie because of the quality in writing and emotional, mental and spiritual revalations. The Clave was wrong in thinking themselves better than any other life on earth and the characters of the book mention it relentlessly every chance they have. The clave was made up of people set in their ways, their upbringing and their faith that they were creatures of the divine and that is why they have failed in every confrontation to stop valentine whom just like you believed all nephlim were tainted and evil and sought to wipe them all out except those who believed in his plans and ideals and with the cup he would create new shadow hunters of pure heart and immense power but he more than any one was obsessed with feeling as though the angel betrayed the nephlim by leaving them weak where wolves were stronger,vampires faster and warlocks the ability of witchcraft yet the main characters like luke,the uncle was a werewolf and constantly wished he weren’t, simon the best friend was a vampire and only ever wanted the life of a human with normality and peaceful retirement but instead he is forced to rise as a vampire because Clarissa couldn’t bear a world without him, she was selfish yes but this is a human flaw that the novel expresses in a way so moving you relate as though we know it true to our harts that to love is to be selfish because we cannot love at a distance without destroying our selves. This post hit me hard. I am a huge Harry Potter/ Mortal Instruments/ Percy Jackson fan. The books provide what you call Satan’s attempt at distorting the youth’s vision if him and his followers. I am young, not a legal adult, and a Christian. Any true follower and believer of Christ, despite their age, knows the true biblical facts. This article is just book bashing in its purest form. It disorts facts of the story, and only uses the movie as a reference, (note: the Mortal Instruments movie is one of the worst book to movie translations in fandom history) and completely disregards the books, and things that were commonly stated, such as how wrong the Clave was. Due to internet access, today’s youth is much harder to trick, just because we read something doesnt mean we believe it. For example, how many teens do you see swearing by Jashin? (The god worshipped by the priest Hidan in the popular anime Naruto Shippuden) We don’t believe everything we see! (Contrary to popular beilef) We go around swinging Harry Potter wands because we are fans! Not because we want to go summon a demon with the deatheaters! You act like Hogwarts was summoning demons! And be honest, would you have as big a problem with the Harry Potter books is Hogwarts wasn’t the school of WITCHCRAFT and wizardry? What else are you going to call a female magic user? A sorceress? That’s refered to as evil just as often as a witch is! Seriously I’m not the only one who thinks the school of Magecraft and Wizardry sounds stupid am I?
On another note, the children who read huge book series like Harry Potter or The Mortal Instruments tend to be more intelligent than your average 21st century athletic. The ones who are influenced as easily, or are as naive as you say tend not to be the ones reading 450 page books just for the sake of it. The naive idiots are the ones who bully us for reading huge books like A Court of Thorns and Roses, or the Testing trilogy.

Thanks so much for this.I know we have differences of opinion on things, but you are well versed in the Bible. I went and saw this with my sisters (them and the girls were ‘dying’ to see it). i was very upset with the movie. but it’s amazing what people believe. we are all christians, but my sister was arguing with me all the way home how it’s a bible based book (well to a small degree yes) how the writier is a christian and trying to get people into the bible and god (she’s a self proclaimed “jew, and not religious”). not that I care. I don’t even care that there are “evil movies” out there. what does bother me a lot is the sheer amount of “godliness” that has little to nothing to do with actual godliness or is directly opposed to what the bible ( and specifically Jesus) stands for.
I am stunned to see this, I have to admit great work on exposing the Devil’s illusions in the movies. I have always thought that these types of movies have showed and romanticized evil, portraying them as ‘good’ when they are truly ‘evil’. The world has just taken hold on it, and welcomed it. It is just sad to see that. The thing is though one has to distinguish between Fact and Fiction of these movies and to raise children in knowing the difference between them. Now, I have watched TrueBlood, Vampire Diaries and such, they are to me a ‘fictional’ series, and nothing more than that…I do know however, that there is real evil in the world, and we have to be wary of it, and watchful like Jesus taught us. There is a God and a Devil, Angels, and Demons and we humans are just pieces of pawns on chessboard half the time who can be corrupted or saved depending on if we believe and repent for our sins. I have a child myself, I keep him in Church, and teach him about Jesus Christ, from kids bible books. This is a tough world of Good and Evil, but I have been seeing mostly evil within the world, and am very disgusted with it. I am very disgusted with the fact that gays are allowed to marry, and the world has become one big sinful place like Sodom and Gamora. Churches preach the wrong things at times, but there are a few churches, that truly peach GOD’s word (Those are the ones you have to seek out). I feel that upon seeing so much movies romanticizing evil, I must say is disturbing to see. I only hope and pray to God that HE will keep our Children’s eyes open, and to be wary of evil. It is also up to the parents as well to teach their kids right from wrong, to teach them about GOD and Jesus Christ, and also what is fiction within the movies, and what is fact, and what is real in life. I just saw the film and I have NEVER seen more blatant occult symbolism in a movie in my life! It’s right out there in your face! My 14 year-old said the same thing. Educate your children about this stuff because this is a common theme in all entertainment. They claimed in the film that the main symbol was an angelic symbol but it is the symbol of Baphomet!

After repenting and turning to God through faith in Jesus, and a little later my baptism, I slowly began to see the evil in the things I used to love, like certain T.V. programs and videogames. It didn’t take too long before I stopped watching TV altogether, but it took a little longer to get detached from the games.
That was around 4 years ago now.
These days, any time I do happen to catch something of a TV program or videogame or movie poster, I am just shocked by the fact that in such a short time, things have become so much darker and more grotesque. So openly occult and sinful. It is really quite worrysome and I’m glad God called me out of it, or I would probably still love to emerse myself into such things.
I did have some kind of standard or boundaries I guess, which prevented me from getting into the really horrible stuff, but at the same time the kinds of games I was playing were already very heavy on the occult, and boundaries are easily moved a little.
I can testify of the gradual conviction God layed on me regarding these things, but it is very hard to get other Christians to see why I think we shouldn’t be getting so emersed into occult inspired entertainment.
At a minimum, I know only to approach the argument from a content level, that is to say “why are we identifying ourselves with occult practices in entertainment media, when in the real world, this would put us under the wrath of God?” “Why do we love to do the things in our imagination (through playing videogames), that we would hate to do in real life? There seems to be a disconnect there. Especially for the Christian.”
I cannot say or proof that the playing of such games actually has the effect of creating witches or murderers or whatever. But even if it is supposedly harmless entertainment, why “play” out the things in your imagination, that God has forbidden in reality? It makes no sense to me.
I understand that people get upset when we voice or concerns with movies, books and games, like is done on this website. I understand that you don’t like people telling you not to do or watch the things you love. I loved a lot of things that turned out to be bad, before God called me back to Him. With more or less pain and tears I was convinced and convicted to let go of some activities and ways of life.
I had been working for years on a project that was heavily inspired by videogames, movies and whatnot. It was going to be my life goal and work to complete a story that should have become a book, movie or game. I became convinced that this story was not going to honour God, and I prayed and tried hard to think of ways to make the story a reflection of the gospel, but it just could not be done. The only way to honour God with it, turned out to be by abandoning the project altogether. It would have been unthinkable at first, for me to let all this go, but it was surprisingly easy to do in the end.
I think people need to understand that the Biblical Christian is not interested or called by Jesus to control what believers or non-believers do or watch or play [what would it benefit anyone if a non-believer was under such control but still going to hell because there was never personal repentence and restoration?]. Despite how it may come across from some people, this is not the intention of the believer, nor is it the Gospel.
You have to understand that Christians will reason from the Worldview that arrives from the revelation of God through Scripture. We believe in God, and we believe in the existence of evil forces that are opposed to God in a very real and active sense. We believe that we (Christians) too are sinners who used to oppose God, in word and deed. We were in that respect friends of the devil. When we came to understand our condition, and that we were under Gods wrath and condemnation for our rebellion against Him, we were also offered the way to salvation, that is the forgiveness of sins and the restoration to a right relationship to God, through the work of Jesus Christ, who we believe claimed to be, and is indeed Gods Son.
It is because we have come to love God who saved us, and because we now understand that the things we once did were acts of rebellion against Him, that we no longer want to do those acts, but will gradually grow into people who do the acts that correspond with Gods good nature and will.
Now, because we understand the world from this point of view, it is therefor that we will want to warn people, believers and unbelievers, to, among other things, examine the contents of videogames and movies and hold them up to what Gods good will is, as found in the Bible and as derived from its principles. It isn’t just a matter of what the immediate effects are of emersing yourself in occult themed media outings. Even if there are no side effects, I would argue that it is vain to be entertained by these things. If it does have side effects, then there is even more reason to abondon them.
But all in all, I guess we are not saying “Hey, you’re going to hell for playing these games, or because you watch these movies.” Biblically speaking, we go to hell because in our totality, we rebel against God and this shows in many aspects of our life and behavior, including our speech, thinking and of course our actual acts. Despite Gods patience and good will in providing most of us with life and food every day, we do not forfit our evil ways. And that really is a sad state. Certain videogames, movies, TV shows, may well just be a reflection of that stubborn way.
[I am withholding judgment on whether videogame makers consciously make their games as an attack on God or Christianity. At the very least I see a curious interest in mythology and the occult and wonder why so many games carry these themes and wonder why it interests people so much.]
If we have not received Gods forgiveness for our sins, hell is our destiny. God will put us there personaly (not the devil in case someone is confused about that), so our problem is with Him and can only be solved through Him. We cannot do this by doing good things to cover up for the evil ones. The only way is to accept the offer that God Himself gave as the means through which to be forgiven: the sacrifice of Jesus, who did not sin and suffered the punishment for our sins voluntarily, as per design of God the Father. Then, as a reasonable response, we will continue to do away with our old evil ways and put on the ways that are in line with Gods good character and will.
Now, I get that people may well have a different world view, and because of that you are likely to reject these things. I understand that. If you see no harm or evil in these media outings, you may well enjoy them and never see a reason not to.
However, you have to wonder. Looking through the recent history of visual media and electronic entertainment, why is there such an emphasis on things that you would readily reject in the kind of world as shown in the Bible? Why is our “entertainment” filled with sorcery, murder, sex, demons, spiritual things and gods”? Why is there a growing interest in the darkness, in the end of the world, and all things against God? Why is this line going up, not down? Why do we fill our minds with this? What is the attraction?
Are people just venting their frustration with church and religion in fantastical stories, as a reaction to this generation, or is there something deeper, something more serious underneath all this?

Any form of participation in occult activities, whether it be books, movies, harry potter they are all made for one purpose, to lead you away from the true light of righteousness. If Jesus was hear in the flesh today, do you really think he would find any of this entertaining? or do you think he would say “quit touching the unclean thing and I will take you in” what has light to do with darkness?
Before Christ returns we have to sifted, and purified and cleansed of anything associated with darkness.

While it’s all fine and dandy that you know that the subject material presented in these fictional works is fake, a lot of the source material that these writers gather inspiration on is quite real. Witchcraft is quite real, as are those who believe in drinking the blood of others, etc.
These forms of “entertainment” are there to lure the unsuspecting viewer into taking these so called “fake” ideas and make them their own. Can you say entirely that those who watch these things won’t try to perform them themselves? That’s the problem. They pull the glory away from God, and focus instead on fleshly things. Sexual promiscuity that’s promoted in many of these films does not glorify our Father, but shame Him for their content.
Many of those who are in the entertainment industry make these types of films and books to turn your heart away from God and his Son. It’s working in wonders. When was the last time you saw a mainstream movie promote loving and worshipping Jesus? Most of the time, Jesus is only mentioned when used as a profanity. This is okay?

Very humbly and without an agenda to quarrel, I would like to point out that the matter here is not what God is interested in, but what Satan is interested in. He’s interested in brainwashing the new generations, in shifting the priorities from God’s priorities to his ones. He’s interested in taking control over young lives through changing their mentalities. He wants people to think that good is bad and bad is good. By succeeding he will make sure that people will welcome anything he might impose, the antichrist eventually. If you believe this is a gross exaggeration, think of the incidents of the Blue Whale “game”. Satan knows how human mind works and he uses every mean to achieve his goals. Movies have proved to be a very powerful media.
I teach children and believe me: they are very gullible! Whilst you have the reasoning to watch these films you like and keep being yourself, they do get deeply influenced and their whole persona acts according to the new videogame, film, series they are following at the time. It’s very hard to erase certain beliefs or habits once they have been impressed on and in children.
You say that the devil is trying to manipulate people into believing that what’s wrong is right and what’s right is wrong and there may be truth to that but also consider the difference between an enlightened mind a mind that has grow to know forgiveness,love,kindness and acceptance and a mind that has been neglected,judged and shamed…. People raised the correct way know in their hearts their core where they stand with their morals and the lines they’d never cross because their compassion acts as a shield against evil influence…judging those who watch there films or read novels of this nature will not help you in your battle, you are weakening people and making them despise you and the way you behave toward them making yourselves their enemy…Satan will take advantage of these people and without your acceptance of their perception and opinions they will never listen to anything you preach, you cannot change people or their upbringing but you can show them general kindness that every person can toward another without hidden resentment or judgement otherwise you are no better than Satan himself…god is a collection of all things pure in this world they may not seem GOOD at some times but they are necessary, kindness,love,hope joy,faith,respect and acceptance. Thanks for your comments. I truly appreciate your perspective as I believe the desire to promote “acceptance” comes from a very genuine longing for peace among all people. However, I have to disagree with your premise. We all judge others. You yourself refer to people “raised the correct way” – clearly judging those who you think weren’t raised “appropriately” and thus are more evil than other you deem raised “right.” And your entire comment is judging this article as being wrong and weakening others.
But beyond that, I would submit that if something is spiritually harmful and we do not warn others, we are not being kind. In fact we are being the opposite. The entire goal of the article is to highlight the spiritual deception and dangers of books/movies like Mortal Instruments. It is sometimes hard to hear because like lots of pop culture entertainment, we grow very personally attached to it due to its high entertainment value. But that is no reason to excuse its sinful influence. The Bible says: “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.” (Ephesians 5:11). To “reprove” means to expose. And that is what this site is committed to doing so that all souls will have an opportunity to believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ and receive the salvation of their souls. We are only in this world a short time. But the fate of our souls will carry on forever. So if criticizing a deceptive movie to point someone away from eternity is “judging” then yes, we are judging. Man!!! This show is so far over the cliff. I was already uncomfortable with the funny tats on their bodies in the beginning. As the show progressed it just grew too dark for my liking. When the Warlock at the disco professed his gayness, i just fast forwarded the whole movie till the end & was happy i did. What a waste of time! Full-grown adults can discern this. Wonder what goes on in the minds of teenagers when they watch this. Weapons cache hidden in the ground under churches???!!!!

When it comes to cartoons yes some have underlying messages. Smurfs, have you ever wondered why they are blue, why Avitars in the film are blue and why the genie in aladin is blue, it’s not mere coincidence. 2) Is ANY content on TV/movies okay as long as its fictional? Are movies that blaspheme God and celebrate Satan okay if they are fictional? Hi, I love your explanation about this movie. I have watched only half of this movie and did not finished it because I find this movie boring. My question is I am christian.. and I have watched most horror movies or tv series…does this mean I would not be saved? In my view, I am not a fan of any of these movies…but I watched…a way to let me know evil does exists.

Thanks for your comment. This is a great question. To know whether you are saved is not determined by whether you watch a movie or TV show or listen to a certain song. It is determined by your faith. Jesus Christ said:
Three times in 5 verses, The Lord Jesus Christ underscores one thing: BELIEF. It is the belief that Jesus Christ, The Son of God, died on the cross to take the punishment for your sins. This is the belief that saves and makes sure you are going to Heaven. It is the understanding that absent Jesus Christ, you have no hope as you are a sinner before God and rightly condemned to hell in your guilt. But God, in His love provided a way to be forgiven: and it’s all through faith. And once you are saved, you cannot lose your salvation. Jesus said: “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” (John 6:37).
Where movies and occult tv shows/music, etc., fit in is with your spiritual walk. For an unsaved person, these forms of entertainment are extremely dangerous because they encourage disbelief in God and seduce many into the occult, witchcraft, etc. For someone who is a born again Christian, watching these types of movies can entice your flesh to be excited by the occult. Many of these films also contain blasphemous imagery and language and certainly as believers we would not want to enjoy or celebrate that. But these things have to be taken on a case by case basis. I am no way condemning all secular movies. But this is where the Holy Spirit comes to play because if you have the Spirit of God with you, certain things won’t “sit right” with you as you watch them (as I knew just seeing the trailer for this film and once I looked deeper into it was appalled by its Biblical distortions and blasphemous take on Bible history).
The fact that you would even be concerned about not being saved is a good sign that you are indeed saved. An unsaved person would never be worried about their salvation after reading this type of article. But the Holy Spirit, which a Christian receives upon being saved, will convict your heart of sin and make you worry about pleasing God above all.

I know I may seem harsh and I apologize for this but I think you two need to stop talking with this Noelle. From the words out of their mouths, they are not Christians at all save by word of mouth. If the Holy Spirit was really in them, they would not blindly support Halloween, this movie or even argue with you two the way they are. The Holy Spirit would have convicted them or at least guide them to find their answers. However, from what I read, you two are merely replying to one of a divisive spirit who is doing a fair job of stirring things up and bringing confusion.

Venice, he is on your side. He is just saying that you have done all you can. Noelle is clearly not interested in reasoning through this, taking anybody else’s opinion into account or having a mature discussion. And not to judge, but I agree with T that I have never seen a 23 year old type like that. Anyway, the typing is not nearly as important. Bottom line is, Noelle, you have to awaken and open your eyes to Satan’s presence in pop culture. Satan is a deceiver, doesn’t matter whether the movie or book is fiction or not (even though tons of stuff in this movie is real as discussed in the article). Noelle, do these movies glorify God? Are you brought closer to God by watching these shows and movies? Certainly not. Honestly ask yourself how you feel after watching these things. How much do you care about God and Jesus while immersing yourself in these exciting and stimulating fantasy worlds? They suck you into a fictional world that distracts and takes away from our ability to focus on spiritual and eternal things as we are called to. People, please pray for Noelle. If you feel exercised about it, do not sin by withholding your prayers (1 Samuel 12:23). Remember that our battle is not carnal and she evidently isn’t interested in having a civilized discussion about this.

Noelle, God loves you, but he wants all of you. He wants us to be fully and wholly committed to him. That means more time spent in prayer, reading his Word, fellowshiping with believers, and gloryfying him in everything that we do. At the very absolute minimum, I think if you are honest with yourself, you will agree that these shows and movies don’t strengthen your relationship with God. That means that they are unprofitable. However, I am very convinced that they hurt our spiritual lives. If you think about it, we are called to focus on eternal and spiritual things. Not only do these movies and TV shows take our focus off of spiritual things and place it in the world, but they go one step further and drag us into a fantasy world. Focusing on fictional things is even WORSE than focusing on worldly things as far as I am concerned. It puts an extra step between us and God. Noelle, God wants a relationship with you. That is accomplished through praying to him and reading his Word. How much is enough? Is 10 or 20 minutes a day enough? How would someone really close to you, for example, a husband or your mother, feel if you only spent 10-20 minutes with them a day? Or, sadly, like many Christians, zero minutes…would this strengthen and nurture your relationship? God is calling you AWAY from these worldly distractions. They are unprofitable and damaging to our relationship with God. God sees mainstream movies and TV shows as idols and a complete waste of time. Please, Noelle, ask yourself, do you truly believe what you say about these shows? Or are you just trying to justify your own fleshly desires by rambling on and on? Its says in Psalms he cares about the details of our lives…that can include a wide variety of things..maybe movies? But no need to be so defensive. As long as you know these things are not real, okay, approach them with discretion. BUT, if another non-Christian sees you watching certain movies and questions that or a new believer, you need to be careful. We don’t want our brother or sister in Christ stumbling. We are to be set apart from the world. God is constantly revealing to us things in our lives he wants us to change. Well, Venice, you are right to talk to a christian however you should use your judgement as well. Noelle claims to be 23 but most 23 year olds, unless they lack good sense or have a valid reason, do not write in the manner that they do. Also, for someone who claims to be a Christian, She certainly does not know a lot, even if they were one for 10 yrs. in ten years, there should have been some spiritual growth or maturity but it is evident there was non. That tells me that Noelle is not a Christian or is just a troll spouting nonsense in hopes of getting Christians to react.
It was late/ early when I saw this so I’m guilty of not paying due attention but RC only spoke to her twice, as we are told to do if we are admonishing another Christian. Yes I agree with much of what you say, I found the truth at 20 I am now 53, but within a year I was burning with the sprit not literally but I definitely knew what was evil influence and what was not.
I believe she is like many christians today, who feel as long as you show love, everything else is fine. She was probably brought up in a household who also displayed the same views. Sometimes learnt behaviour is difficult to break. Calling her a troll, is a bit below the belt, here in the UK that word is viewed as an insult or derogative. First, I’ll give a bit of history. I used to be what you would call a ” red hot” Christian. I also studied with various other Christian groups, some questionable in nature… But never converting.. More for insight and knowledge. Then upon entering college, did a paper that changed my views forever. So I guess now, I would classify myself as a hopeful agnostic…( there better be a being greater then I! ) I am still on my quest to find my way…. And am hopeful to return to more of a faith based spiritual state.
So I was researching Niphilim, inspired from some of the recent books I have read…. Mortal instruments happens to be one several series that I have read. First I read an informative Neph article on site., that intrigued me enough to look at more articles.
^ point 1: that if I was inspired, how many more would be? How many minds did it open to do research or pick up a bible again?
The movies referenced are nothing more then creative works of fiction. Like many works of fiction, based loosely on something real… Then the imagination goes from there. If such fiction influences faith, their faith wasn’t that strong to begin with.
( side note: movie was the worst piece of book to screen renditions I have ever seen)
I respect the concern of influence, however, I would much rather see good v.s. Evil spiritual movies and good prevail. Isn’t it a positive thing if it makes other people then search and maybe find the path… That turns to God? Even thought Niphilim are wrought from evil, that in this particular movie it’s different? Proving that no matter how you were created, you can chose to be good? Can chose to fight for God?
Doesn’t the death of Jesus basically say he dies for our sins? The premise of the movie, intentional or not, presses the point that we chose who we Want to be, thanks to free will. And if you were half human, half angel… The same would apply… Due to humans gift of free WILL. And can be forgiven of sin.
But I digress, these movies and books can inspire people to SEARCH for truths…. And if it brings you closer to understanding or suddenly your scouting more on such thoughts, lol like myself tonight .. Isn’t that a positive thing?
It’s just entertainment. Like magic shows, football, etc. If you think something is evil… Check reality tv.. Just saying there lol.
From my own studies, I do follow more of the angel view, do I believe them all evil or locked into being evil due to their conception? No. For instance, a child born of a serial killer automatically make the baby one? No.
Following the ideology of Genesis, God SPOKE our current existence. We are made in his image. How much power do our words hold? That is why we must be careful when speaking about such things, try to look for the light in the darkness. This particular film fantasy might portray the wrong depiction, however, it might inspire a curiosity to the bible and teachings ….

Thanks for your comments. You said that the movies like Mortal Instruments could lead people to search and find truth. This is true. But that would also necessitate writing articles on the Nephilim that share Biblical truth and expose the many lies of the Mortal Instruments, right? lol.
As for your search for the light, it’s a much more serious issue than whether or not the Nephilim were part-angel, can be redeemed, will come back, etc. It’s about YOU and whether or not you will spend eternity in the presence of God in Heaven or in the Lake of fire suffering eternal torment. You seemed concerned about whether or not a Nephilim can be forgiven. But what about your forgiveness?
I hope Mortal Instruments showed you that there is a very concerted effort in MANY novels today to distort the Biblical account and promote the villains and servants of Satan as heroic figures. This is no coincidence. It is a part of the true war, which is for the hearts and minds of humanity. And Jesus Christ, the true Light, gave His life so that we can be on the winning side of this war.
Are you reading the Bible? Are you looking for a church? What are you doing to look for the light? I hope and pray you will really spend time opening your heart and mind to God to learn real truth: as told in the Bible. Scripture says: “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” (Jeremiah 33:3). James 4 says: “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”
If you want to know God and hear from Him, humble yourself and pray. Go to the Bible with that mindset and you will receive much light.

For me, I watched part of the Harry Potter series, read the books, and I watched City of Bones and read the series. If I were to be completely honest, I did notice the gaps and flaws in such books relating to Christianity but I closed one eye. However, on reading this, I know that I should stop reading the books immediately but understandably, it’s very hard for me to do so as they are two of my favourite books/series.

Messianic Jews are the ones that accepted Christ as Messiah. There are jews that haven’t accepted Messiah, for sure. I speak of the ones that did, such as the 12 disciples, and all those that believed afterwards.
Can you show me where in scripture we are called to pray to Mary? Because as far as I can tell, Jesus Christ is the only intercessor between us and God. She was the earthly mother of Jesus, yes, but there is no basis for this worship, which it is. Jesus never mentioned “pray to my mother on your behalf.” Jesus alone is the one to worship, praise, and send our prayers to. He alone is the high priest, he alone.

If that’s the case, then everyone over 7 ft tall must be a minion of Satan? I am a Christian and believe whole heartedly in Jesus as my savior but not every work of fiction has to be satanic. Thank you for this wonderful information. I have not seen the movie since I was not even aware of such production. I willingly discarded a big percentage of recreational television as well as music. As I find myself reintroducing myself to what society now calls “normal” TV and music it doesn’t seem as bad as when you fully remove them from your life. My blood boils whenever “Christians” don’t take the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ respectfully and completely Holy. This is serious, a matter of life or eternal damnation. He lives! Thank you for your comments. I would like to first off say that it is not our intention to offend others by stating what the Bible very clearly teaches. You told me not “to judge us on what we believe” but you seem to have judged Christianity quite harshly in your comments by calling it a twisted corruption. My point is not to say don’t judge me, but to point out how hard, if not impossible it is to not judge things. We all do. And certainly God is above us all, judging everything.
The Biblical Christian perspective is simple: I do NOT want you to go Hell. And if there is a belief that I think can avoid that fate, I am going to share it. The Gospel message is tough to accept because it confronts us at the very core of our hearts. It tells us that the life we are living, the pursuits and passions we have, in many instances are sinful rebellion against God. It tells us that we are evil and do very little good. It tells us that we deserve just punishment for the wrong things we choose to do and that we are led by a spirit of wickedness. It also says that there is nothing we can do to redeem ourselves. And it says this about everybody – meaning it is talking about myself just as much as it is talking about you. This is very hard to hear and Christianity is the only religion in the world that preaches this. Every other religious belief in the world teaches self-redemption or places power in your hands. Christianity says we’re hopeless and doomed. But for God’s grace – meaning his undeserved love and favor, we can be saved and live eternally. And that is through faith in Jesus Christ.
No one can dispute the BIble when it says that “all have sinned”. Everyone knows they are guilty, thousands of times over. And Jesus Christ came to give us all FREE forgiveness of that sin. Jesus said: “..Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.” (John 8:23-24). These were not the words of a “Good teacher” or a “Wise philosopher.” These are the words of someone claiming to be God and the way to salvation. Jesus left no wiggle room to appreciate His teachings without faith. I do not want you to die in your sins. But Satan does and will do anything to make you not be concerned about them, or God’s judgment. And this film is a perfect example. They have taken parts of the Bible and completely twisted it (something you lambasted Christians for doing). It has taken the description of the shed blood of Jesus Christ – the essential element of Christianity – and instead twisted the story to make it the blood of a fallen, sinful angel, that can save humanity. And it has made the nephilim – evil beings in the Bible who wanted to destroy humanity, heroes. And yet, you are upset and offended that a Christian website has taken issue with it. See how subtle the movie’s ideas operate?
Trying to be good so bad things don’t happen to you 3-fold does not provide forgiveness for what you have done. Do not think you can “make up” for the bad things you do and balance the scale. I agree with you a 100% that trying to blatantly twist biblical facts into something they are not. So is promoting Occult, Witchcraft etc., Practicing it is definitely out of the question. But, I find it hard to believe that the authors of several of the books with deal with these subjects intentionally mean to promote these ways of life. I also do not think that these authors are satanic agents. They are just authors with an great imaginations and people who enjoy these books as they are meant to be enjoyed (for their imaginative genius) are not necessarily sinning. God judges the heart right? So he know why people read books…he knows why people watch movies…it is to be entertained not to become mindless drones who emulate what is happening in the book or movie. Secondly, for some people watching these movies or reading these books might hinder their faith and for others it might not. Let us not judge one another or condemn one another for what we believe. I have nothing against Christians, or Catholics, or anyone of any sort of religion. The way I see it, I do not own them or their lives, therefore it is not my place to decide or to tell them what they should believe or how they should live their lives. The only thing I dislike is when people use their religion to restrict other people’s lives, to harass them, or put them down. No one has the right to do that, no matter what.
Another thing. From what I can tell, most of you believe that movies and books such as Harry Potter and City of Bones and such are used to convince people into taking up witchcraft and satanism. Well, as someone who enjoys these kinds of books and knows many, many others who do as well, I have to say that you aren’t quite right there. Now, I can’t speak for the entire non-religious population out there, and I’m not going to try to, but I can safely say that the majority of us view these books and movies as simple entertainment. It doesn’t cause us to believe in anything we didn’t already believe in before. If by simply reading a book we could be so easily lured into believing something, would we not have all become Christians or Catholics ourselves long ago? I mean that as no offense. But if we believed, truly and to the point of “practicing” it, in witchcraft and evil practices, would we not also have to believe in God and angels and the heavens? For without one, the other would not exist or be labelled as such, would it?
All I’m saying is that these things are simple entertainment. They aren’t meant to do any harm, or convert any youngsters into satanism or the like. They’re exercises of the imagination, that’s all.
I understand if you want to teach the views displayed in this article to your children, or friends, or those close to you in your life, that is your right, as it’s your life. I just don’t understand why these things must be thrust at others who simply want to enjoy some good fiction.

So you do not like when Christians use their religion to “restrict other people’s lives…or put them down.” But then you proceed to tell Christians that we should absolutely not do that “no matter what.” So you have come on to a Christian site doing precisely what you said that Christians should not do to others. Isn’t this a contradiction?
You are actually missing the main point. The article is stating that the main purpose of the spirit behind this entertainment is to bring you away from God and closer to Hell. This is about your eternal destiny. Satan wants you in hell. God wants you in Heaven. Whether you ultimately practice witchcraft is a secondary issue. There are many people leading happy lives who have no interest in witchcraft whatsoever and yet they are still presently headed for eternity in the Lake of Fire. This article is looking at one means of how we can be distracted and moved in our spirit away from the message of the Bible. Our hearts are open to influence. We can all be moved and swayed by certain things. And this article seeks to warn how movies like these move us away from the Bible by intentionally twisting its message.
Have you read the Bible? If not, I then encourage you to take up your own challenge and read it and see what you believe. As for good and evil “needing each other” this is an incorrect statement. If you have a baby and love, nurture and care for her do you need to then be wicked, abusive and cold to her so your love “truly exists”? Of course not. Love does not need hate to exist. Nor does goodness require evil. A baby can understand your love without experiencing your hatred. This is why Jesus Christ said:

The human imagination is a very powerful yet dangerous thing. We produce many evil thoughts in our imaginations because our hearts are wicked. This is the dilemma of humanity. Our SIN. And God sent Jesus Christ to die on the cross to take our punishment so we can be forgiven of that sin. This movie, by its own statements has taken the Bible for its source material, and twisted and perverted it to make villains good and deny Jesus Christ while twisting His account and applying it to some fictional angel. It spent millions of dollars promoting this film’s false message on TV all over the world. And when a Christian website points this out you take issue with the Christians and say “why these things must be thrust at others..” Isn’t running a million-dollar ad campaign on TV and movie trailers “thrusting one’s ideas” at others? Again, I think there are some contradictions here.
I know that the message of the Christian Gospel is a hard one to hear – we don’t want to hear about sin. We don’t want to hear about coming judgment. But that does not change the reality of the situation. We are sinners. And we will be judged by God. I would much rather you spend eternity in Heaven. And I hope and pray you desire that one day as well.

In the middle east the holy word of the koran is used to keep females from the time they are born to the day they die in complete control of men. For christianity yes you can spread the gospel but for some christians scaring people into the holy word is damaging and wrong. The deplorable situation in Ferguson, where that police Dept. has a history of numerous complaints of racial harrasment made against them (well before the tragic Michael Brown shooting) is horrible, indeed. So are human trafficking and the other ills you mentioned. Racism is certainly alive in many forms in American society and the rest of the world. However the acts you listed are not doing being done in the name of religion. So again, they do not compare to what ISIS is doing, as their goal is to convert people to their religion through violence and murder. So saying “we have problems of our own” does not explain why you are not on Muslim websites telling Muslims to stop believing in their faith, debunking the Koran and listing all of the violent acts that are being done in the name of Islam today. Yet, you are doing those things about Christianity on a Christian website.
I am just pointing out the inconsistency because the focus always returns to Christianity and the Bible. And I believe that is because Christianity is talking about people’s SIN. Notice that when Atheist was presented with proof of the Bible’s supernatural inspiration, he suddenly departed? This is the resistance we have towards the God of the Bible because of our sin nature. Erm…. not to poke a bear, but they aren’t siblings at all, they don’t cut their flesh, the runes are artistic versions of runes in the Jewish Torah ( the holy book of the Jewish) , the stele (thing with which they draw the runes ) is modeled after the Jewish Yad, which is a pointed tool used to prevent mortal hands from touching the Jewish Torah. Also the Nazi Sig insignia has never been nor ever will be anything in the mortal instruments, the angel Raziel, who created the first shadowhunters is a Jewish angel also. The books rely heavily on Jewish matters because the authors husband is Jewish, and so is the character she wrote him as. The novels are fun, as is any work of fiction, and they don’t “invoke the devil” or whatever, because they are books. It’s not like fans go out and summon demons just for the hell of it. They are made to be entertaining, and you may not like it, but I will never understand why people like you choose to criticize it. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to read it friend. I mean no harm by my comment here, I just want to educate you on a few points you had incorrect. People love reading them, and that brings them joy, and who are you to deny them of that joy? Surely just like a human father is pleased when his children are happy, God is too. Did God personally tell you to write this article? If so can I get that number? We have a lot to catch up on. Hey, it’s just a crappy film about a fairly crappy book. My daughter loves it for entertainment but she’s safe from any “satanic symbols” because she already knows that none of these things exist. There are so many things I disagree with here but I am not going to bother going into it. I will say however, that if you are going to criticize the movie at least get simple things right. This post is a little bit much. Instead of “scaring” me into not watching any of these, this post scares me that there are people that are this obsessed about something that’s meant to be fantasy. Satan will try to get at anyone through anything, what matters is how you choose to let it affect you. Obsessing too much about how offensive you “think” these movies are can also be Satan’s affect on you. These things are fantasy. They have never once made me interested in the occult, in fact, I have found more interest in history and the origins of different things that “wanting” to “become a witch”. Since I was a child I have always had an active imagination. Fantasy has always fascinated me. I loved Neverending Story, Gulliver Travels, Chronicles of Narnia, Hercules The Legendary Journeys, Xena….. Myths and legends were always a source of inspiration for me, however, I never believed they were real, or let them affect how I lived. I have my parents to thank for that. They taught me well. I love fantasy because it’s just that; fantasy. Nothing more. The movie is not responsible for bringing people to the occult. It all comes down to one thing. The relationship between parent and child. Children are smarter than we give them credit for. They can understand if we try. My children love Harry Potter, but it’s not our households focus. I love Vampire Diaries, but I don’t spend every waking moment obsessing about it. It doesn’t affect my view of the world or of my relationship with God. Why? Because I refuse to let it. Why? Because my parents taught me well. Because instead of removing these movies because they were “influenced by the devil”, they taught us the difference between reality and fantasy. I am not here to debate or argue, simply to say be careful that your opinions don’t become obsessions. The world is not responsible for us being tempted by Satan. We are.
Excuse me, did you even read the Mortal Instrument books? I don’t think you have; otherwise, you would know that the message they are trying to send isn’t at all satanic. The shadowhunters are FIGHTING satan. Obviously they are only BASED on the real Nephilim from the bible and not actually evil. You have this series completely wrong and I suggest you actually read the books instead of basing it all on the movie and not actually knowing what you’re talking about. I completely believe in God and the bible and honestly there is much more satanic symbolism in actual churches than in what this series portrays as “good”. Maybe next time you should actually read the bible and the series before pretending that you know everything about it.

The movie is heavialy based on the Jewish religion, as the author’s husband is Jewish. So many things are historically incorrect when compared to the Christan faith, because the books AREN’T BASED on the Christian faith. The runes are based on Jewish symbols, and are not carved, but painted onto the skin. The reason the donning of runes causes pain is because of their power. Raziel is a Jewish angel. Would you please stop bashing this amazing series? You are like an over protective mother hen, you are looking too deeply into this.

There are plenty of things that are correctly or somewhat accurately analyzed about this film but the one where you claim their relationship is unbiblical , because theyre siblings? You might want to reread the bible , you may have skipped over those parts. But otherwise yes obviously the biblical nephilim were not setting out to “save” humanity even if they weren’t out to destroy it. I don’t think anyone should consider a movie or a book to be biblically accurate especially when its fiction and falls under fantasy, YA, drama, etc.
